But this is my problem. I don't know how similar e-cigs to shisha pipes but I remember trying a few of those in Egypt and it just made me feel really sick. I want to just go to a shop or one of those stalls that seem to be popping up all over the place and try them - I'm sure most let you try before you buy - then decide. My friend has a menthol one and that definitely gives you the smoking "hit" but obviously not the same flavour.
Ecig's and Shisha Pipes have absolutely nothing in common, except maybe some e-cigs are shaped like a pipe. But the idea of going into a shop and trying different flavors might not be a bad idea. Don't be scared to try other flavors besides menthols and tobaccos, there are alot of good unique flavors out there that have nothing to do with smoking and to some (me included) taste a hell of alot better.

Thanks I will give it a go. I read a review somewhere that once you go to e-cigs, if you go back to normal cigarettes, it tastes really dirty. I need to be like my dad. He just decided to give up smoking one day. 20 years later, he hasn't smoked another cigarette and absolutely HATES it! What does it take to hate smoking... apart from cancer?!!

I hate smoking now. It is true....

There are some terrific e-cigs on the market now. There is a new one called "Endura T18" from Innokin which is quite powerful and would be the place to start if you can escape from the idea of something that looks like a cigarette (only bigger and plastic).

You mentioned E-Lites. Three and a half years later I still can't forgive them for how they took my money and didn't help me in the slightest to quit smoking. Now they are a tobacco company, I think that completes their transformation into the most evil e-cig brand in the world. Them and BLU.
Most of what we/you/us see in the supermarkets is now tobacco company e-cigs. They are not interested in quality products. That's why whatever you do, you should be very careful. Try one but don't expect miracles.
Have you heard of Vype? They were advertising over Xmas. The infamous Vype e-pen is about as useful as a milkshake straw in quitting smoking. Either they want people to give up on e-cigs (and go back to smoking) or they sell £1 e-cigs for £25 and laugh all the way to the bank.

I can only respond to your question about flavors, because compared to the people at ECF, I'm pretty much a newbie regarding hardware. I like my pens. :)

Like you, when I first started, I was looking to mimic the tobacco flavor, and didn't have any success. So then I tried some different flavors. To be honest, I found most of them too strong, especially the fruit ones, and I love real fruit. And anything chocolate just tastes burned to me.

In the end, I found that my favorites are the more bland ones, and I get them at 1/3 strength. Things like vanilla, marshmallow, tea, and custard. I'm not big on the mixed flavors either. So maybe start there - look for lighter non-complex flavors, and see where that takes you.

I really need to give up smoking but am struggling! I tried the Clear Smoke e-cig last year. It ended up only costing me a fiver but I really, really dislike the taste so stopped using it after a while. I have tried my friend's who has a VIP one and, while I did much prefer the vaping sensation on this compared to the Clear Smoke, the tobacco flavour she has, to me, didn't taste even remotely similar. Her friend - who has been using e-cigs for a while now - said that she didn't have it on the right setting or something. I have no idea because I'm new to this.

I just want a recommendation for a good e-cigarette that tastes as close as you can get to the real thing? Thanks!

You are facing two issues here.
What DEVICE to use to emulate smoking as closely as possible for the same FEELING.
What Juice to use for the same FLAVOR.

While I cant really help you with the juice as I only used tobacco flavored juice for a month or two back in 2009, I can help you with the device. Please consider the Innokin Endura as seen in this video, as it is probably the easiest to use device around that closely emulates the cigarette experience. He also talks about practically every issue that a new vaper needs to know, and brings us full circle from the start of vaping to now.

PS: the contest mentioned is sadly over.

I started long ago on Volts and I can still recommend them. However, I would like to discuss flavors. I was a 40 year chain smoker so I knew...just knew...that I would need tobacco flavors. No fruity stuff for me. So at the beginning, almost any tobacco flavor was fine because my sense of taste and smell was basically trashed.

Well, after 2-3 months my senses started to come back (the world smells so much different than I remember from 1968). Now that same tobacco juice tasted like crap. Since we had no vape shops back then (we have 5 today), I went on my "great tobacco hunt of 2012". Dozens of samples ordered from many vendors. Everything tasted like crap.

Lo and behold I found fruity flavors. All of a sudden I'm a fruity kind of guy...who knew. Six months later I find I like unflavored the best.

My point is that what you like today will be different 3 months from now...a year from now it may be different still.

I'd love to turn into a non smoker! But I've tried and tried. The only real thing that has turned me into a non smoker was being pregnant with my 2 boys but that was different I guess as, for me anyway, smoking while pregnant was definitely not an option. And having another baby is not an option either, they're more expensive than any cigarettes!

The thing is, I've got to the point where I don't even particularly like smoking anymore. Sure there are the odd few that I thoroughly enjoy but the vast majority, I just smoke out of boredom (or because I'm hungry haha).

Thank you for commenting about e-lites. I was going to ask about that as I wondered if they were any good but obviously not.

No I haven't heard of Vipe and, just from googling it, I'm now worried that I'll get completely shafted and buy something crap. So I think I'll take a look at your recommendations.

And thank you also Grimwald. That does help as I currently smoke about 15 a day and I was wondering if this is something that I will have to get used to. I'm guessing that most people who smoke e-cigs wouldn't now go back to normal cigarettes? I just need to get over this filthy habit. I don't particularly want to be smoking e-cigs forever but I do just want something that will get me through the initial quitting period. I generally last about 4 or so days and then crack!

I'm just working my way through that video (the kids are still asleep which is unheard of at this time of the morning) but I just wondered if anyone could take a look at this website Electronic Cigarettes in Bluewater | Best E-Cig's Online They are based at a shopping centre near me. As someone said that some e-cigs aren't great, they're just a rip off, do they sell any decent ones?

I bought the Diamond Mist compact starter kit. I tried it at a stall near where I live and it tasted quite nice. The guy recommended for trying to give up smoking one of the cartridge ones that looks like a cigarette but I told him I'd already tried a similar looking one and I preferred the more vapoury kind. So he recommended this as a good starting point so will see how I get on. It was only £13 including the juice so not expensive either if I do decide it's not for me.

Interesting. The Diamond Mist is a bigger battery (not like a plastic over-sized cigarette) and it comes with a little tank, yes? Sounds promising. :)
He was wrong (by the way) to recommend anything cig-a-like to quit smoking. That's what I've been banging on about for 3 years. They say they do X amount of cigarettes and are the equivalent Nicotine of this and that, but it's all complete rubbish.
How do we know for sure? Because the different types of e-cigarette were tested by the Electronic Cigarette Trade Association of Canada. (Boy... I do get around! :) )
They proved (as in real science, not mumbo jumbo sales scams) that the minimum standard of e-cig to produce the same Nicotine as a real cigarette was an eGo e-cig vaping at/with various parameters of liquid strength and power (watts).
So - a Vype, whilst nice looking and what have you vapes at only 40% of the needed power to produce the right amount of Nicotine. It is not powerful enough to work. It's also sold by a tobacco company.... are there any surprises left in life?
and E-Lites, whilst claiming to 'do' 40 cigarettes is simply unable to get anywhere near a real cigarette... not even close. You would need unimaginable will-power to quit with E-Lites.
Then, we have absorption levels, but that's a 2 page explanation.

For you, it's going to be about finding a liquid you enjoy and making the commitment to just keep trying, day after day.

I'll come back later. Diamond Mist, £13 - can't really argue. :thumb:

If it wasn't for trying the liquid ones and coming on here, I probably would have thought about another cartridge one. Yes, this comes with the tank thing you fill up. Pretty sure this is the one we got (my husband is also a smoker) Diamond Mist Double E-Cigarette Kit: Amazon.co.uk: Health & Personal Care

Can you fill up with any liquid or does it have to be a specific type for brand I have (if that makes sense)? I guess I just need to persevere with this because it's still not stopping me from wanting a normal cigarette but I may try the menthol liquid as the couple I've tried have given a better hit if you know what I mean. To be honest, I don't even want to do this for a long time, just to get me over the cigarette cravings I have.

Smoking for me, as well as the obvious addiction, I think is more habit than anything else. If I'm out and distracted, I can go all day without a cigarette. Probably 9 out of the 10 cigarettes I smoke I don't even enjoy.

Yes, you can fill it up with any flavor you like (no specific brand of juice is required).

Look like a rebranded Kanger Evod Starter Kit. See this review to see if this is what you basically have.

I initially thought I wanted to mimac a cigarette as closely as possible in taste and form factor. I was very against trying other flavors. I couldn't find any tobacco e liquid that tasted like a cigarette. And now I can't imagine wanting to :)

You will be much happier with a small box mod and refillable tank. The box mod will give you much more freedom due to having longer battery life. Nothing worse than being away from home and having your battery die. If that happens to a new vapor, s/he will definitely buy a pack of cigarettes immediately.

To start, I would buy either:
Eleaf istick 30 or 40W, or
Innokin Coolfire IV

Both have a long lasting internal battery so you don't need a charger or need to learn about battery safety yet. If you can afford two, get two. Then when one is charging, you'll be able to leave the house with the other. Also, having a backup is important. If something goes wrong with one you won't be tempted to run out and buy cigs. One doesn't have to break for there to be a problem. When you are a newb, sometimes you just (temporarily) mess things up :). We all did.

I would get an Eleaf Air tank and extra coils as well. They are very inexpensive, and very popular here on ECF. Again, get two if you can. Just in case you goof one up, break it, and so you can have two flavors. One flavor can get boring.

Go to a B&M and sample juices so you can find some flavors you like.

I would also get 18mg e liquid. You've had a hard time quitting (me, too), and I think you'll need that extra oomph to get over the hump. They may recommend 12mg since you only smoke 15 a day. I never would've quit using 12mg to start. It took me 2 months of dual use to quit with 18. And yes, stick it out. Not everyone quits right away. If I hadn't stuck it out for 2 months, I wouldn't have quit.

You can fill with any liquid you like, more or less @susan_1981

With tobacco flavours you just have to find one you like.. they don't taste of ... smoke, they never do.

You could try some of the £1 tobaccos.
£1 E Liquid | Buy Tobacco Flavoured Nicotine 10ml E Liquid UK | Cheap Tobacco Vape Juice

I've always had more tobacco on the go than say Custard or Lime.
Today, I've had RY4 on the go and some curious Blackcurrant...

Your post echoes my own past to me three years ago. At first I wanted a cig-alike, and one that tasted like my Morleys. It didn't exist. So I moved to a clearo on an eGo battery, looking for a "marbo" juice that tasted like what I smoked. It didn't exist. There were plenty of juices billing themselves as the same flavor, but all were disappointments. So was my eGo/clearo rig. I progressed through an array of hardware over the next three weeks, and spent a ridiculous amount on juices over the next few months. I ended up with a sub-ohm genny on a mech, and started making my own juice. I never did get the same flavor as what I smoked, but in time I didn't have to anymore. I concluded that like the cigs themselves, that was something I was compelled to leave behind.
