What happened to my battery and why?

I left this battery at the bottom of my purse and this us what happened. There was change at the bottom too, is that why?

Quick guess would be that it got shorted + to - by something metallic. FWIW, it could have been much, much worse.

Yep, this is why it's a bad idea to put "naked" batteries in any kind of a bag/pocket/purse without first putting them in a battery storage case. Otherwise, they can short on anything metal, including each other.
