You too?? It's bad enough that she has been taller than me since she was 10 (she's 5'9!!), but she really thinks she is an adult. I can't even imagine what she has in store for me during her teen years!!! I think I'm in for it!!

Been there, done that. Two girls, now in their 20's... Me, thin grey hair...

Actually they are great kids, we didn't get the teen angst thing from them. We homeschooled through high school so they weren't exposed to the bad influences all day every day. And both had a better social life than we did. Oldest just graduated from college with a business degree and my youngest is in her last year with a double major in business and graphic design with one B+ and the rest A's. Yup, proud dad here...

That is awesome!!
I have also been homeschooling my daughter for the last couple of years, however she just decided that she would like to go back to regular school this upcoming school year. She is awesome- I couldn't ask for a better daughter. She is also a straight A student and she is in the gifted and talented program through our district.
I am also a proud momma- can you tell??:)
But even with all that- she really does think she's an adult. She can drive me freaking crazy sometimes. I swear, she likes to argue just for arguments sake. It doesn't matter what I say- she always has to debate it.
However- I wouldn't trade her for the world- even if she is too smart for her own good sometimes.

As a teacher myself (high school history), I always had an appreciation for people who were engaged enough do homeschooling "right." There are so many resources available now for homeschooling (online, etc)... and other social outlets (YMCA sports, etc)... it's certainly possible (even probable) that one can get a better "education" in the home - especially in lieu of the way some public school districts are struggling. We're fortunate here in Millard/Omaha, NE - the public schools are better than just good... they are some of the best in the nation.

I'm always amazed at how engaged the home schooling folks are here. They even have organized daily "phys ed" for all of the folks who want it. I wish our school district was as good as yours. Frankly Jeffco schools suck.

I wish I could say the same for the Omaha Public Schools - Millard is kind-of a "pocket" that's very heavily invested in the education system (we pay for it in taxes). It's blocked from open enrollment, you have to live in Millard to attend... they have (3) different curriculum tracks starting at Kindergarten. Montessori, Traditional, and Harkness. Very, very nice.

On another note, IMHO, most teachers are grossly under compensated for the service they provide to our children as it takes dedication and a special person to choose teaching as a profession. I firmly believe that the lower paid teachers salaries should be at least doubled!

I tend to agree, with one caveat, their retirement looks like or is Social Security kind of money. Since as a whole the Union won't agree we have the perpetual stalemate. It's completely silly on their part that they won't. They are teachers and apparently don't recall the TVM(time value of money) lessons they all had to sit through.

I actually was a teacher for a short time also. I earned my teaching credentials in California before I had children. I did my student teaching as a third grade teacher. Teaching runs in my family. My mother was high school teacher, I have several aunts who are teachers and professors. I also have grandparents, great grandparents etc who were also teachers. I think it takes a special kind of person to not only understand something, but also have the skill and patience to help someone else understand also.
I just became so disillusioned with the school system and school politics at the time. It seemed that the focus had gone from the students to just teaching the material on the standardized testing.
I do still love working with children. I have a real passion for it. Now I just focus that on my own children:)
I believe the world needs more good teachers!!!
And yes Distortoblotto- teaching is probably the most underpaid profession out there!!!

I went to Millard North for a year before moving back to STL. That was such a good school. I was a full year ahead of everyone when I transferred here.
