Who is using 14500 Protected in Protege?

Steve, I got a multimeter and understand what to do on mesuring voltage. My question is, when a batty starts out around 4.2 V, what am I looking for? What voltage should it hold at for several hours before taking a dive? What would be considered the voltage dive that they are too weak to vape at? Thanks.

I'm sure Steve will weigh in at some point, Lucky. What I've found though is kind of ironic. We use 3.7 volt batteries, right? I've found that TH, vapor and taste all drop off at about 3.7-ish volts. Yes, I measure before and after when I have the opportunity to do so.

And, to take this a step further... So much is made about protected batteries and their ability to shut down before the batteries over-discharge. The truth is that voltage protection is built in somewhere around 2.5 volts or WAY after we would change them anyway.

Shiva's suggestion to use an unprotected battery as a trial is spot on. Half of my batteries (10440s) are unprotected and they perform better overall than the protected ones. YMMV. Yadda, yadda, yadda.

I understand what you are saying, Richie. Protected ones protect against 3 things, over charging, over disscharging, and short circuiting.

I will try Steve's and the ultrafire and go from there on what I do/buy. I'm still curious about the AWs.

hehe. Good point and I will tell you as soon as it happens on this one. This one started out about 40 minutes ago at 4.2 v. and I THINK this is the only good one I have possibly. It's currently at 3.96 v still and I'm okay with it. I'll keep monitoring. I'm pretty sure this is the only one that I have that sorta worked.

I'm like Ritchie, I usually find I'm changing batts at around 3.7v because I like the extra umph you get from the higher voltage.

Tenergys are well respected batts. I've been using the unprotected ones from PS (still protected from over and under discharge) for 2 months now and they work very well.

If you're still having trouble, have you tested the voltage at the adapter? It should be close to 4.2 there as well. I usually see around 4.18v.

No, Steve has my entire Protege, including the adapter plus 2 of my battys. If you read Steve's comments, he says mine crashed within 30-40 minutes, but I do not know what it crashed to. Soooooooooo how long do your battys HOLD at 3.7 v or above??

It's very hard to test batteries unloaded and get a lot of meaningful data. Steve has a test jig though and should be able to do it. But it still takes time to do it properly.

I think it's safe to say that the QC at the factory is nill to non-existant, or they sell the batteries that don't meet the specs at a low price to some merchants.

You can buy a high performance battery charger that will test and analize the batteries to be sure they are in good condition, if you want to spend several hundred dollars.

Anywhere from 4 hrs. to half a day. Depends on how much I vape (usually a lot ) and when I feel like getting the 4.2v kick back.

Ok, the UltraFire that I can vape consistently on for hours is fully charged and reads 4.05v. It's in the envelope and will ship out to Lucky Monday morning.

I just used a Tenergy battery for 8 hours today. After 8 hours of pretty steady vaping it read 3.72v... didn't check voltage before I started. Vapor dropped off pretty fast after that.
I put in a fresh protected Trustfire that read 4.09v and will report my findings tomorrow.

The batt I popped in this morning has several hours of vaping on it all total (still vaping good), just took a reading and it was 3.93. But I just tried my multimeter for the first time yesterday so haven't done anything scientific at certain times or anything.

started at... 4.09v
after 1 hr.... 3.96v
after 2 hrs... 3.92v
after 3 hrs... 3.84v
after 4 hrs... 3.76v
after 5 hrs... 3.68v

The Tenergy battery is actually 3 weeks older and has gotten more use because it fits in my little plastic AA battery holder. It's easier to take with me while the Trustfire is so long it won't fit in the holder at all.

I was going thru the same thing. One minute my Protege was hitting good and then dead. I would try everything to get it to hit the way I think it should. Sooo when i read this post I thought that is it! the battery. I also had bought the cheap batteries for DX and that must be it. Although, I still was using the one that originally came with my Protege so why is that one no good? This morning I was fed up. I took my Protege apart,like I had so many times, and had my boyfriend look at the switch. The black plastic piece, when depressed by itself, was going below the grey plastic rim that surrounds it. He took a round piece of plastic and stuck it to it and we reassembled and all thoughs bad batteries and bad atomizers WORKED. I am, at least for now, vaping the Protege the way I think it should be vaped.

I use them sometimes and hav e not noticed an early reduction in vape at all. I never really timed it but they seemed to perform pretty much as consistent as the non protected batteries I for with my protege. I'm going to pay attention to this and see if there is an actusal difference between the 2 on my next battery change and I'll post my experience.

Thank you for posting this! Since I've been here last, I have been finally using a multi meter also. It has really helped my sanity. LOL What I am finding on these trust fires, the ones I have right now all out of the package, they are not dropping as fast as Steve said my brand new one that I sent him was, BUT, they still drop fairly fast, faster than what you posted above, and I have now found that once it hits below 3.8 v, I can't stand it. I get zero throat hit anymore and it's just not fun. I am going through every battery I have right now and the ones that drop too fast are getting round filed and I will try Steve's Tenergys and also Silv's trust fire protected. Thank you so much for everyone that has given their input and help here! It helps to talk it all through.

EXACTLY what I was dealing with so I thought it was the switch leaking, but ya, I had to fuss so much with the swich. I don't know! In anycase, I did order a mechanical one too for the future.

Since this mornings post I am vaping perfectly and I know it is the switch. I am no longer jealous of the others. My Protege is great. Simple fix I think. Good Luck with yours. It is trial and error but much better than liting up!!

Steve says my switch was fine. He says it's my batteries. I know he must be right because they are reacting exactly the same on a new mod I have that even has a mechanical switch.
