I've used both variable voltage mods (Provari) and variable wattage mods (dna). From what I can tell, they work pretty much the same way. They allow me to adjust my vape "on the fly".

Most manufacturers of drop in coils print their recommended wattage range on their coils. If you're still using variable voltage you're out of luck unless there's a watts to volts conversion chart that I'm not aware of.

I've got 4 regulated mods. 2 are VW, 1 is VV, and the 4th is a 'regulated mech'. I don't know or care if it's a voltage or wattage mod, it's like a regulated mod in a permanent bypass mode. I like to keep my variable mods in 3.7 to 3.8 volt areas. I keep my Provari (VV) at that voltage reading, and my iStick and Pico (VW) in the 8 to 9 watt area. I don't know what the specific voltage is of the battery in the 'regulated mech' when I remove it, but I can 'feel' when it's gone out of the 3.8 voltage area. The same is true for my 'really a mech' mech. The coils I wrap average 1.7 ohms. I don't really care if the mod is a mech, VV, or VW. The one thing that I like with VW mods is their 'fine tuning' ability.
