All of this "did something touch it" talk, wouldn't something need to touch both sides, and then touch itself together to complete a circuit?

if the wrapper becomes even slightly damaged the walls of the battery are negative so it can be a very short path from the positive post, and whatever's contacting the battery could damage the wrap creating the issue.

Is the batt casing bent?
Batt dropped?
Perhaps the batt was simply defective.
If batt was externally shorted w/ a metal object it may have left burn or arcing marks.
Would be nice to see some pics of batt positive end and purse pocket.
