For me, the device I’m using decides what gauge to use. The dripper I use 28g, the Russian I use 32g.

Reason being the dripper (Mutation X V3) screws are very sharp and bite through the lighter gauge wire, causing a short. The way the Russian works, I have an easier time wrapping the lighter gauge wire (32g) around the post/screws.

Best way to figure it out for your set up is to get both and experiment!

I've been using 28 ga nickel wire from Vapowire on Kanger subtank mini, Lemo drop, Russian 91%. 6-8 wraps on a #6 machine screw, usually come out to .13-.16 They all work fine. Some folks like to use a #8 screw for more wicking capacity but 6 works fine for me. KGD cotton....and a 12 pk of ice cold Corona with plenty of fresh lime wedges. I run the tanks on a VaporShark rDNA, 420-460 degrees, 20-25 watts, sometimes 480 degrees @30 watts if i'm feeling frisky or drunk or both, afc wide open, designated driver, I stick both feet out of the passenger side window of the car when cruising on a warm and sunny day (remember to apply sunscreen to your dogs so they won't hurt when you have to put your flip/flops back on).
