a lot depends on your target ohms and number of coils for the build platform. Building for me is all about my target ohms. And want those builds to heat up quickly with the mod chosen. That determines what gage wire I will choose along with how big or small of coil being made.
I've been dabbling with 22 gage Kanthal for builds 0.4 ohms and under. Use it in both single, dual and tri coil rba's. if going quad coils will use 26 or 28, all depends on the build platform and length of coil for build.
Started with 28 gauge, have gone through the twisted timey whimey doctor who builds, and come up with a few of me own., but now prefer single strand round Kanthal. Often trapping twisted wire coil can prove problematic on many rba's.
Basically it all comes down to personal preference. While I'm sure all builders, once competent, just have to try the latest new build. I pretty much use what I like from everything seen and done when creating a build.
Prefer to build something and not have to muck with it for months. One dialed in and optimized, I just don't frak with it. every month or two, will pull the wick, dry burn coil, and brush it clean, do any adjustments if necessary, rinse out the wick re-juice it, slap everything back together and am good to go for another month or two.
Try a little bit of everything, tis the only way to find out, then once ones path is discovered, can buy it in 100' reels, and build. Do have a selection of round and ribbon, 25' & 50' rolls. Generally get that when stocking up on main wire, wire's cheep, comes in handy, and never know where me builds will take one.
