What's the point in DIY?

I'm not doing very good on the flavoring pricing. I guess I made another mistake in the calculations. I was right to start. voidmist is expensive. 30 bucks for 8 15ml botltes, which equals the 4oz bottle at perfume for 13. However, you end up with 118ml of the same flavor for that price. On the other hand, you can buy 1oz bottles at perfume and end up paying between 20 and 25 for a variety of four. It would suck to get stuck with a single flavor when you've got the makings for 20 30ml bottles.

That's the price for one-stop-shopping! Be sure to include $hipping in your comparisons.

True! It's the grocery store marketing thing. Some places have eggs cheaper than another, but jack up the price on milk...most folks don't like having to go to more than one place to buy their stuff.

I'll probably pick up some fan boy flames but that's fine, I can take it lol. There's been a lot of great info in this thread and I'd like to try to add another 2 or 3 cents worth.

I researched and knew that I could get cheaper bulk prices than one stop, but I live from check to check and I needed to keep my totals down. One stop has a code that more than covered shipping and also plainly states on the page where you buy the nicotine that if you want gloves, just ask for them in the comments section of the order. (I not only got the free gloves, but a couple of pipettes as well). Long story a little shorter, I got a jug of vg, a jug of pg, 30ml of 48mg in vg, several flavors, gloves and pipettes all for less than 60 bucks shipped. I'm a happy customer. :vapor:

Thanks for all the great hints and great links. I am now about $135 into vaping and when my order I made last night (some DIY juice supplies) gets here that will be my six month supply (may have to add a little more for extra atty's or a bat or two (I only have 4 atty's on hand), but that will not add to much to the overall cost).

Do you realize how much less that this is when compared to the cost of my analogs?

This is so cheap... Now, I just have to fight the urge to upgrade my equipment (lol)...

+1 on PA for flavorings...I've never ordered from Voidmist (but plan to) but PA has incredible flavoring.

voidmist 3ml TFA flavor@ $1.60
OneStopDIY 6ml TFA Flavor@ $1.50= 2X for less than half the price?

Nic base seems to be pretty cheap but not their TFA flavors.

Just saying............................

Whether DIY homemade juices are cost effective depends on numerous variables.

One is inherent talent and acquired skills in making juices. That's no different from the marketplace of retail juice-makers. Some vendors make and sell extraordinary juices; others are quite pedestrian. Same with DIY. Some folks seems to have a knack for DIY juice-making; for others, the learning curve is just too steep, and they end up wasting time and money trying to do it themselves. Over the past year, I've gone from clueless to pretty competent as a DIYer. I doubt that I'll ever be brilliant, but I'm getting fairly good at making juices that are usually vapeable, often as good as retail juices, and on rare occasions even better. Experience makes a difference.

A major variable is the willingness to invest time and energy in being a good consumer to keep costs down---knowing where to buy ingredients cheaply, watching the 'deals and steals' and suppliers' threads for significant sales. The post above about one site selling Perfumer's Apprentice flavorings for half the price of another site is very relevant to know for cost efficiency.

A third variable is knowing which flavors of juice can be DIY'd easily, and which can't. If I wanted to replicate Janty RY4, AVE Boba's Bounty, NLV Bounty Hunter, or Copper Creek House Blend, odds are extremely low that I could come up with a juice that's even close. Those four are examples of retail juices that are superlative, extraordinary, and complex. I'm quite willing to pay the extra cost to have the real thing. On the other hand, if I just want a good Strawberry Waffle juice, DIY can indeed produce something as good or better than many retail versions of that dessert vape.

DIY juices usually contain only three ingredients: liquid nic, flavoring concentrate, and PG or VG. Here's an accurate rundown of my costs:

Last month, Good Prophets had a sale on unflavored nic juice---120mls of 36mg nic in either PG or VG for $5.99. I bought one bottle of each to add to my stash. My order was large enough with other items that shipping was free. Last year I bought 32 oz. bottles of pure PG and VG for a $15 each shipped. And I've been amassing flavoring concentrates all along. I now have 170 bottles of flavorings purchased for an average cost of 47¢/ml, which includes shipping.

OK, what's my cost to make 30mls of juice that has 20% flavoring concentration at 18mg nic strength? That will take 15mls of 36mg liquid nic, 6mls of flavoring, and 9mls of PG or VG.

liquid nic = $0.75 (5¢/ml x 15mls)
flavoring = $2.82 (47¢/ml x 6mls)
PG/VG = $0.18 (2¢/ml x 9mls)

Total cost for 30ml bottle of juice = $3.75---all things considered, that's fairly inexpensive.

Using only 10% flavorings reduces my cost to $2.40, while 30% flavorings increases my cost to $5.10. (I hardly ever use 30% flavoring, however, because too much flavoring concentrate tends to ruin the juice. Your mileage may vary, of course.)
