Freedom and Faith
Of ships and of fools, the sea has great need
Its bottomless belly to endlessly feed
Blame not Poseidon for some trespassers' fate
A beast will but feed, its hunger twill sate
Life is short bliss and death its reward
But freedom til death is our gift to guard
Go where thou wilst by means that you choose
Life is the least of the things you might lose
If you sail from Manila like galleons past
Or to the warm shallows you choose to cling fast
Death comes to all; though fear to those
without faith or honor before friends or foes
Guard yourself that you let no others guard you
Stay free and keep faith, Death fears the true
While brave, free men might ride ships out to sea
Ships will ride fools who refuse to be free
Does the patter of rain to your hearing drown out
The lament of the winds from their true redoubt?
Does rain drive your sails? Does mere sleep weave your dreams?
Were the fabric in rot you'd but stitch at the seams
Deep too many fathoms do these currents lie?
Do stormwinds blow farther than you would escry?
Is lightning so bright, overloud its sharp call
That you stare at your feet and your feeble rain-fall?
Already your freedom is rotted by blight
You've shuttered your hearing and guttered your sight
Your sensory gifts by your choice count for naught
You capitulate claim to the freedom of thought
Exeunt
Withered and spent and calloused and dry
The sea I call home now but
salt of my eye
Too long have I dallied 'midst dirt and decay
Too far from the sea I've elected to stray
Why let dust choke? Why let heat burn?
The sea plainly cries out for my return
When dealing with friends turns to dealing out pain
I would retire with what friends will remain
This vigil now ends on a note of regret
Against friendship, truth is but mere epithet
Shutter this lighthouse and padlock its door
Let stars show the way, this light burns no more
Take of it memory of truth guarded well
Take of it this farewell
