A couple of weeks ago I tried to buy some alcohol 95 from my local liquor store but was told I need a prescription, I was like what!. So today I was at my doctor's office for another matter so I thought I would ask. Well what I thought would be a simple request turn into a 10 minute explanation of what an e-cig is. Then he was not going to give me the prescription because he said it was not for medical use. I had to lie some what I told him it was a medical device I said it was a nicotine replacement therapy device. It was not a complete lie just a little fudging the truth. He gave me the prescription :) so off to the liquor store.

I get to the liquor and the same guy that refused me 2 weeks ago was working. I made my request and gave him the prescription, he looked at it and said he can't fill my request. I'm like what the hell I told him that he had asked for the prescription last time so that's what I got him. Then he asked me what I need it for. Another 10 minutes later he agrees and hands the prescription to a coworker. She heads to the back room for what seemed like 15 minutes before she returned. She explained that she had to verify the prescription.

So now I have 500ml of 95% alcohol that will last me for years :)

The LCBO here is a bunch of paranoid control freaks. The only booze we can by in grocery store is wine and that is sold through a separate kiosk. The LCBO owns and operates all the liquor store in Ontario. The beer stores are own and operated by the beer manufactures.

I don't know why they needed a prescription but that's what they wanted and that's what I got.

Yeah but this is posted in the DIY section. We you planning on making some liquid mix with it or what's the deal? You never finished the story. BTW: 190 proof can be bought in a liquor store here. Do you mean 195 or is the highest you can get 95 proof?

Yes I'm planning to use it in my mixes, I did not want to use vodka as it's only 40%.

What I bought is 95%/190 proof ethyl alcohol.

I posted here because I was not sure were to post it and I had read about others trying to buy it. I figured if other Canadians read this they will know ahead of time before going to the liquor store.

That's intense. I wonder why you need a script for it? Like what purpose could that serve? Using alcohol for 'medicinal purposes' is a bit of a joke down here. It's what you imagine little old ladies saying when they take a nip of Gin.

I mixed up 3 5ml bottles in banana, butter rum, and watermelon flavor cut from 36mg unflavored juice down to 18mg. I used 1 drop per 1 ml. I also find that the nicotine hit seems to be better delivered. The effects I get from nicotine seem to be happening with fewer puffs.

I don't drink so I have no plans to do shots but I did put a few drops on my tong the stuff really burns.

any change in policy? i heard about the prescription problem, but i thought that changed or something cuz i figured the lcbo site listing would mention whether we need a prescription or not...no chance i'll be getting a prescription for it hehe, guess i'll go for 60-70% overproof rum, assuming they'll let me...btw, of course do not drink it str8! its mostly meant for mixing drinks of course...best for mixing into sweetened low alcohol drinks like fruit punch, etc.

What, doesn't anyone in Canada drink at all?? Or do they need laws like that to make sure they don't?? Wisconsin here, EverClear (150 Proof 95% by volume grain alcohol) is sold in our grocer's liquor dept., $20 a quart. That was the smallest they had. Don't ask me what one would use it for, wouldn't take too many shots for me to be on the floor watching the world go 'round! It is pretty smooth, but not made to be sipped, you gotta chuck it down!....label says it can be harmful to your health, so watch it! However, no smoking in most bars here, also, so maybe do need to drink more, I wouldn't know about that. But you do have to watch out for any fluid that burns with an invisible blue flame. Whoo!

well i never tried to buy anything above my usual aged 40% whiskey hehe whenever i had overproof it was from a bud who already had it somehow...everclear is in canada at some places, but i'm guessing its sold at the lcbo & likely needs a prescription considering what technobob had to go thru...and honestly, i'm just as surprised as u about needing prescriptions for those drinks & i'm sure other canadians would be too...i'm pretty sure i seen ppl i know with grain alcohol before & i'm sure they didn't get a prescription...but that was sometime ago, so i guess maybe things changed since...

Sounds kind of like Utah.

I cannot buy Everclear in Ohio and I only found one online supplier that would ship. They were out of stock. I'm beginning to dislike those three words!
I ended up buying a brand I've never heard of, but then, I'm not a drinker so that doesn't necessarily mean anything. The label shows Alc/Vol 75.5% (151 Proof). Will this be good enough for mixing?
