A cartomizer is a metal tube filled with batting that has a coil inside it. You fill them with liquid and attach them to your battery. They come in different sizes to hold different amounts of liquid.

A clearomizer is usually clear (or see-through, hence the name) made of plastic, glass or sometimes metal and uses wicks that are sometimes visible and sometimes not. You fill this with liquid and attach them to your battery. They also come in different sizes to hold different amounts of liquid.

There is an excellent blog post around here somewhere that goes in to much more detail, give me a few and I'll see if I can find it.

EDIT - An excellent blog post by Baditude explains all the differences very well. Find it http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...-carto-tank-what-guide-juice-attachments.html

Cartomizer/ Carto- metal tube with stuffing and element. Holds anywhere form 1- 4 ml of juice. Carto is fully saturated and must be occasionally refilled when juice runs out.
Carto+Tank- a Carto with one or two holes punched in it. Carto is than placed in a glass, metal or plastic tank which is filled with juice- juice saturates Carto by way of hole in Carto. My Cartos with a tank last, before tight draw occurs: light juices- 80-90 ml. dark juices- 50-60 ml.

Clearomizer/ Clearo- a plastic, glass or metal tank with a silica wick and element. Contains NO stuffing. The rebuildable clearos come with heads (coil+ wick) that can be cheaply and easily replaced. When the head burns out simply unscrew the old head out and screw in new head- takes 10 secs. The head's life can also be extended by washing and dry burning.
There are 2 types of clearos- bottom coil and top coil. Top coil= warmer vape and bottom coil= cooler vape.

You're welcome. Yes one is a clearomizer with a replaceable head (wick+ coil) inside. The heads can even be rebuilt using Kanthal wire and silica/ cotton or hemp- very economical but you would need a digital multitester. I've been using the same clearomizers for over a year...of course I've been replacing/ rebuilding the heads. Realize there are 2 types of clearos- top coil= warmer vape and bottom coil= cooler vape. It's all personal preference...some LOVE or HATE one or the other.

I find the cartomizer gives a superior vape but the cartomizers are disposable.
Realize also some polycarbonate clearomizers and carto tanks can be damaged by "acidic" juices. That's the reason they came out with metal and glass tanks. Polypropylene clearos/ cart tanks is also supposed to be impervious to damage from acidic juices.

Many diff types of clearomizers and the pics below just shows a basic clearo disassembled.
Top Coil Clearomizer

Bottom Coil Clearomizer

Cartomizer+ Tank

Realize if buying a carto+ tank setup the cartos must be punched/ have holes in them. When I began vaping I started with cartomizers. Within 2 weeks I was using a carto+ tank. When clearomizers were released I began using them. Cartos by themselves are great BUT you have to be careful they don't run dry...thus the carto+ tank setup. Of course there's a learning curve to all the above and some clearomizers require "tweaking".

Thanks again I think I am going to stay away from cartomizers, Altogether
