Alright... So I've been vaping for quite a while through all the innovations etc. I used to know it all, and now I feel as if I know nothing...

I decided to say screw it to all of the overly complicated stuff and got myself the Eleaf 50w when it came out and an aspire Atlantis(1.0) and have been using it since. Well it's starting to kick the bucket and time to look into something new, for the price and familiarity I'm pretty sure I'm going to pick up the kbox 70w.

And that's when I got so absurdly lost. What is this temperature control thing. Why is there 15 different types of coils for these new tanks? What is going on?

When did I become an old man?

Temp control devices monitor the temperature at the coil and cut power to the coil when it gets too hot, as determined by a user setting. These boxes make use of some of the coils you are seeing.

Personally, I have no use for temp control and don't bother with it. If you don't care either, and are satisfied with VV/VW devices like your iStick, then don't worry or bother with the temp control. Most temp control mods can be used as variable wattage devices, like your old iStick, with the old style coils.

Oh, and it happened very quickly over the last year or so.

I hate to admit it but this list honestly intimidates the crap out of me

Lol, man I miss the old days when things were simple.

It used to be about 5 real players in the hardware game and things were simple.

I remember when I tried my hand with rebuildables but I set things on fire too many times and left it alone.

Although I don't miss carrying around 3 ego style a batteries since they liked to randomly die on me.

I hear ya, the TC devices can be used in either mode, watts or tc.
I simply bought a pack of NI200 coils (nickel) for my Atlantis when I needed a new mod/battery. The TC batteries are the same price as the older tech so trying TC was not any extra cost really, just took some looking into. There are other choices than NI200 coils for temp control. I've found I really like the SS or stainless steel coils, they can be used in both power or TC modes, but some devices do not support SS for TC but still they work great in wattage mode anyways. NI 200 or TI/Titanium coils are to be used in TC only.

The main advantage for me with TC is one can take as long a vape as wanted without any fear of getting a burnt or dry hit. Never a dry hit is a big plus. Cheers.

I guess in my quest for simplicity I got exactly what I wanted huh. Honestly couldn't get much simpler and more reliable than what I had going on.

But looking into things it is simply amazing how fast things have changed. I can barely wrap my mind around all of this new stuff but I guess it's time to study.

Well, as stated by Hitmetwice, you can easily try temp control to see if you like it. Since lot of the new regulated mods are capable of running either way it is as simple as getting some coils and trying it - and most new tanks (even some older tanks like the Kanger Subtank Mini) have both types of coils available.

There is a minor learning curve as far a setting up your new mod for the desired temperature and coil type, but that is nothing to be intimidated by.

I tried it and it wasn't for me, but it's worth a shot. You may find your vaping nirvana.

Really the only draw for me is the supposed reduced usage of juice. I never trust any of the claims until I've verified them lol.

So no need to order a new tank to try these out huh makes life really simple, I'll throw in one or two in my order and check them out

Yeah, there are a lot of coils that'll fit the atlantis, Melo coils is one type but there are dozens that are interchangeable. Cheers.

I have always been behind. I haven't gotten shiny-itis because I didn't understand what any of it was. :p

I've been playing super catch-up the last couple of weeks because of the FDA deeming regulations. It's taking me out of my comfort zone for sure and pulling my focus away from other things, which I resent. However, by the time 8-8 hits, I should finally have an understanding of what everyone is talking about. :)

Welcome back! I was in a similar spot. I'd been vaping happily away with my kayfuns and provari for about 2 years. Then the Kayfun's both kicked it at the same time. I poked around here 6 months or so back and got a Lemo. Then I dropped the Lemo and it became a juice funnel (very effective at funneling juice from the bottle to the floor), so back I came, which led to a little spending spree and all sorts of new stuff.

I'm glad I did happen to pop back in though, because I came back just in time for all the FDA stuff. If you aren't up to date on that, do some more poking around here and read up so you can write letters to your reps and get involved. I don't want to go all Chicken Little on your thread, so I will leave it at that.

Feel your pain man. It looks like alphabet soup out there anymore. There is so much "stuff" now that I don't even know what half of it is.
The good news though .............. I DON'T CARE!!! So as for advising on what you should get, I don't have a clue. ;)
Stuff I'm using is so old that folks think it must be something new.

BTW this could be bought for vaping is 1859!

For a smoker that realizes this may be going away and wants to jump in and learn, it must be completely overwhelming. The number of choices is incredible now.
When I came to these forums in the fall of 2009, it took me 7-10 days of research to figure out what vaping was about and to pick a starter kit. You must have some idea of what was available back then. If I was coming here now, especially with The Deeming breathing down my neck, I think my mind would be blown.

TC is an option, but it's just one more step in the evolution of vaping. Power mode is probably the most used version of controlled vaping, but TC seems to be the next best thing. Why? Because it limits the possibility of overheating your juice and creating some of the bad chemicals that can occur in vaping.

You can't use Kanthal in temp mode. You are limited to titanium, nichrome, and stainless steel because those metals have properties that allow the mod to sense temperature changes by the coil's changing resistance. That allows the mod to automatically adjust the voltage or power to maintain the same vape level. A dry wick will shut down the vape and not let you create harmful chemicals. In a sense, even a mech mod will let you know when the wick is getting dry by the crappy taste you experience. TC might shut you down before that happens.

Many of us have TC mods, but lots of us still vape in voltage or power mode because it's more flexible. Any coil wire will work in voltage or power mode. Once you know what setting works for you, there's really no reason to change.

TC mode may be important for high wattage vaping with low resistance because it maintains the temperature and ensures that you won't exceed a certain heat setting in the coil. You can do that with any mod by sensing the temperature of the vape that enters your mouth. Turn it down if it's too hot.
