So I've been vaping for over a month now. I love it. I started off with your standard analog look-a-like then went with a bigger passthrough with clearomizers (Smokeless Image | Only The Best Electronic Cigarette | Volt X2 Battery Passthrough - Accessories). Now I'm thinking of what could be the next step up for more hit. I've read a little of Lavatubes and was thinking of going with the kit (Buy Lava Tube | Get Lava Tubes | Find LavaTubes Carry Case and Accessories) to help me along with all the needed accessories. Are these harder to maintain, refill, cost more in usage, etc. than what I am using? Any other suggestions?

A lavatube is a good starter variable voltage. I would not get that one though.
The Volcano lavatubes are the first version. And they are over-priced, IMO.
You can get the later versions, which have major improvements for less money.
They don't look as cool though.
But they have fixed all the issues that gave the first Lavatubes some bad press.
I have the first Lavatube and I'm happy with it. But I wouldn't buy it now that the newer version is available.

This is the better version for less $$. It hold it's charge as the battery drains and you can use low resistance cartos. It also has a display for the resistance of your carto/atty as well as your battery level. It basically does 95% of what a Provari does, for 1/3 the price.

For your other question, no. They don't cost any more to operate. They take the same kinds of attachments as the X2, just a different thread. So you refill cartomizers, etc. the same way. There is no maintenance involved. You have to charge batteries on a separate charger and put them in, like you would do with a flashlight. Unlike the X2, you don't throw away the whole thing when the battery wears out. You just get another battery.

Since this comes with an atomizer, does it need something else for the liquid like a cartridge? I'm use to using clearomizers. Does it have something similar?

You'd have to pick up some cartos or clearomizers separately. Anything that fits a 510 will work. I recommend Fluxomizers, but you can use anything. Best to stick to around 2.5-3ohms for maximum vapor with minimum current draw.

That's the version 1.5. There's a new version (version 2) that has a higher amperage limit, although I'm not sure what practical value that has in the real world. But, just in case the OP has to have the latest and greatest, just FYI. I'm not sure if anyone has any of the version 2 in stock yet.

I found the version 2 at one place, but they only have the tube, not a kit. It's made by a different company and I've heard some troubling things about the build quality. The 4amp limit is fairly useless in the real world, at least not good enough to justify a bad build. It does have a nice top endcap re-design and it'll take protected batteries. Still, I'm hesitant to recommend it just yet. By the time you added good batteries and a charger, it's about the same price as the v1.5, which I've not heard any real complaints about.

Welcome to ECF and vaping. As a family member recently told me, I've just saved my own life. I quit smoking about the same time as you did, and also started out with Smokeless Image Volts, and felt the need to progress on to bigger (and better?) things.

The route I went with was via Altsmoke. I have found that they are very much like Smokeless Image for all the right reasons (you know what I mean). I couldn't decide between the two mods below, so I got both. You can't have too many backups, right? Ordered them a couple of days ago. My justification was I am going to be saving money that would have otherwise gone to the analogs, so put that savings into what got me off of them.

I plan to use the BB when out and about. Small enough to do a little stealth vaping, if necessary. My order has a few of these to try out (these are giant blank cartomizers that hold 5 ml just like a tank) AltSmoke.com | Personal Vaporizers | Electronic Cigarette | Ecigs | Smoktek XXXXL (4XL) 510 Dual Coil Cartomizers. Planning on getting one of these lanyards from Serenity Gear for the BB. Reasonably priced for the quality and workmanship, these are made custom-fit for all popular mods. He also makes holsters and sleeves for most mods. www.serenitygear.co

The Silver Bullet I will use mostly at home, and will try dripping for the first time and I'm investigating some tanks for my favorite juices. I got a drip shield from Avid Vapers for the atty I chose from the Altsmoke beginner kit.

If you want durability and simple, consider the BB or Silver Bullet. I have no interest in variable voltage at this time; just another thing to go wrong. IMHO.

Reo Grand and ProVari are under $200, $140 for the Grand. Vari can be a little more depends on the options but base is under $170.

Never going to knock the options suggested as they have helped lots of people stay off cigs but to say the models above are $250 is incorrect.

At the end of the day get what you are happy with both financially and functionally and you will be good.

An option not suggested yet but a little more expensive than a Lavatube is the NotCigs iPro and Buzz Pro. Last time I looked you could pick up a blemished iPro for about $15 more which to my eyes is a bargain for a rock solid device. Was very close to getting one or the other myself in fact I will do in time.

Thanks everyone for their suggestions and help. Can someone tell me if the stuff I use from Smokeless Image are 510's? It doesn't mention anything on their site.

Excuse me for my noobness: if I do go with a PV that uses an atomizer, I assume I can't just use the clearomizers that I purchase from Smokeless Image since those are a combination of atomizer and tank, correct? Or can I forgo the atomizer and attach a cartomizer/clearomizer?

Heads up. I was just reading a thread on the Lavatube forum about a problem with the 1.5 version. CCV has stopped selling them until the problem is fixed, and is replacing the ones they've already sold. So I would avoid the 1.5 until this problem is sorted.

Oh, Great!! They didn't just come out yesterday. I wonder why it took so long. The problems with ver.2 surfaced immediately.

Smokeless image stuff is kr808. You can use it with 510 batteries if you use a 808/510 adapter. They're a few bucks anywhere that sells vaping supplies. Any PV that uses an atomizer can use a clearomizer or a cartomizer or a tank or anything.
