I'm pretty new to mech mods. I just got my first one and I got a smok Magneto and thinking about going sub-ohm. I am using the cheap 18650's that came with my Telsa. I want to get a good safe battery for the Magneto. I have looked and read post someone put on here about batteries, my question is what make of battery is the best? Efest, AW, Panasonic?

Next question, I am wanting a good battery that will last but I'm also thinking about getting a kick. I have seemed to be vaping on this mod since I got it yesterday and I like the way it hits better than my Tesla so I may be using the Magneto the most so I want a battery that last. Like I said I, I'm thinking about getting a kick so I can't use a 18650. Can I use an 18500 with a kick? Should I get 2 18350 and stack? Someone help me out please.

Battery Basics for Mods: IMR or Protected?

Tips & Advice for New RBA Users

You want a high quality, name brand, IMR class battery. If you plan to go lower than 0.5 ohm, you need an IMR battery with a continuous discharge rate (CDR) more than 10 amps.

Ohm's Law Calculator

AW IMR
18650 2000mah 10Amp CDR
18650 1600mah 24A

Samsung hybrid (LiNiCoMnP)
INR18650-20R 2000mah 22A

MNKE IMR
IMR18650 1500mah 20A

Panasonic or Orbtronic hybrid
CGR18650CH (IMR/Li Ion hybrid) 2250mAh 10A
NCR18650PD (high drain-high capacity) 2900mAh 10A

Sony IMR
us18650v3 IMR 2250mAh 10A

EFEST IMR
18650 2000mah 10A

* AW IMR
18490 (18500) (1100mah) 8.8./16.5A ?

Pushing your battery hard using sub-ohms will shorten your batteries life expectancy and you can not expect normal time of use between charges. You will being pulling a lot of amperage from your battery - you can't expect long battery time while pulling so many amps from it. I've read where some sub-ohm users only get 2 -3 hours time on each battery.

Never stack two smaller batteries when one larger battery can do the same job. Stacking is never recommended by battery experts.

You can use an 18490 IMR battery in an 18650 mod using a Kick. The Kick will have built-in protection with amp limitations and may not fire some sub-ohm builds.

Strongly consider http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/rebuildable-atomizer-systems/416271-micro-coils-increase-vapor-flavor-th.html instead of sub-ohm. Allegedly you can get similar results without the risks involved with sub-ohm.

I don't use anything but the Sony 1600mah US18650VCT3. It pumps out 30amps the most of any battery we know of thus far for a 18650. More Ampage output the safer you are (less risk of something going wrong).

The higher the amps the lower ohms it can handle.
Are these high drain and also safe chemistry batteries? A hybrid? I've never seen the chemistry makeup of these and assumed they were Li Ion batteries. Are they protected?

I've had trouble finding specific information on this battery and therefore have not included it in my recommended list.

Thanks a bunch Baditude and EtherMagic. That is the help I was looking for. Help me out a bunch. Again, much thanks to the 2 of you!

EtherMagic, what is the price comparison of that battery compared to the AW of the same size? I may be wanting to use a kick in the future so what do you think about their 18490's.

Also, what is the difference in the 18650, 18500, 18490 and 18350 other than size? I don't want to be carrying 2-3 batteries with me at all time in case 1 goes bad. Like now, I put a newly charged battery in before I leave the house in the morning and it last me all day.

There are far fewer quality choices in the 18490 size. The only one I would recommend is the one offered by AW.

The main difference between the battery lengths is the run time you can expect and a difference in their amp limits. Obviously you get less of those the shorter the battery. Don't expect to get the same battery time using an RBA as you would from using normal resistance atomizers, it's just not physically possible. There are tradeoffs that can't be ignored.

Baditude,

Are li-ion batteries not advisable to use? I see people talking about protected, hybrid and li-ion's. What's the difference?
This is all explained in the first link in my original post. At one time, protected Li Ion batteries were what were often recommended for mechanical mods, because mechanicals don't have protection built in. (Vent holes and collapsable hot springs don't count, they don't prevent a hard short, only "might" help prevent a failing battery in your tube mod from becoming a pipe bomb.)

Battery experts are now recommending that IMR batteries which use safer chemistry to be used (in place of protected Li Ion batteries) for all applications in all mods. (resource http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ecf-library/129569-rechargeable-batteries.html).

IMR (Li Mn or safe chemistry) batteries are more tolerant to heat and stress. They may still vent during failure, but not as dramatically as a Li Ion battery in failure. Should the simple protected circuit fail in a Li Ion battery, they can vent violently in thermal runaway with flames and high pressure. NEVER use an UN-PROTECTED Li Ion battery in a mod - these are sold on EBay, Amazon, and FastTech along with IMRs and protected Li Ions. Learn your battery chemistry if you plan to order batteries from these vendors. Or buy only from trusted vendors that only sell appropriate e-cig supplies, like RTD Vapor.

Something to consider. The batteries that we use were not originally intended for the purposes we use them for in mods. They were designed for use in things like flashlights and laptops. We have "borrowed" these batteries because they are powerful enough for our basic needs. When we start pushing these batteries past the limits that they were designed for, such as sub-ohm coils, we enter into a more dangerous zone. New battery technology is progressing all the time, ie hybrid technology, but we must still respect the great power these batteries have stored inside them, and if they are abused they react very angrily.

They are non protected rechargeable Li-ion batteries and very very safe (I wouldn't only be use these if they were not). They were made and meant for High Powered devices that require high amounts of juice.

The Sony batts are very hard to find as they are usually sold out at the places that sell them. I get mine from this guy on Ebay, read the description while your at it. 2 Sony US18650VTC3 High Drain 30A Rechargeable Li on 18650 Battery 1600mAh New | eBay

They are 100% legit Sony US18650VCT3 (I own plenty from this guy and have 2 more on the way, and he ships FAST). Fact is if you are building on Mechanical devices you want a high output battery, especially if you are vaping sub-ohms. Don't get me wrong, 20-24amp is very good, but I vape at .5 ohms or lower, using 30ampage sony's give me piece of mind.

Thanks for the info and link, EtherMagic. Out of curiosity, how long will one of those last vaping at 0.5 ohms or lower?

Last me a good 8 hours or so, and this is when I am not working being lazy vaping on the couch all day. It also depends how much you vape aswell.

BTW, That guy on Ebay only has the Single Sony package left, double and triple set packs are sold out. Yes it's expensive but worth it IMO. Don't buy the Sony's from them sellers from China, you never know if they are legit or not.

Here's the single Batts he has left. 1 Sony US18650VTC3 High Drain 30A Rechargeable Li on 18650 Battery 1600mAh New | eBay

In the first comment you made with the listing on the batteries, it confused me so really didn't understand. I'm am not a great learner when it comes to reading and understanding so I usually have to be told in a dumb person way to understand it..lol. I think I got what you are saying now. I appreciate the short battery lesson. I plan on buying a 18650 and a 18490. The 18490 so I can use a kick with my mech. Again thanks for the explanation!

I also would like to get one of those volt meters that plug into the 510 connection to see how much battery power is left and what voltage drop your device has. Where could I get one of those?

I'm also looking for a carto/atty ohm meter. Everywhere I look they are sold out. Do any of y'all know where I could find one around $20? I saw on eBay they are selling them at $50 in an auction and I can't see spending $50+ on an item that sells everywhere for $20. If I have to wait it out to get one then so be it, not worth $50+ if you ask me.

Figures.

I wonder how long they will take to get them in. Then everybody and their brother will be trying to get them so I got to be on the ball and as soon as they come in place an order.

What about the volt meter that screws onto the 510 threads on your device? You can screw the tank or atty onto it to see what the voltage drop is. Where can I find one of those and what are they called?
