confimed by measure ment this is a transformer that has been buffed so much it ran thru the center hole ...

more info I was told that 17 of them where made with the 4 holes. I heard this from 3 reputable gg collectors.
So, is it buffed out or actually made straight from the beginning with four holes?
I never made a 4 venting holes GGT Dave. If someone buff it so much that the 4th hole exposed then its an original GGT but a buffed one. Who knows
not sure ... measured the thickness of the caps and they are almost half the width ... so i think they where buffed
theres no way that i found these it such good condition to be fakes ... especially with the engravings
Dave that center hole could also be drilled out. The bottom cap doesn't look that much buffed to the extent to expose the center hole. Don't know just taking a wild guess from looking at the pics you posted
I agree with CaptSteve. I owned a GGT with 4 holes and assumed Imeo made them. The center hole appeared machined made and seemed to be same size as the other 3 holes, although I didn't measure it.
I've come across several GGT's with 4 holes besides mine (not in person - but pics on the net). If 10 or 20 people with OCD created 4 hole GGT's by over buffing, it leaves me wondering why I've never seen a 4 hole brass bottom cap.
Also, if a person is in fact consumed with buffing bottom caps, they'd also buff the hell out of the tube and GG engravings would vanish. My GGT still had the logo and machined lathe markings, which wasn't uncommon for it back then.
Another twist is the GGT in Dave's first post and mine both had aluminum bottom caps. I know some were made, and brass later came into fashion as people liked the accent. I believe many GG Grants had aluminum bottom and top caps.
Guess it's a mystery and a great conversation piece!

From my understanding ... From several people .. There was at least 10 to 15 made with a 4th hole ... They where the earlier models .. Aluminum only ....
