Contact your country's diplomatic corps and ask Thailand's government to clarify its laws regarding the matter. Explain your travel plans, and ask if a waiver could be issued. Keep copies of any correspondence with the Thai government.

Anytime you leave your country's borders, you are subject to the Law of the land you set foot on. Know and obey them.

I've lived in Thailand for over 20 years. I quit cigs about a year ago and switched to vaping so I keep up on the local situation. Don't bring vape gear to Thailand. They are very serious about the ban I only vape in my home never outside. Any police that spots you with vape gear will act and the results will be very serious. Now up to 10 years in prison. The reality is that they usually settle for a very large fine. I mean into the thousands of US dollars. My own thinking is that it is all about the money. The government controls the tobacco industry here along with some very powerful people. Bottom line....don't bring vape gear to Thailand.

Tax up in Thailand
speccomm | February 11, 2016
Thailand’s excise tax on tobacco products has increased from 87 percent to 90 percent, reports The Nation.

The Cabinet approved the Finance Ministry’s move on Feb. 9. The government aims to raise revenue by about thb15 billion ($425.6 million) per year from thb60 billion.

The tax hike is expected to increase retail cigarette prices by thb5-thb10 per pack.

The higher tax rate is also expected to reduce the number of smokers. According to Thai Health Promotion Foundation, there are about 12 million smokers in Thailand.

Its not a mystery.
The Thai Govt gets a cut of Tobacco profits.
If the US govt could be so blatant they would absolutely do the same.

The US does get their cut. Add up the Federal, State, and local taxes. Most of that pack you bought was mostly going in the govt's pocket, not BT. Throw in MSA payments to the States and guess who's making a ton on their cut. And still enough left over for BT's profit too.

Same as in most other countries around the globe :
The money you fork over for pack of smokes is largely taxes. Anywhere from 50% to 85% ends up in government coffers. Seeing that Thailand ranks 101st on the Transparency International list, accounting for what goes in and out of these coffers might not be entirely in line with good accounting practices :D
Vapers are a threat to that bottom line. Follow the $$$. As always.

I did not know about this. Luckily I decided not to include Thailand in my fall trip itinerary.
I will be traveling to Viet Nam and Cambodia with a 10 hour layover in Hong Kong (plan to do a quick day trip). Any know restrictions in those countries that I may have missed?

I the past few years I have traveled with my gear to India, New Zealand, England, and Mexico with no problems.

I will post this question over in the Travel forum as well.

I was referring to the massive fines or jail time for vaping.

I missed this a year ago, but somebody told me you could face jail time for bringing over
PVs into Thailand. (As I'm thinking over going there for a holiday).

What I can't understand is the logic behind an outright ban. Is it for health or political reasons ?
Is it the thai tobacco industry doing this ?

Does anyone have any supporting evidence for this?

I'm aware that you can't buy vape gear or juice in Thailand, but was under the impression that Thai customs were relaxed about tourists bringing in small quantities for personal use.

I've personally brought my vape to Thailand on each of my last 8 trips over the last 2 years.

Always vaped in public with no issue.

Maybe I've just been lucky, or maybe you have to be very unlucky to get into difficulties?

Update, a quick Google search and I found three new newspaper articles confirming the maximum sentence of 10 years in jail.

One anecdotal report of a tourist being fined $200 USD, and a huge amount of comment that people were regularly taking their vape to Thailand on holiday and experiencing no difficulties.

It appears the law was introduced in 2014. It's my guess that's rarely enforced, but nevertheless you would be exposing yourself to a potential long term prison sentence if you took your vape to Thailand.

I had better stop doing it. What a massive pain in the .....

I'll never travel to any nation where it's legal to smoke but not vape regardless of penalties or whether enforcement is strong or weak. A vaping ban would be used to extort money from vulnerable travelers, may be at the border, more likely by local units of government somewhere in the country.

It would be fascinating to travel to a place where neither tobacco or vape stuff is available. There's no risk of relapse if there's nothing to smoke, but, show me a place where it's impossible to buy tobacco.

As a tourist/world traveler, I don't "play" with international regulations due to the small but significantly statistical chance that I'll get penalized heavily and made an example of. That can take some major adjustment at times. I wouldn't retire to Thailand, but I enjoyed my visit as a kid enough that I would consider vacationing with nic lozenges, but I wouldn't be thrilled about it.

At one point I was going to school X4 in California per year for a week at a time, and also being sent out to I forget where, exactly, but out of town where I client of mine had been sent to a "super special scary" residential facility and since I was her "therapist" and she had no family at all (CPS stuff) they flew me out a bunch of times and put me in non-smoking hotels, all that time at the airport, LOL. I was dual using at the time, which helped, slightly, but it was still a giant PITA. It's a lot easier to travel with all the restrictions when you *want* to, rather than doing it for work.

And, it's just never easy. There had always been a place in my life for the nic lozenge, but now that I'm not dual using, I would far rather vape, and I can go much longer between vapes if necessary. ;)

I don't know how Costa Rica is for vaping, but I've visited twice and had WAAAYYY more fun there than in Thailand, though I was older, so there was more fun to be had, by me at any rate. I can't go back to Costa Rica though, I wasn't sober when I visited and they have some of the best (and strongest) beers in the universe....) For those of you who enjoy beer and vaping, it might be ideal? Not to mention the rainforests cloudforests, etc. Tons of amusement to be had in Costa Rica, when I went with my HS class, (my HS did a senior trip every year and fundraisers all through high school to pay for it) our class ignored the "Danger, don't go past this point" sign near the active volcano, and some of my pals were lighting cigs off lava-- we were idiots, there was a major explosion the next day--- :) Our tour bus almost plunged off a mountain, one hotel we were in was bedbuggy (LOL, we did not select a prime guide/tour service, we were kinda broke), and all kinds of misfortunes and misadventures happened. We had the *best time*.

That said, our class was one of *those* classes... Looked angelic, every member involved in something inappropriate.... We kind of ruined it for future classes as when the teachers and chaperones came back they also reviewed everything that happened with a less favorable outlook. A rule was reinstated where senior trips did not go out of the country. I felt bad about it, but only once I got a bit older.... :)

Um, I would think anything posted to a *hotel* might be looked at by customs quite heavily. Also, I'm not sure I'd trust a Thai Hotelier to not "check out" the package as it were, prior to your arrival, and try to split the bribe with the police officer upon your check in/checked mail. I've had enough bad exp .with hotels losing any stuff I send ahead of time or sending something back if I've forgotten it, even if I'm willing to pay, and it's in the US.

I just.... I'd be hard pressed to recommend it. That was only the *first* worst case scenario that jumped to mind, I can think of others..... Balcony vaping on the hotel even late at night? Maybe not so bad, but actually getting the vape into the country (and don't forget the hotel maids, even if you can put it in a safe???) because you won't be able to bring it out and about....

These are only my thoughts, you kinda have to decide your risk level, Zut.
