wait am I spreading misinformation? I was under the impression that a variable wattage device will change the voltage higher or lower once you set the wattage. So if you set the wattage to wherever for a 3ohm carto, and you slap a 1.5 ohm carto on it, it will lower the volts.. Is this true or have I been spreading misinfo? I need to know otherwise I've been giving the WRONG information. Not good. Someone help?

you haven't been spreading misinformation, however the only truly accurate device with VW right now is the darwin...and good luck finding one, BUT, variable voltage is STILL more accurate, and more fine-tunable

with a Variable wattage mod such as the zmax, you set the wattage to what tastes and feels great and dont mess with it again. With a variable voltage mod, you are constantly adjusting according to atomizer resistances (ohm). Keep that in mind :D
If you prefer vaping ALL of your flavors with the same "heat", that's fine. Same thing goes if you use different resistance attys; variable wattage would provide you with some benefits.

I on the other hand, am strictly a cartomizer tank person who has the same 3 ohm single coil carto in all of my tanks. I like to adjust the voltage, or heat, depending upon the flavor. For example, my fruit flavors taste best in the 3.4-3.7v range, while my coffee flavors taste best in the 4.4v-5v range. Variable wattage would not provide my style of vaping any benefit at all.

Your info is correct, Plumes.91.

There is one other good VW Mod out right now but it's production is being held while some anodizing issues are worked out. It is based on the Evolv (the people who make the Darwin) DMA12 board. It's the Texas Select Vapor's Stallion. This IS the unit I have and I love it. Nothing exiting (no display) but it totally rocks for performance.

Good points, gimmieshelter31. I did point out one real advantage to the constant wattage produced by a good VW mod (adjusts to changing atty resistance as it heats).
BTW, I do not (yet) own a Provari but have used a couple and have played with quite a few...and spoken with their owners who are all VERY happy with their purchases. That said, I have spoken with a number of VMax/ZMax owners who are just as thrilled with their units...they got "good" ones.
The center post issue elmattias encountered not withstanding, I would check out the video review by PBusardo on the Vector (it's embedded in the listing page at vaporbeast). No, I don't own one of these either, so I can't give first-hand experience.

Agreed. And how many Provari owners are frugal enough, or satify-able enough to just buy ONE Provari and be done with it for the rest of their lives, anyway? I mean, I can't count the number of "Vape Stations" I've seen on here that have Provaris (PLURAL) and half a dozen other mods, and are ever-increasing like a warren of rabbits.

Anyone with $150 to drop on an E-cig is probably in the same class of consumers that buy whatever is on the Stereophile Recommended List when they need an upgrade in their stereo--buy the "best", hold onto it until the "Next Best Thing" comes out, sell your old "Best" to a newb, and drop another 3 figures for the most recent piece of status jewelry...

I take offense to your blanket categorization . I started with a ego knockoff, saw the 650mAh batts were not gonna cut it long-term and lived somewhat happily with a $45 Maxi Roughstack ,18650 batteries and LR attys. I treated myself to a Provari (after a year and a half of not smoking cigarettes as I knew its what I wanted and I couldn't afford to make a "penny wise, pound foolish" buying decision. I was this close to buying a Lambo 4.0 because it was a hell of a lot cheaper. The decision wasn't about status, but reliability and what was gonna work for me.

You are in Maryland. I think a carton of smokes is $60+ dollars now? You live once. Treat yourself.

BTW, I'm quite happy with my mid-fi craigslist acquired system. Though I am happy my SL-1200mkll (not Stereophile approved :)) has appreciated a bit since being discontinued.

Well, the gripper is VV, not VW but, really, it's a real debatable issue between the two. You are talking big bucks to go VW (and have one that works) so, just keep it simple and look at the VV's.
As far as what the Gripper will do, it is rated at 4 amps but real-world tests have shown it to be a 3 amp unit. This is plenty for most things and will provide a good experience for all but the most power hungry attys.
I've done some quick checks on reviews and the summary blurb from EcigAdvanced seems to sum up the things I've seen:
"Pros:
-The VV Gripper uses pulse width modulation (PWM) which gives it exceptional battery life.
-The mod is a great entry to variable voltage for less than $50, a price that’s tough to beat for most mods with big battery, variable voltage or both.
-The voltage output is accurate based on Matt’s test with an oscilloscope
Cons:
-The mod suffers from questionable or poor build quality, a common problem on some Chinese made mods. Matt mentions that he hasn’t had it long enough to make a statement on its durability, but the seam where the body of the mod fits together and the wiggle in the buttons point to poor build quality and the possibility of juice getting into the unit if the user is not careful.
Overall:
The VV Gripper looks to be more functionally sound than the V-Max, although it may have some issues with build quality, it does exactly what it is supposed to do and offers an very functional variable voltage mod at a bargain (under $50)."

Here's a pretty in-depth review from a member here

My 2 bits on a tank. Check out the Boge DCT.
Though I am still evaluating it’s performance, one of the best deals I have seen on a carto tank is the Boge DCT. valuevapor.com has them for $7. (Boge DCT with Aluminum Caps [Boge-DCT] - $6.99 : ValueVapor.com, electronic cigarettes, e-liquid, e-cig, 510, 901, atomizers, dekang, vapure, hangsen, boge, ego, slb, joye). Polished aluminum end caps and 1.6 ohm dual-coil carto and a drip tip for $7 aint bad at all. They have replacement cartos for $2 a piece (cheeeep).

Other then the fact you pulled 6 months as the lifetime out of thin air, mods are changing so much these days. In 6 months time we will have the new favorites to pick from.

In 6 months a Provari will still be a "favorite" If you've never actually tried one or held one in your hand you have no basis for argument. The quality shows through with everything in this mod and the number one thing new Provari owners say :Why did I wait so long to get one of these"

Peruse the forums for a week or so, keeping a lookout for vmax/zmax threads and you'll find a fair few of them are people having problems with them.

Problem with DCT tanks is in the tubes. Pyrex is the way to go for durability and 100 percent clean flavor

Mark83uk, many are happy with their lavatubes, vmax, zmax etc. You will not find a consensus. I find some of the arguments hilarious really. In the midst of even the most heated are some gems of knowledge that I file away for later reference. Kind of like automobiles. If you buy X brand auto and it is a lemon, chances are you will never buy another regardless of quality improvements. You must weigh what factors are important to you. You pay your money and take your chances.

Research some of the mods talked about in this thread. There are threads galore discussing the virtues and vices of each. Weigh them each carefully, make a decision and vape happily regardless if I or anyone else would purchase the same thing.

you Baditude lol
Ohhh, OK.

Actually, I know very little about the Gripper. But from just what the above mini-review stated I wouldn't waste my money on a plastic mod. It sounds like it couldn't be very durable and like most of the Chinese mods, likely only last a few months.

As you may be able to tell, I am biased against any Chinese-made APV's. Compared to mods made from free world countries, its like comparing Yugos to BMWs. The Chinese business philosophy seems built on "make'm cheap, and make'm fast, somebody will buy it." There seems to be so much competition between Chinese manufacturers that the imputus is to be the first to put out a new product with the latest feature, regardless of how well that latest feature works. The customers suffer by essentially being the beta testers for their products; essentially the customer IS their R&D department. Customers find the issues, and the manufacturer puts out v2 a month or two later. Process repeated, v3 comes out 3-4 months down the road. We've seen this with the Vivi Nova tanks, too. They're currently on v3 now in a time's span of what? 4 months?

Now, some people will say that the manufacturer is listening to the customer and responding by making rapid improvements in the product. I say the product should have been stuck in R&D until the product is perfected for the market, and then released. This seems to be the business philosophy of the free world.

If you feel that the Gripper is worth $50 or so, buy one. I never would. I place more value into a mod that will last, has a decent warranty, and has a manufacturer who will service it even after the warranty is over. None of the Chinese-made mods fit in that category, but then the people who buy them don't expect them to last that long in the first place. They can be considered as disposable as an eGo in my opinion.

Consider just how much you will be using your mod. Probably raise it to your lips a couple hundred times a day? Every day. I want to have confidence that my device is going to work every time, every day, etc. For myself, I have confidence in my Provari to provide me with dependability and a consistant vape every time it touches my lips. I firmly believe you get what you pay for with a Provari.

Do I believe a Provari is for everyone? No, but only because the initial cost factor prevents most people from even considering one. But having made that statement, not everyone has the same requirements that I have in a mod, and the cheaper Chinese mods are able to fill a need for those people.

Whatever keeps you off the smokes and works for you...vape on. :vapor:

in defense of vaporbeast (because it truly is an amazing vendor), they did immediately replace my vector with an entire new unit for that one broken center post seal and i haven't had the issue since, however, i haven't put nearly as much mileage on the thing since having it replaced, as i'm worried about tearing the seal again.
