When a post is replied to it moves to the top of the thread, or "bumps" it up.

So a "bump" is simply a content-less reply to bump the post to the top of the sub-forum or thread.

Most people only look at the first few pages of posted threads, so a ""bump" puts that thread back on the first page of threads for a while. That's why in many forums only a certain number of bumps are alllowed within certain time frames, otherwise some people would "bump" all the time, just to keep their thread on the first page and visible.
