My first mech was a SS Nemesis clone, I bought it because it was the cheapest mod I found around me at any B&M and I didn't know if I would like it. If you tried a mech before, and know how to rebuild and know about the safety issues involved if done wrong, and are ready to go mech and have the cash for and already know a mech is for you, I would recommend an authentic, especially since you can get a good one now between $100-130 USD made in the USA, but not sure how that works if you're in Canada?

For a beginner, you might want to look in to a clone, since you will also need to invest in a good ohm reader, and a good battery smart charger, along with IMR batteries preferably Sony VTC4s or VTC5s for safety and trusted specs. Just make sure they are authentic Sony's.

James Dean, a REO woodvil!

then shortly after another REO, an LP Grand!

Although very beautiful, Woodvils aren't mechanicals. The regular Reos are though.

My first mech was a Phidias box mod. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...rs-forum/122134-phidias-celebration-sale.html I would wake up, go to grab it in the morning to find leaking liquid down it's sides when I left it sitting upright. Half awake and have to deal wih that a few times, it found a home in a cardboard box in my closet.

I love my Phiddies(!), however it you are talking about the regular wooden bottom-feeders, they aren't mechanical. If there are wires inside, it's not a mechanical device.

Gosh, I feel like the mod police. Sorry. I just happen happen to have Woodvils and Phiddies in addition to mechanical mods.

Like the title says, what was your first mod, did you buy a clone or a legit one to start? Would you recommend buying the legit mods over some of the 1;1 clones for beginners?

I bought an cigar stingray clone. I have never found a good reason to buy the legit ones, other than pride and for collecting purposes. Now that I know what I like, I may buy one eventually or ask for it for my birthday or something. Beginners should start out with a clone until they know what they like, mechanical button, cross threaded safety, magnetic button, adjustable posts, that kind of crap. Then they will know what to look for in the expensive ones. Hcigar clones are great, avoid the Chinese direct cheapos. Spend a few extra bucks for a genuine higher quality copy, that is still probably lower quality than the legit ones.

My first and last mech is a Reo Grand LP with an RM2 atomizer. Don't know if you can even find a clone, but I would recommend to anyone who wants to drip but is too lazy (like me) for the whole remove-cap-put-a-few-drops-vape-5-puffs-do-it-all-over-again thing. The only thing I've tried since switching to the REO almost a year ago is switching out the atomizer with a bottom-feed cyclone with AFC (I think they call it a Typhoon). I've build it 100 different ways and still prefer the RM2 with a simple micro with cotton wick. I take out the Cyclone when I'm hanging out with cloud-chasers, but prefer the draw, TH, and flavor of the RM2.

Vamo's are good but too long for comfort for me at least.

My first mech was a chi you clone from fasttech. Very well made and thick stainless. I then bought the brass version too, just as good.
I still use them sometimes.
Recently bought an MKB TS from ireland, it's a gg clone. Now i've tried it, I know I like the pinky switch
So I'll be buying an original GG when available and funds allow.
It's only fair to support the modders that design and make these great devices..
