My personal belief is that there is very little correlation between the number of cigarettes you used to smoke and the nic level of juice you should start off with. We like to blame nicotine for the addiction, but it's not. Again that's just my belief.

That said, I would recommend at least 18mg. It's easier/more convenient to dilute the juice with pg/vg/flavored juice to bring the nicotine level down, rather than to mix to bump up the nicotine level.

I was a 3 pad long term smoker. I think I needed 24mg when I started, but 18mg worked OK (not first thing in the morning). After 2-3 months the 24mg was too high and I needed to start cutting it down. I ordered some 0mg of my favorite flavor so that I could easily vary the nic level.

It is important to note that when I started, cig-sized and cartomizers were common. Today's delivery systems are much better at producing vapor, so it somewhat depends on the device you are using.

Just to expand on what Grimwald said, the device used makes a big difference. I started with 24 mg in a cig-a-like and it really wasn't enough, once I switched to a VV device with a decent clearomizer I dropped down to 12 mg and it's too much at times. I have some 6 mg that I drip when I want to vape more without all of the nicotine, this is at low wattage or I would probably use 3 mg.

I quit using the cigalikes at the drugstore. By the time I started buying e liquid I was buying 12mg but am now down to 3mg. If you are using a tank then a higher mg would be recommended. But when you drip you need to cut way down on the nic. I started dripping with 9 and 12 mg and it was real easy to overdo it quick. You can OD from dripping too high mg. I've come close. Feels like you're about to pass out. Not cool.

You've already got some good answers and, as you can tell, a wide variety of recommendations.

I'll just add that the advice to get a few different strengths is good advice. If you find a flavor you like, order it in two or three different strengths. That way you can mix them together to change the strength when you find one that works for you.

I'm not saying go out and buy a load of liquid to start with, that would be a mistake until you know what strength, ratio and flavors you prefer.

Finally, I cut down my nic strength at night. I had terrible insomnia (well, worse than usual) and I found that cutting down from 18 to 12mg after dinner helped with that a little.

So, welcome to the forum and good luck on stopping smoking. You have found an excellent resource to help you along the way.

I tried to start with 12mg, but it was not enough to keep me from going back to cigarettes so I purchased 18mg and it worked. After less than 2 weeks 18mg was too strong and I went back to 12mg and have stayed there for the last 7 weeks.
Getting the right tank and battery also made the difference. For me the Aspire Naut and mini Naut with variable voltage have been the answer.. It gave me the throat hit, flavor and lack of issues I needed to give up a 27 year pack a day habit.
