Aww, thank you everyone, for sharing your stories! This seems like a really supportive community and I've learned a lot already from browsing various threads in different areas.
I don't know how common smoking is in various fields, but I've been in the mental health field for a little over six years. I'd watched a good 75%-80% of my co-workers of various positions outside in the designated smoking areas. Of course working in the field comes with a lot of stress, like a lot of careers probably do. Honestly, drinking or smoking has never been an option for me that even really crossed my mind during stressful times. I don't know, maybe hearing a co-worker talk about her vape pen a while back just stuck in my mind as a curiosity I wanted to explore.
I've taken prescription ativan when I'm super stressed in the past, but vaping calms me and takes the anxiety burden right off my shoulders most of the time. I'm going to stay with the lowest dose of nicotine I can. I'm hovering around 3mg, but have a 10mg nearby for the rough times.

My mom has been a heavy smoker for the longest time, and started when she was fifteen. I'm thinking I'd like to get her a setup for Christmas so maybe she will be curious and use it on her own free will. It's hard to listen to her intense coughing fits... just painful to even imagine what that's like because she coughs so hard. Crossing my fingers!

Vaping is a pretty amazing innovation, I was taking meds for stress/anxiety and have been able to cut them out as well not too mention the inhalers. I have been floored by how much it has helped me. Curiosity is what led me to vaping and as cliche as it sounds really changed a lot of aspects of my life. As soon I quit smoking and started feeling better I started working out again, which lead to eating better, and that in turn lead to just taking overall better care for myself. If you do get a starter kit for your Mother I hope it works for her as well as it has for the majority of the forum members. This is a very helpful community we all share one base goal to better ourselves by giving up a horrible addiction, I know it has been a great resource for me in my journey to a happier, healthier lifestyle. And I am pretty sure it will be the same for you. Vape on!!! :vapor:

Doctor's orders, for me. Six months ago, went in to get checked out after a 6 week persistent cough turned into wheezing, expecting to be out in an hour or so with a prescription or something. Three hours later, after inhaling asthma medicine through a nebulizer because I wasn't getting enough oxygen in my blood, the doctor "suggested" that now would be a good time to quit smoking!

I've tried gums, lozenges, patches and such to quit smoking in the past, never worked for me. Luckily ran into a co-worker right around then who turned me onto vaping and I've never looked back!

And thus, a new hobby/obsession was born!:toast:

Cassondruh, I think it's great to get a setup for your mom. I'm getting my dad one for Christmas, and some juice. Already passed a spare battery and clearo onto my best friend, who smokes as much as I used to. She didn't take to it as fast as I did, but I ran into her husband today (while I was downtown buying juice lol) and he was standing on the corner vaping away on it.

My turning point was when my husband gave me a cold, and it turned into double pneumonia and bronchitis is less then three days. I literally couldn't breathe, they had to give me breathing treatments. And I'm only 26 (been smoking since 18). The nurse kept telling me off for smoking, and how my ct scan showed how bad my lungs were from it. Then, my mom was diagnosed with cancer about two weeks later. That was enough of a scare to convince me to switch to vaping for good. I invested in a rba and a mod. Haven't touched a cigarette or craved one at all for three weeks. (all of this happend fairly recently, of you can tell)

Had a rough relationship with someone that wasn't for me. At the time, I wouldn't come near cigarettes... until I realized she'd been hiding her habits from me (among others). After a lot of fights getting her to quit, I somehow managed to cave in and stupidly figured it couldn't be so bad.

6 or so months later, she left, and the habit unfortunately remained.

I started moving more towards black & milds, but even then was able to feel how bad I'd sleep, how heavy my breathing was, and how it would affect my professional life. I'd take intermittent breaks from clients, take time off commissions, the whole deal. I remember how much I struggled to catch my own breath during consultations lasting more than 2 hours, during interviews, and even during phone calls. A friend came over and I had run out of blacks, so he gave me one of his Newport 120's.

I threw up. Kinda reminded me of her.

That's not the person I want to be, you know? I realized from the get go that going to a mall kiosk or buying in to the haphazard deals on groupon wouldn't quite cut it; but under no circumstances would I have known not only how intricate and immersive the hobby is, but how warm and receptive the community would be. I suppose that's a little more than a couple turning points, but it's why I'm here!

Hoping to learn much more about the lifestyle as I progress. 11 days of not smoking, my lungs are feeling the change already!

Maybe not my wallet... but hopefully that levels out over time

April 15 I had surgery to remove my large intestine (cancer). April 20 my connection broke and had to be rushed into another surgery. After spending 15 days in the hospital (on the patch),I thought now was a good time to quit. My brother in law had a volcano that I tried before. I called my wife... had her toss out anything and everything to do with cigarettes and buy a Valcono.

When I went for my reversal in September they let me use my volcano in my hospital room[emoji41]

Money and Health! I realized I was spending $400/month on cigs and my health was noticeably getting worse and worse. I knew I had to do something but i didn't know what. Then a friend turned me onto vaping! After about a month that was all she wrote for stinkies! So much happier now I can even put it in words!

SMELL! and BORING FLAVORS!

I work with kids and they are brutally honest. One day, I smoked a camel before work. Later, I kid told me that I smelled like his father. I asked what that meant to him. He said it was bad, I asked why. He told me a story that his dad used to turn off his cigs on him and his sisters legs. TURNING POINT.

I had quit cold turkey with both pregnancies, used patches and gum for other random quit attempts unsuccessfully. Thought about vaping since an orthopedic specialist veterinarian used to come to work for procedures, and offer $100 to buy people e cig kits back when they had mall kiosks around. My estranged uncle commit suicide, we(adults) had to clean up after, found out he had lung cancer and that was reason why he did what he did...it took time, but that started setting on my mind and I was starting getting short of breath and wheeze, plus my kids....every thing added up so I decided to try it knowing that gum, patches, and cold turkey didn't work long term for me, thought this was worth at least a try...and here I am now.
