If anyone happened to try the folding and noticed that your computer slowed right down, if you fullscreen the client and goto expert you can turn off your gpu slot.

I am changing my comments about the nvidia cards I fired up a system with ATI/AMD card and also an issue.

I dug into it a bit and apparently it is a general issue with cards and windows; as windows doesn't have a priority system for gpu's.

Neaat, this seems far more worthwhile than SETI.

Am I missing something or are there no accounts, you just set the username you want to contribute under ? I'll have to check this out more later.

Edit: Sorted that, you *do* just put in a username, if you want to secure it, which isn't really necessary there's a link under the identity tab in configuration. Folding@home

When installing you have to give it a user name, use your forum name. And then for team information, you enter 223274 and you're part of team ECF.

i signed up, computer didnt slow down because i didnt allow it to use my gpu I also downgraded it from using 4 cores to 2 lol, it's going fast enough as it is.

Long story short, it uses your spare cpu cycles to crunch big math for analyzing data, in one case for cancer.

It has been around for over a decade, and basically everytime someone signs up it adds another computer/cpu to the mainframe.

I'm in there with ya! I got a quite large work unit initially so I won't show up on the ECF Scoreboard until tomorrow sometime. I'm surprised more people aren't jumping on this. ECF could really make a difference if we all pitched in our idle computer time. (not the time we are idly at the computer, the time that our computers are idle). Lol

Heh! Years ago, I was part of that SETI effort. At the moment, I have an old, slow laptop whose tired CPU is pinned at 100% most of the time. It also crashes from exhaustion often. I'll be forced to upgrade it in the very near future or risk losing access altogether. When I do, I'll come back and check this out.

I'm just relieved it has nothing to do with folding flyers and stuffing envelopes which is what I feared when I clicked this thread lol!!

I also did the computer SETI thing. The problem is as we now know the Star Gate is actually hidden in the coastal mountains of BC under cover of illegal activity and nobody in the galaxy uses carrier waves anymore, its so 50's.

So what are the combined laptops of the ECF supposed to do to fight cancer?

I'm using my netbook, which is basically an old slow laptop crammed into a cutesy little package, so I can more easily stare at 2 glowing boxes at once (computer and tv). I don't think it'll do much and my computer *really* isn't happy about it.

As far I can tell you could use any as many computer as you'd like, as long as you're submitting under the same name I would assume it combines them, but I haven't submitted anything yet to be sure. I'm running it on my netbook and htpc, so I'm hoping that's the case and that's what I did with SETI ages ago - I had that running on 4-5 computers.

I may be/probably am a lefty pessimist, but my first thought was that the inefficiency of cluster computing and the electrical usage or more so the production of said electricity will probably ultimately do more harm than good. However I just ignored that and thought that the ECF should try to get into the top 100 teams.

When using it on multiple computers, make sure you use the same login name, and it will combine your scores.

As far as I can recall, folding @ home has been around since the same time as SETI, at least I remember about a decade ago running both, which btw you can still do.

Project guy, I have 5 computers running it at home ( 2 children, htpc, main office, better half's laptop ) so teh more the merrier

Chargin if you still use your computer as you always do then it is minimal, the issue is the competitive geek in us wants the team to do well so we will suddenly start leaving all the computers on lol

Heck I know I was thinking about going around and overclocking all the computers ( been a while since I bothered doing that ) and installing extra video cards I had around to see if I could get more gpu slots going lol.

I believe Seti was the first to use this type of system but I could be wrong. Later boinc came out to let users run more then one project at the sametime.

I already am running three projects but will look into adding this one. One thing to note is when running boinc your computer uses more power. So in a small way you increase your carbon foot print by using more power. That isn't to say don't do it just that it does come with a tiny cost.

I actually learned of them looking for ways to stress test my overclocking for full load stability and when I found I could do that and do something cool (SETI = ALIENS! ) or helpful ( Folding = help to find cures ) it was win win.

I suppose one could negate the slight carbon footprint increase by using a company that provides "green electricity" like bullfrog or the like.

I joined Seti in 1999. I think folding came after that and Seti set the way for future projects. I could be wrong but I think Seti sort of started it all. The idea you could be searching for ET brought a lot of users. Back then it was a screen saver actually and later changed to running in the background as users didn't want to waste cpu power with a screen saver.

Ok its been installed, it says I'm "Online" and "Running" and I'm "Folding" some "protein" some questions.

1. Is it working?
2. It shows no progress
3. When will cancer be cured; and,
4. Where do I get my dynamite money?

Seti was the worlds biggest computer when they got it setup.

Sorry no dynamite but if you find a cure you get credit for it, or at least with Seti you get credit if you find life out there.

You want this installed. After Seti started boinic came out to let people work on more then on project. Boinc will let you run more then one project and even let you control how much power you want each one to get.
