Hi and welcome!

There is no "best route" Each person is somewhat different. Do you like a lot of vapor? A strong throat hit? Are/were you a heavy smoker? If you intend to really use your e-cig a lot, the smaller models become impractical as they have to be recharged far too frequently.

My usual recommendations are the Riva and the e-power. I have used the Riva and the batteries used in the e-power. They are good devices. Add some Boge 2.0 cartomizers and you've got a pretty good setup. You can fine tune from there with different resistance cartomizers and different strengths/flavors of e-liquids.

For e-liquid search around for sampler packs. There is a search box in the top right SEARCH ECF WITH GOOGLE. You will find tons of suggestions.

Welcome to ECF and all the best!

I will tell you what not to buy

Don't buy anything if you don't know model it really is, what threading it uses, if it's a good and compatible model, what it should cost, and where else you can buy parts and supplies for it.

I personally recommend not buying auto batteries unless your job, activities or body requires it. Most here use and recommend manuals. Manuals let you get more consistent good hits/drags and are harder to damage or kill with juice leaks. And manuals never turn on accidentally from wind or vibration.

I recommend spare everything for any ecig you are dependent on and that includes spare charger.

The most popular threadings are 510 and KR808D-1

Ego's seems to be a popular choice and have many add-ons and enhancements to make them a better personal fit. they dont look like cigarettes either. my favorite sites so far are myfreedomsmokes.com, altsmoke.com, cloudsofvapor.com all offer many choices on all needs for vaping and are very open as to what they sell

Depending on what size and style you want, as far as some of the top units on the market are the Darwin and Provari for variable voltage and variable wattage With the Darwin having the variable wattage and along with that is the constant monitoring of the Atomizer resistance which is a huge plus. I haven't owned another unit with better electronics than the Darwin. Some dont like the form factor of it not being a round tube like the Provari and other tube Mods however it is a fantastic unit I really like it and so is the Provari. These are top sellers that work great with any Atty/Carto you put on them, a cheaper version of the Provari is now the Lava tube with similar performance values but made cheaper. there is the Reo Grand which is a terrific bottom feeder Mod, and numerous other type oF "MODS" on the market, do your do diligence in research before you buy whatever you do so you make an educated decision. As far as the regular e-cigs that look like a real cigarette, there are a few good ones but you will not get the charge times and or as good of a vape with these, the Ego Type e-cig is a very popular one in various mAh ratings from 650-1100 which will give you long run times. Still your limited to 4v, your best bet is to read through the reviews and spend a little time on this forum to seek out what will be best for you. Most people start out with a reg size ecig then step up again and again, to save your self some serious cash from doing this you may want to start with one of the better ones like a Darwin, Provari or something with variable voltage/Wattage like I suggested earlier, but research research and research some more before you decide would be my best advice. Also what Atty/Carto you put on them can make a huge difference, Atty's = Ikevape i06 and his others are good, Avid vapors HH357 is another very good Atty. When it comes to Cartos = Boge 2ohm and 3ohm are good, and the dual coil Carto is another, look into all of these it makes a big difference, finding your perfect vape will be easier with a variable voltage/Wattage device and any of these Cartos / Atty's can be run on these types of units to find your sweet spot, and bottom feeders work super too, search them as well, theres nothing wrong with starting out with the one or two of the top of the line type units and even having more then one and also trying a bunch of different Atty's and cartos, most of us end up having more then one e-cig mod and different Atty's/Cartos, this will also give you a better chance at sticking with the vaping and not falling back to the cigarettes which many do because they buy the wrong cheap unit which some can be just trash and not work well at all

That is it I would like to stay away from the look of a cigarette. In would like one the comes if empty cartridges to make my own flavors.

Yes, the models mentioned above do not look like cigarettes. Empty cartidges (cartomizers) are inexpensive and you will not have any problem finding them.

As a real newbie, only in for about 1.5 weeks, I'm happy with my joyetech ego-t. I got the mega version, and couldn't imagine going less than that..... just for the battery life. It seems that I can get through the day on a fully charged battery, but wouldn't want to chance it without a backup. For sure wouldn't wan't anything less. Of course if you have the opportunity to recharge at any time, maybe battery life isn't so much an issue. For me I'm often out of range of a USB port for charging.....I want something to last a good while. That's my limited experience advice, hope it helps.

I don't recommend an eGo-T to start with. Sometimes with these, it takes some tinkering to get them to function properly. I know that some folks love them but they also have had their fair share of problems getting them to wick and/or not leak.

If you decide to go with the eGo-T, I highly suggest a few plain 510 atomizers (not the T ones) and a box of Boge 2.0ohm cartomizers. I love the eGo-T batteries for the shut-off feature but I hate the T-system. You may love it so don't just assume because some hate/love something that it'll work for you. We can only give you suggestions and some helpful advice.......

It may depend on why you decided to try ecigs in the first place....
I am an ex-smoker and when I first got into ecigs I wanted something that had the same look and feel of an regular (short) cigarett ("analogues" in ecig jargon), because it was familiar and comfortable. Initiallialy I wouldn't have been comfortable using one of the big battery devices (like I use now).

Personally, I love the analogue cigarette style devices like the Bloog or the Volt. I bought a kit with 2 batteries, a personal charging case and some cartomizers. This set up works great and didn't break the bank; which was important to me since I wasn't convinced at the time that I'd actually stick with ecigs and not go back to smoking.

I have since learned that I enjoy vaping far more than I enjoyed smoking and even though I've gone on to using other devices, for various reasons, I still use my orginal ecigs when I'm on the go and at work.

Welcome and whatever you buy, make sure its not from the mall!!...my wife has a mall brand and its horribly exspensive and we still don't know what the threads are to be able to find cheaper carts for it...I'm sure we will upgrade her to a 510 soon

Most mall brands are kr 808 threads, look on vapor king. Can you post a picture, someone can help you out

I too am pretty new to all this, and want to begin by saying the advice given above is excellent. I'd like to add a couple of points though. First, you didn't mention what you're willing or able to spend. In my case I had to keep costs down as much as possible, while getting the best "bang for the buck" I could find. You said you didn't want it to look like a cigarette, and neither did I, but I wanted long battery life between charges, and lots of options for accessories, flavors, etc. So I chose the E-Power 14650 kit. I found it for $42, plus I spent a few bucks more for juices; total bill including shipping was less than $75, and I was ready to rock & roll! What it is, is sort of an eGo clone/mod, with a few differences. First, its rechargeable batteries are separate from its switch (the kit came with 2 batts) and are pretty standard, and inexpensive; I since bought a couple of spares for $4 each. I also bought a spare switch for $10 or so, and a spare charger. Then more juices, cartomizers, some attys for dripping, etc. My point is, from what I've read I don't see where an eGo can do one thing I can't do with this E-power, and it seems to me by its modular design it will remain a lot less expensive to maintain. I absolutely love this thing! The only thing I wish it had that it doesn't have is variable voltage, and one day I hope to get a Darwin or Provari or whatever for that purpose, but that will just have to wait.

One other thing: Yes, do your homework before you buy, but remember: while you're doing your homework you're still burning little sticks of rubbish & poisoning yourself needlessly. There are all these options available, and any one of them is better than that. So read, weigh the advice, study the options, etc... but the sooner you make a choice, the longer you're likely to live to enjoy it.

Welcome aboard... and I hope you'll enjoy this forum, and your new vaping experience, as much as I am! God Bless

Wiser words were never spoken. I just spent the better part of yesterday learning this the hard way!

One Thing that can be a real help is looking up an e-cig mod data base type info list. These will list almost all the non cig looking models and often show pictures and direct you to the sites that sell them. This can get you pretty darn close to figuring out what you like, then ask on the forums here about any questions you have. You will get amazing help. Sadly almost every site says somewhere theirs are the best, so look at the features YOU want and can afford. Doormouse and Hairball here always are great help, realy and truely know what they are saying, and are always happy to help newbies. I have learned sooooo much reading their posts. You found the right place to start! Good luck.:)
