Why are my cartomizers losing their throat hit after half a day?

Hi, I'm a new vapor. My name is Wayne and I'm using e cigs to help me quit smoking. I was a half a pack a day smoker and haven't had a real cig in 4 1/2 days. I have a kGo and vape 24-nic or lower. I find that the throat hit is what satisfies my nicotine addiction. I'm try to quit so it's important to me. I'm vaping 80/20. Is it normal for cartos to lose their throat hit? I'm about to try a new brand so hopefully it's different. Any advice would be great. Thanks!

What make and size cartomizers are you using? I use Smoktech LR XL cartos that hold a tad less then 2ml of juice. I vape off about about 1ml from each carto before refilling. It takes me about half a day to vape 1ml.

Cartos will produce less vapor as you vape them down. I find that vaping past 1/2 capacity of the XL carto increases the chance of drying out the carto too far and burning the filler. Refilling at 1/2 capacity also keeps the vapor production more constistant.

What kind of cartomizers are you using? You get the best vape (IMO) with low resistance cartomizers, like 1.7 or 2.0. Also, make sure your carto is full of juice.

Make sure you keep your batteries fully charged. You don't have to wait until your battery is dead to recharge. In fact, you extend the life of your battery if you charge it before it's dead. I usually have a couple pv's going and when the carto on one gets a bit warm, switch to the other pv.

You might want to get another e-liquid slightly higher in nicotine for when you need a little more TH. Most people naturally drop their nicotine the longer they're vaping but some people need a bit higher when they start.

Here's some good info about that

Make sure you're drinking lottsa water. I drink 1 1/2 litres per day as vaping dehydrates us and dehydration can negate the vaping experience.
First fill of the carto is VERY important. Make absolute sure the entire carto is saturated top to bottom. If need be stick a round toothpick in the airway to prevent juice from entering. I use the ST 1.7 XL cartos and love them- holds more juice.

Edit: yzer- he's using Standard not XL.

He uses Boge cartos but they're identical to ST Standard cartos.

I use the condom method to fill the cartomizer in the beginning. I use 1 and 3/4ths full of juice in the cap. After that I put 6-7 drops in when the vape lessens or I get a burnt taste. Am I just not adding enough juice?

You're probably not adding enough juice. 6-7 drops is usually not enough unless your carto is still pretty full but if you are getting a burned taste, it is most likely not. So, I would drip about 15 drops in the polyfil, sometimes even 20. It depends, look in there, when you see the top of the filler material getting nice and wet, you should be good to go. Don't overfil, though, it will give you a gurgeling noise if liquid goes down the air tube in the middle. I assume you are using manual, sealed batteries, not automatics, right? That's exactly why I don't care too much for cartos, I use some clearomizers, however, they tend to crack and leak. Most days, I use my Phiniac Pyrex tank. Don't have to worry about running dry, no burnt taste..... (unless I don't prime my brand-new tank cartomizer good enough - been there, done that - ruined two.).... NASTY taste then!

The filler material will get a translucent (slushie) look and stay looking that way when the filler is saturated. I always drip fill, even on the dry fill. Drip filling doesn't take that much longer than condom filling and I rarely get juice into the air hole at all. By the way, I love pbusardo's videos. I just do some things differently.

I never drip fill a carto while it is mounted on the PV. I always take it off. When I think the carto is getting close to being filled I stand it up on the counter top, battery end down. When a carto is saturated a little juice (less than a drop) will leak out the carto and onto the counter top. The filler will also look like a slushie at this time.

Hold the carto up to a light. If the hole is clear you are good to go. If not, blow that juice out of the air hole by blowing lightly into the drip tip end of the carto. Catch the surplus onto a paper towel.

I re-use the silicon caps (condoms) for leak-free carrying of filled spare cartos. I also toss the white plastic mouth pieces and use a drip tip.

How many drops = 1 ml of juice? People will give you different answers for this. I drip from 30ml plastic bottles using mostly PG juice. As close as I can figure 30 drops = 1 ml.

You're both welcome but the real credit has to go to PBusardo. I really enjoy his videos and I'm glad I could help.
Happy Vaping.
P.S. I use a tank and get 2 weeks+ out my carto before they begin to tight draw. After you get the hang of vaping you could move up to tanks- less filling (maybe once per day) and less chance of burnt carto.

By the sound of it you're not doing anything wrong (bottom feed then drip is ok). I think your liquid is too thick that's all. Try a thinner juice - screw on a brand new carto and fire in some PG-based liquid. Heavy VG is no good for cartos - I tried VG in my Boges and a Smoketech and the same burnt thing happened- not enough flow. If you don't like PG try a 20/80 VG/PG mix or try thinning with a little distilled water.

I've been syringe filling mine and so far so good, I think. I'm still new at this too.

What I've been doing is drawing about 1-3/4 to 2 mL into my syringe then slipping the needle along the side of the polyfill (on the outside between the carto tube and the polyfill) and sloooowly pressing the plunger until I get all the juice in or I see a single drop fall from the battery end. I then gently blow out the airway and call it good.

I figure, since I'm filling from the bottom up, once I see the top of the polyfill dampen the the carto is as full as it will get.

Am I crazy or is my logic sound?

Don't think you are crazy at all. Used properly as you do, the syringe is another great way to fill cartos. I'm lazy at heart and just don't want another piece of gear laying around that I will eventually have to wash.

LOL you are quite logical. There have been quite the "discussions" in relation to the best way to fill a carto always ending in argument. Some LOVE the syringe while others LOVE the condom. As long as it does the job it's all good IMO.
