the real reason these things will get banned is because the people who we set up to protect our lives see any "new" highly addictive drug delivery system as not being in the "greater"public interest..
i am inclined to agree with them.. i am a nicotine addict i need the bloody things.. but i am fully aware my needs aint quite the same as the "greater good for the majority" factor that drives bodies like the FDA.. or at least the honest part of it..
this isnt about the safety of e liquid.. it isnt safe.. it might be "safer" than the alternatives for some.. but not the majority.. its just a new thing their kids can get hooked on..
our nannies have nicely demonized tobacco... the last thing they want is something new and just as addictive to replace it.. its "addicts" these dudes dont like.. so anything new thats addictive is gonna get attacked and frowned upon..
trog
I would agree that the FDA wants to ban these simply because they are nicotine delivery devices but I can't. Teens have been picking up real cigs for as long as I can remember and even tho those numbers are down they are still picking them up.
There are many OTC nicotine delivery devices such as NRT patches and gum that kids can get but its easier to scrape up 5 bucks or bum a Marlboro off a bud.
I think that the FDA's problem with the Ecig (as we all know their report was just so much hooey) is that they LOOK cool. Not the flavor issue as they stated. The ecig could reasonably be used as a fashion statement 0 nic or not.
Lets compare the ecig to the only other two inhaled NRTs on the market:
1. Ecig - pretty lights(even saw one that had alternating lights)... fake smoke... slim and sleek. Lets not forget the ones with 'More power'... takes a REAL man to smoke one!!
2. Nicotrol Inhaler - what can I say? It either looks like an unspent round or a duck's ..... They could offer realistic hand-tossed pizza flavor on that thing and I don't think a kid would touch it.
3. Nicotrol Nasal Spry - pretty self-explanatory.
Ok that is one side of the equation however, here is the other:
The ecig as far as I can tell ( but need data to support this theory) actually allows a smoker to quit if thats is what their goal is. I am not sure why this phenomenom exists except for the fact that it is more realistic and familiar.
The other two? Well, ok the inhaler is so asthetically offensive that most users probably do not use it as much as needed and get off before they are actually successful. The Nasal Spray? Not wanting to see anyone getting their after-dinner nicotine in a restaurant if they are using that.
The reality - kids are gonna smoke if they choose to whether ecig or analog. Is a kid gonna start off with an ecig with nicotine if they have a choice not to? I don't think so.. not for a fashion statement. There is no 'high' involved.
We are educating our kids about the danger of tobacco and nicotine and very effective ways. So in order to be cool with the banning of the ecig, a kid has no choice but to inhale not only the nicotine but the tar of an analog and the 4000+ checmicals that make that up.
Now my kid is the one who found this device for me I asked if he would try one of these things. His response? "Why? I don't need to stop smoking and I'm not putting anything in my lungs." Maybe he responded this way because he has watched my struggle to quit for many years.
