Why dont many Li Ion e-cigs accept protected batteries(18650 mainly)?

When buying and reading up on higher end LED flashlights, I've noticed that there are literally hundreds of top quality LED flashlights out there made by around 30 different companies, and that doesnt even count the low to mid grade companies or their lights! Also, thats only counting lights that have come out in the past 2-3 years alone! So there's a lot of them.

But, I have not heard of any of these hundreds of higher end LED flashlights that dont accept the longer, protected Li Ion batteries, for safety's sake. Now I know that most of the e-cigs that use 18650's for instance, recommend AW IMR batteries, which is a Li Ion battery chemistry, which is needed for high drain devices, but its supposedly also bit safer. But that extra safety only covers over-discharge and over-charge. Its doesnt mean anything is your battery or unit short circuits.

Thats why protected batteries with a PCB are recommended for LED lights and should be recommended for e-cigs, but if they wont fit to begin with, then recommending them is pointless..... Protected batteries are usually only about 3-4mm's longer than unprotected ones, so it would be a big issue for manufacturers to add an extra 4mm's of room in the battery compartments of their e-cigs. I know that some of them do already, but my Lava Tube/Torpedo VV doesnt take protected batteries, which is one of the reasons I dont use it much, also because I certainly dont trust the cheap Chinese Li Ions that came with it!

Also, most of the top quality 18650's are made by Panasonic. The ones labelled Redilast, Callies Kustoms, Orbtronics, Keeppower, AW, etc. are all Panasonic batteries. But another problem is that some of the AW IMR batteries are fakes. I read where the company that makes the Lava Tube had sold some bogus AW batteries. I have 8 protected 18650's now, although 7 of them are in lights. But I do have an extra Redilast 2600mah protected 18650 as a spare.

They are recommended for e-cigs. The ones that want high-drain use safer chem (IMR) instead of Li-Ion.

It has to do with required amp draw. Boosters in particular want high drain batteries. Use good ones... like the AW IMR from a trusted supplier. If you can use protected Li-ion, go ahead, if they fit. Otherwise, use safe chem. Try to avoid the knock-offs. All ya can do.

That's the short answer.
