Watch out!!! Tobeco Kayfun does NOT use SS fill screws, and corrode...

I saw this thread over on aussie vapers forum (i think) about FT kayfun Lite's screws rusting heavily with just a short exposure to water.

Last night, as an experiment, I took the fill hole screw from my Tobeco KFL and let it sit in tap overnight.

Check it out:



At the top of the cup, you can see where the screw was overnight. A nice little imprint of rust.

304 SS is not supposed to rust this rapidly. So then I took the screws and put them next to a magnet... and while the post screws didnt stick, the fill hole screw did. These are NOT stainless.

I did the magnet test on all the R91 parts- and those did not magnetize- so they look to be genuine 304 stainless steel.

Just a heads up folks- over time you dont want the innards of your Tobeco KFL to rust and actually inhale this stuff...

Im following up with the store where I bought it, the product is advertised as 304 grade SS and it looks like that is not the case.

The terminal screws probably aren't ss either. According to a post I saw these are supposed to be the sizes for them if you want to pick up some replacements.

(x2)DIN 84 m1.6 x 2mm for the deck and (x1)DIN 965 m2.5 x 4mm for the tank refill hole.

Steel/SS threads don't gall like SS/SS threads. VG and PG don't rust steel like water. Not concerned about iron oxide exposure. I prefer all SS threads in lightly torqued applications but prefer steel/SS in firmly torqued dry thread applications. To be fair I prefer all SS in a topper if threads are cut well enough to produce seal w/o firm torque.

Emus -- exactly. the fill hold is one that needs very firm torque to avoid leaking.

The terminal screws do appear to be SS, as they arent magnetized like the fill hole screw.

Regardless- the R91 isnt rusting and from what im reading, neither are the original KFLs. Not something i want to take the risk of inhaling, even if the chance is slim. Rust can form very slowly over time when submerged in juice, and Id like to avoid that.

Does anyone know the size of the terminal screws? It looks like either M1.6 x 4mm or M1.4 x 4mm. They have either 1.4mm threads or 1.6mm.

Fasttech sells an entire kit of replacement SS screws for the tobeco kfl for about a dollar and a half by the way.

Would have been nice to see them more careful about what they used to begin with, without requiring people to find out in order to address it

Tell that to the big ol pile of rusty crap found inside a random cheap Chinese dripper I left juice in.

I've had my fill screw out several times over the past month refilling. Never see any signs of oxidation. Maybe they have already corrected the issue. My 2 are KFL Lite + editions with adjustable center pin.
