Cotton cooking twine that I buy at BBY. It's wicks exceptionally well and is very easy to thread into the coil using a bead threading needle. It does need to be boiled, a couple of times, as it is natural, unbleached cotton. It will however need to be replaced as often as any other cotton, but it's very easy to do.

BTW, I would NOT use nylon. If you accidentally empty tank dry burn inhale cotton, it will taste bad but probably won't hurt you. Do that with nylon and you've got all kinds of nasty things going into your lungs.

Why do you like it better than cotton balls? I'm asking because I have a lifetime supply of cotton balls and wonder if it's worth trying the roll:p

Since it hasn't been mentioned yet, (Exile beat me to it!)
I love using the Sterile Rolled Cotton from CVS. It's in the pharmacy section.
I've had far better experience with it than with cotton balls and a box will last a lifetime.

With any cotton ball I've tried (organic, boiled, non-boiled, etc), I would always get too much of that cottony taste. Sometimes it wouldn't go away at all. With the sterile rolled cotton, IF I get that taste, it's gone in a puff or two.
I also find that the rolled cotton is easier to pull off the perfect amount and easy to roll/mash into a wick than with a ball. But, that's just me. :)

ETA: If you're coming from cotton balls, and you don't mind them, then the CVS Sterile Rolled Cotton might not be a game-changer, but at something like $5 for a lifetime supply, it doesn't hurt to try.
