[News anchor] The World Health Organization is calling for the regulation of the sales of e-cigarette in the Philippines. Meanwhile, the Philippine Food and Drug Administration insisted that they will not register the product. Reporting is Abner Mercado.
There is wisespread use of the e-cigarette or elctronic [sic] cigarette that is used as an alternative to traditional cigarette but the doctors are warning that this product still has a threat to health. This is why the World Health Organizations [sic] wants to regulate the sale of this product.
[Different voice, identified by text in video as Dr. Florante Trinidad, Technical Officer, Tobacco Free Initiative, WHO, Western Pacific Region] The most dangerous thing about this product is that the nicotine goes directly to the lungs while regular cigarettes have a filter. This delivery device the electronic cigarette the nicotine goes directly to the lungs.
[Mercado] The World Health Organization asks that the Philippine Department of Health to issue rules regarding the sale of electronic cigarette.
[Trinidad] It should be the case before they seek to get a license to operate. They should conduct mass studies to determine what chemicals or ingredients are present in the electronic cigarette and that will be part of the documentary requirement for them to have a license to operate.
[Mercado] There are no regulations presently with regard to electronic cigarette at the Food and Drug Administration but right now according to FDA Director General Dr. Kenneth Hartigan-Go they will not release any permit.
[Hartigan-Go] They should not be allowed to register because just like any other tobacco they have chemicals. This electronic cigarette is a drug delivery device and contains nicotine.
[Mercado] Accoring [sic] to the agency even if the product is not registered with them it can still be regulated by the Department of Health.
