Well, my mechanical mod went BOOM.

It's not just mechs. I have a Sig 30w regulated mod. I was noticing the battery rocking around inside (I thought), so I removed the base cap and adjusted a pin out. Seemed like the right adjustment. When I installed the battery it started getting hot really quickly. With some minor burn I got it apart and the battery wrapper was partly melted. Somehow it went to a dead short. The electronics couldn't help that. With the pin adjusted back in, all fine. Rattle on...

Yes, I was at home when this happened. Nobody's nephew was endangered.

Hmm... wondering who we can persuade to make us some nice battery abuse videos. I for one would love to see how our batteries actually behave when intentionally shorted. The only one I've seen is this one:

Callies Kustoms have done a few of these. Here are a couple more;

cgr18650ch.
3100mAh Panasonic. This one is quite impressively safe. Pretty sure it's a NCR18650A. I would imagine the 18650B handle the same.

chuff aluffigus did this one with a MNKE 18650. The short starts at 5:30 and it pops at 6:15, so it took about 45 seconds and the casing got to about 250 deg F.

Here's another of his videos where he vents a few batteries in mods.

I've seen a couple more over the years, none of which exploded. ICR batteries explode when they are vented or overcharged.

I actually know of no instance of a confirmed IMR or hybrid Li-ion ever burning vigorously or exploding when shorted. I believe there are batteries like these that vent every day. Maybe 1 in 100,000 (insert your preferred number :)) has the potential to explode when abused, or maybe the ones that explode are counterfeits. I don't know. But every once in a while one does explode.

Very scary stuff. You "BIG BOYS" can play Russian Roulette all you want.Glad I am satisfied with my little ego. Thank you.

I've read about more confirmed cases of eGo batteries that burned and/or exploded than everything else put together in the vape world. Treat that little battery with respect SuperTaz!

Does it count if I vent batts on PURPOSE??? I do it to test limits and see what it is "safe" to build down to but NOT advisable to anyone else lol, I also do it behind a sheet of plexiglass that I tested with some AR rounds to make sure it is safe...lol, I think I more than transcend the "hobbyist" line here though...just saying

I would like it very much if you did vent batteries on purpose while filming it and keeping it safe. Even contemplating gauging the interest for some folks chucking in $5 each to send a bunch of batteries to a volunteer who knows to do it safely.

So mod was locked; that leaves a short of the mod itself; probably a tear on the battery wrapper.

I notice that my own stingray has such a short throw.

And on my king mod, the bottom switch has no insulator! It depends on the battery having wrapper around the edge.

Train car.

Lots of people ride under ground in subways in the big cities. No place to go in the subway.
I suppose with all the mech mods being hyped out there for big profits its only a matter of time before there's an incident in a subway.

I am surprised though to hear of a vtc5 exploding? Did it explode or did it just vent?
Now that I think about it, my stingray doesn't come with good vent holes; the vents are on the sides of the bottom switch.
Looking them over, actually NONE of my mechs have obvious visible vent holes.

Hope that someone it happens to is a master fast-talker. I certainly wouldn't want to be in a position where I've discarded a smoking, hissing gas canister on a subway. :D

Then gain.... no subway over here.

pfffff.... I don't even want the money, send me batts and I will make a video to see what they test down to...

I don't even know what to say about all of this. No idea how a mod that is visibly venting from the button, vent holes, RDA, could build up enough pressure to actually explode but I guess it's possible. Personally I keep almost all of my builds at .5 or higher but with the scenario described by the OP that wouldn't matter I don't think. If a mod goes into auto-fire sooner or later there will be problems I'm sure. I like to drip but, like everyone, I have to be on the go often which is why I boarded the Reo train. Not trying to be a shill here but I wanted to bring my mech and RDA with me but didn't want to bring a mech and RDA with me if that makes sense. When I'm on the go I always have a Reo on me and sometimes a vv with some tank or another on it mainly to make sure the OP's story never happens to me.

I didn't read much of this thread, but the way you described what happened, sounds like a Bruce Willis movie. But anyways, cool story.

I carry a mech mod with me daily at work and I'm constantly moving around. I'm puffing on it a lot, too. Never had a problem. It's stuff like this that gives the vaping world a bad name. But,I digress.

Doesn't matter if it was a fake battery or not, doesn't matter if it was a .2 or 3.5ohm build...

If you put a mech mod into auto-fire and leave it eventually the battery will be overtaxed and run away, period.

Um yeah...into the china syndrome battery runaway where it makes vaping illegal and kills eveyone's babies...lol get real people

Yeah, because denial and snark is soooo much more fun.

He's right...more or less. I mean, cheap knock-off batteries exist and people buy them, unknowingly.
Also, if you get an auto-fire or worse, an internal dead short, all batteries will vent something.

I do find it ...quite amazing... that if it really was a high quality IMR, that it vented that quickly and violently that the mech mod with vent holes actually blew chunks.

My :2c: is still the same...mod makers should test with Li-Ion chem at a dead-short. It should not blow up. Maybe wishful thinking on my part, but still...

Wow busy topic ..

My very great local vape shop ( and there are many bad ones here) that got me started did make an ugly mistake.. The lady sold me a small cartomizer
for my Nemesis mod (clone) in addition to my pro tank 2. Note they sold me the nemesis too, same day same transaction.
It fired for a few days with the adapter ( perhaps it was supposed to fit an ego style stick )
( I don't know I'm a noob) but then one day pretty quick after purchase the unit started getting hot with that tank mounted.. I returned to the shop and she apologized
bought it and the adapter back , but I'm still a bit worried about the two batteries that got hot from that mess... because now I'm afraid to use them im my IPV3.. as they might be damaged.....
Mech mods can be a scary thing !!
