Hey all, just curious as to why I have had such bad luck at converting people or even getting people to try vaping.

Saturday night I was out with some friends and it was the first night I was out with this particular group with my Ego. When we all first got together they were all interested in what in the world I had, as well as curious. I explained it to them as well as told them I had been smoke free for nearly a couple of weeks on it and they just kind of laughed and gave me that OK WHATEVER look. I explained to them all of the positives of it like not smelling like smoke, how much better I feel, how great it tastes, how easy it was to switch and how much better it is than smoking but still they didn't seem too care much. Only one of my friends was willing to try it, and when he took a puff off my ego of 24mg Menthol from Liberty-Flights he said it tasted like a**. I said, so do cigarettes, but with these there's thousands of flavors to choose from and you can find something you like, but he said I'll pass.

At work this week, I have started showing the smokers I used to smoke with around the office my PV. Again, I have told them all about it... about all the noticeable effects I've noticed improving in my health in only such a short time and how it feels so much like a cigarette going down but so much more pleasurable. The benefits and everything I mentioned above to the last crowd I mentioned here. The people at work were interested as well, they even liked the fact I was doing it and thought it was really cool. It was only until I said "I can give the website that I got mine from, and help you pick out a good one to get you started, as well as a forum that is very helpful if you're interested" that they pretty much acted like they weren't interested and they were happy smoking.

Only ONE person out of 10+ at my work took the website and forum address to check into it. I work at a large courthouse where I know pretty much everyone from the top dog to the janitors and I must have talked to 15 people but only one has been interested. It's kind of discouraging and embarassing trying to get people to try it and getting turned down because I know it worked so well for me. I know it's not for everyone, but I know good and well if just SOME of these people would try it they would realize that it is pleasurable, there is many benefits and positives and so much healthier. I just can't get em to take that first step.

I guess when I first seen one and learned about it I immediately was excited to get started and try it out. Guess I have to learn not everyone is like me. Sorry for rattling on, had a lot on my mind.

You are young judging from your avatar... and I'm not suggesting that means you are unintelligent or imature. You will find some people are resistant to change. Do what you feel is best for you, do it in front of them, do it often, and keep your own counsel. You'll find some of them if not all of them will eventually follow.

To the younger crowd, they laugh the whole e-cig idea off. My sons friends (19 and 20) are very curious as to what I am puffing on. I tell them. I get mixed responses but none of them are interested in switching. The 30 and over crowd, who have been a slave to cigarettes for most of their lives, are more interested. Though only a few I have talked to were willing to even try an e -cig. I have a lot of smoker friends. I have converted 2 to completely switch, another 2 use both, and while the rest appreciate the fact that I have quit cigarettes, they just aren't interested.

I think a person has to WANT to quit smoking to fully engage the idea. Sadly, a lot of people do not truly want to quit, although they tell you they do.

all my smoking friends are social smokers-less than a pack a week or so. They haven't had bad effects from smoking (yet?) and think the e-cigarette is dorky.

Also, if you push people who aren't totally ready, they will push back, hard. Just try to be a good example and the curious ones will come to you.

Also I think they feel a bit threatened by the whole thing. I got a friend that is anyway and I think she's a bit ticked that she lost her smoking buddy.
The best thing to do is not get pushy with it but that doesn't mean you can't throw a comment in now and then.

I don't cough anymore.
Wow, I can do this now and it's something I haven't done in years!!!
Boy, this stuff taste great!!!

You got a number of good responses. You appear to be young (20's) which means you are much smarter than your friends. I believe the average age of vapers on ECF from several polls is around 45 - 50. Most younger smokers have not started to feel the affects of smoking and thus do not want to be bothered with the effort it takes to switch. Even though vaping is an easier method to quit tobacco than NRT products, you still have to WANT to quit, IMO for it to work.

Just keep vaping and some of your friends may eventually realize that you are much smarter than they are.

I think that some people are afraid. They're afraid of trying e-cigs and failing. They're afraid of what people will think when they're seen with a "fake cigarette." They're afraid of the unknown, period.

I know plenty of people who thought that my PV would end up being a passing fad and I'd eventually give it up and go back to smoking. Nope. 8 months later and I'm still going strong.

One of the guys on my team smokes. He's the only smoker on our team. I went outside with him one day after a particularly trying morning. We both just needed to walk away from our phones and computers for a bit. When we came back another gal on the team said to me "if he gets you smoking again I'm gonna beat his ... and then I'll beat yours!" I told her there wasn't a chance in hell and that I was trying to get him to try out vaping. I keep dangling that carrot because who gets to vape at her desk? Me. I see how he looks whenever he comes back in from smoking...you know...that hang dog look. I'm just waiting for him to ask. If he does, then I'll be more than happy to point him in the right direction. If he doesn't, then I'll be gloating come winter while he freezes his ... off!

You can't make people do anything they don't want to, especially where an addiction is present. And smoking is an addiction, just like vaping. Ours just happens to taste better and doesn't offend others.

It took me over 6 months to break down and get my first 510 kit. A fellow worker had started vaping and gave me all the information. I really drug my feet. So give the people you're trying to convert time. I was always told that change only happens when the pain of change is less than the pain of staying the same.

My neighbor wants to switch. She has tried my various flavors, when I go over to her house with my pv and she's smoking outside because her kids have asthma. But her excuse is..she dont have the money. I have a brand new 510 I would sell to her at my cost. She spends about $25 on a carton of smokes (real cheapies) and smokes quite a bit, but doesnt have the money. I would think that the health of her children would be enough to give me the money for the pv than the store for smokes...? But she's young too. Maybe 25?

I never try to "convert" people. There are a few vapers out there who learned about it from me, though (relatives, friends, and strangers). - I answer questions when asked. I'll even let someone try whatever PV I'm carrying if they want to.

I was recently surprised by someone. - this is a bit of a long story but I'll try to keep it short:

A couple of months ago, I was in a friends business and he handed me his shiny new Alpha to try. He got called away to deal with a vendor, so I sat down and started vaping. - A lady walked in and after a couple of minutes, she stomped over to me and started yelling at me about the legality of smoking indoors etc etc etc.

I'm not proud of what I said to her and I won't repeat it (can't on ECF anyway without summoning the ire of a moderator or two). It was really out of character for me... the result was that she ran away from me like I was chasing her with an axe. No kidding. I thought for sure she'd be calling the cops and I would be in for some drama. - - And explaining to my friend why I was chasing away his customers turned out to be a little uncomfortable, too... but he laughed and forgave me on the spot.

Well, last week, I was sitting in my friends business happily vaping away with my little bottom feeder and that very same lady walked right up and sat down with me. She told me about her husband of 30 years dying from lung cancer and she told me about her five kids who all smoke. She proceeded to ask so many questions about e-cigs that I honestly couldn't keep up and answer them all.

My friend brought out a laptop and sat down with us. We spent the next 45 minutes or so answering questions and sending links to her email.

People can and will surprise you. You just have to let them do so in their own time.

I don't actively try to convert people. When asked I will explain vaping to them, and if interested they will follow up with further questions. Younger people I have found seem to be way more resistant to change compared to older people. One friend of the family did purchase a starter kit, but as far as I know has not bothered with it at all. As someone else said, you can lead a smoker to PV's but you can't make them vape.

If and when they are ready I guess they will go there. If not, then there is not a whole lot you can do about it :(

Change is difficult- and in order to change a behavior the consequences of continuing the behavior have to be MORE painful than the change. In a nutshell...it's why "I'll give you something to cry about" always worked on us kids. If you look at people who managed to quit- it's usually around some sort of life or health event- getting COPD, or having a heart attack, or getting pregnant. I also know folks who quit when their kids said something that broke their hearts.

In NY it's pretty easy to get people to look into vaping- one puff, and a business card is all it really takes. Smokes are $10 a pack- a Riva starter kit is $30. New Yorkers LOVE depriving the state of cigarette taxes. I paid more in cigarette taxes than I did in property taxes. Every time I think of lighting up an analog- I think of that $2000 a year in taxes, and get giddy. Craving averted.

YMMV. If cigarettes are cheap where you live it's a tougher sell. Just be happy you quit before you really messed yourself up on analogs.

People are going to do what there going to do. I smoked analogs for over 35 years, ahem, tried other products that burned like cigarettes without filters, but didnt start vaping till this year...just wanted to try and preserve what time I have left without the detriments of analogs....So, dont despair, and dont be pushy, just be you. As your friends see you coughing less, smelling the coffee way before them, and having extra cash...hmmm thats a good point...they will come round. Just let it happen naturally dont try and tell them whats best for them. IMHO
