Downside to cotton is some people can taste the cotton which is a turn-off and you cannot dry-burn a coil with cotton in place.
A dry hit with cotton is something a person never forgets.
This right here.

I am a cotton convert though never built tank heads. Been building Genesis and rda's for about 2 months now with balls but just got Peaches&Creme and it made it soooooooooooo much easier and better looking.

First, I want to say that I've never re-wicked a bottom coil clearo. That said, I can't stand silica wicks :nah: I think they had a nasty flavor, no matter what I did with them. That's a total personal preference thing, and why I gave up on clearos very early on. They just never performed well for me, or gave me anything close to a really good flavor (I had one CE something that was ok for a few days, but that was it). I recoiled and rewicked a Vivi before I got an RDA, and I used cotton, and it totally changed my vaping experience. It still wasn't great (I hated the Vivi Nova), but it was a lot better than the silica had been.

My friend never noticed a bad flavor and loved her clearos, so it's probably just something weird with my tastebuds. So, I always go with cotton, and I love it, but I would suggest trying both before deciding for sure what you want to use. Some people think cotton is a pain in the ...., some people love it, some people don't care if they use silica or cotton and are perfectly happy with either.

I have done protanks and EVODS with both. I prefer cotton.

One big reason is that it is super simple to yank the cotton out, then dry burn the coil, then insert fresh cotton. Doing this one coil can last me months. Fewer new coils mean fewer arguments with that bottom grommet means the grommet will stay in one piece longer.

I haven't tried cotton INSIDE the coil on the Protank yet, but so far having very good results with silica IN the coil, and cotton flavor wick over the top

Try it. Get some yarn. Bend a length of wire to use as a threading needle. Gently take out the old wick, put in new wick. If it's too tight remove some stands from the yarn. Snip off the extra, add juice and vape.

This post was found in an ancient ruin, possibly left by aliens.

I tried cotton once as a flavor wick after cleaning and dry burning while leaving the silica inside the coil. Miserable failure. I now believe that I used too much and choked off the supply.

But I am soon out of new coils and intend to try again, this time inside the coil. One question though. If I do manage to burn the cotton will that taste contaminate the rest of the tank? Or just swap the cotton and vape?

The only time I use silica now is in my Taifun GT when I'm vaping GVC - to me it gives a better flavour over cotton with this type of juice. All my other bottom coil and Kayfun style attys get the cotton treatment. Either a micro or nano coil.

I have just started using SS rope in genesis style attys (like the RSST) with an ekowool sleeve - it surprisingly wicks better than cotton and the flavour is amazing.

I normally use 100% cotton unbleached, untreated make up removal pads - easy to cut to size and work with. Just don't tell the Wife I've pinched them

In my experience, no, it doesn't contaminate the tank but you will need to clean and re-wick the head.

To everyone who hasn't rebuilt the coils on their protank/evods... Do Not Throw Out The Heads! Keep them in a safe place until you're ready to try rebuilding the coil. A micro-coil using 30G Kanthal is amazingly simple to do and the flavor/vapor you get from a micro w/ cotton is a brand new experience!

Only some simple tools are needed, a Multi-Meter or an Ohm Checker to check for shorts and test the resistance of your build and a small wisp of cotton and you are good to go.

I watched this video once, that's all it took and I've not spent one red cent on a new head since the summer... there are at least a dozen rebuilt heads around here at any given time ranging from 1.3 ohm to 2.5 ohm.

How's that for savings!

Both - Arthritic hands make working on most things difficult and work schedule makes it even more difficult.
I take my time and do my Kayfun style tanks and Dripping Addy's with cotton.
Piddly Diddly Clearo Heads get piled up and every so often as hands allow, I pop in fresh silica wicks/coils.

I've read all about how simple it is to replace the cotton every other, or every day. The hands say BS on that. The silica rebuilds can last for a month or more with an occasional rinse and dry burn.

Even rolling a cotton wick and attempting to thread it through a coil is difficult for my hands.

^and ekowool is just braided silica...are you giving it space to expand a little? it will expand a tiny bit more than normal silica...even though it barely expands to begin with.

I can understand how the more flimsy material would be harder to work with, but are you using cotton balls or rolled cotton? Since I started using rolled cotton, I have a lot more easier of a time getting a consistent amount. I take a little off the roll, pull apart as many layers as I can, and I have a thin layer I can cut to what I need..no pulling apart a cotton ball and have it seem like I have what I need, and it not be the case.

I'm sure you've tried it though..since you've been around the block just a few times:)

I've heard people boiling cotton to get rid of "chemicals" before using for a rebuild. Is this necessary?

HAPPY VAPING!

Organic cotton doesn't have any chemicals. CVS brand organic cotton is whitened without the use of bleach and done naturally. It doesn't hurt to boil it but drying it out can be a pain. I don't boil mine and get by just fine.
