Tahlequah, Ok
I own a KR808D1 and am trying to move my boyfriend to vaping. Every time he has tried my pv he coughs. I thought he might have a pg allergy so I ordered straight vg juice last week. This didn't help. I don't think it's the nic level because he's a pack and half a day red smoker. I vape 12 to 18 mg juices. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Comparing nicotine in vaping to cigarettes is....no comparison. Try some zero nic juice to test. Additionally, if his lungs are as damaged as much as mine were (get the hacks out of a hot shower?) it may take some time. May have to greatly reduce the smoking for a while and give his lungs a little recovery time. I'm sure there are other possibilities but these were my issues.

Yeah make sure he is drawing into his mouth, then inhaling the vapor along with some fresh air. And try having him not drag as hard. Those KR8 cartos put out too much vapor for me to drag hard like a cigarette. Especially with the hotter cartos which I also think have a looser drag. I prefer the feel and drag of the V4L Coolcarts. You don't have to drag hard on KR8's.

How hard did he drag on analogs and how hard is he dragging on the KR8? A KR8 is about a step up hitwise compared to the PV I am using most of the time (I'm using an M401), but it shouldn't be too much for him unless he is dragging hard on it.

Even straight PG only bothered me the first day until I got used to it and balanced my drag to get some TH but not too much.

What juice are you using? What flavor? Maybe try a milder flavor?

Drawing the vapor into the mouth, and then inhaling should fix that. It kind of gives the vapor a second to cool down before going into your lungs. Vapor seems to be dryer than analog smoke also, so even with a heavy smoker, there can be an adjustment period for your lungs when switching to vapor. I'd also suggest taking shorter draws until the lungs can adjust to it.

Hmmm,,, thought it was just me.. I can take a huge drag off an analog nooooo problem... I take one hit of vapor and cough my @&% off.. Sometimes... I have to start off with small hits and work my way up... Even just laying it down 15 minutes. As long as I chain vape everything is ok.... I don't know why this is. I seem to feel in great health and I have no problem breathing but I have to start out with very small hits because I know what will happen if I don't... Freakin weird.

Upon some serious study of my technique, here's how I've been unconsciously doing it for 8 months...

Draw into the mouth...
Open lips and give the vapor a "half-push" out, almost like I was going to French inhale...
Then inhale through the mouth, not nose.

I think maybe the expansion of the vapor right before inhaling it really cools it a lot... plus, I'm getting a lot of air mixed in. Oh, and it looks really cool, too.

Seems like when I "stealth vape", I hold it in my mouth for a moment, then slowly inhale through mouth and nose at the same time (more through the nose) so that the vape mixes with air a lot.

Hi Sandibri. I had this same experience when I first tried vaping two years ago, with an NJOY NPro and then a KR808D1. Both had automatic batteries (the type most prevalently available then), and required me to inhale directly into my lungs. I would go into violent coughing fits every time, because, as other posters have stated, I wasn't able to draw the vapor into my mouth first, then inhale. So, that is the first thing I would check.

The second check would involve the e-liquid. I found that, for some unknown reason, I just really had an aversion to the e-liquid that was supposed to simulate "Marlboros." When I went back to analogs, and then switched my analog brand to the real Marlboros, I had the same reaction, and would go into coughing fits. Marlboros (analog or digital) just do not agree with me.

When I returned to vaping last month I went with an eGO with manual batteries, and also moved to coffee flavored eliquids. I haven't had any problems since.

Good luck and I hope you resolve the issue.

Have you tried the trick of having him draw into his mouth and then inhale? It takes lots of us a while to get used to hitting it, and figure out the best way.

How is this a trick? everyone smoker I know has smoked like this so it should be natural to vape that way too

I agree about manual batteries. I prefer them because you don't have to drag extra to get them started making vapor and I think it's easier to control your hit. Press the button then 1/2-1 second later start dragging and when almost done dragging lift up the button and finish dragging out the already-made vapor.

Also how many times have you reused the same carto? Eventually the atty in it gets nasty or the filling gets burnt and either could be rough to inhale.

I don't think it has anything to do with the way he's drawing it in or how much nicotine or pg or vg,,,, it's just the way some people are. Now it could have something to do with the condition of our lungs. But it just makes no sense why I cough the way I do when I start out taking too big of a draw. It is what it is I guess..Kinda like when some people do after a bigggg hit of ..........COUGH specialherbs COUGH

IMO as a nurse and a vaper for over 2 1/2 years, I believe the PG is a humectant, this means it is a substance used in many foods and beauty items to moisten them. With this in mind, view the vapor as a moistening agent to the lungs. Our lungs and bronchials are covered with tiny hair-like structures called cilia. When smoking for a period of time, these little hairs become gummed up and no longer filter the air we breathe as they should. In addition, the function of our pulmonary tissue is not as elastic, so inhaling a large volume of vapor when there is not enough room for it will cause the nerve in our trachea to reflex a cough. When I began vaping, the cough was tight and irritating, and I did notice some flavorings were more cough producing than others. After about three months the cough loosened and I was expectorating copious amounts of grey mucous. My pulmonary function tests are now normal, I have no cough and medically speaking, according to my CBC, blood gases and my chest sounds and pulmonary function, I am clinically considered a non-smoker. This is all true despite the fact that I chain vape all day at very low nic and use 12 mg nic in morning and night for increased craving times.
Hope this helps.
Keep on vaping, it will get better.
PS....IMO I do not believe it is related to an allergy, possibly a sensitivity to a flavor but not a full blown allergy to PG. PG is found is so many products it is rare that one would have a true allergy to it after all of the exposure since birth. It is possible, though, but rare IMO.

^ The nurse has the best points. I was getting ready to add that I have a strange sensitivity to certain flavors that makes no sense. She beat me to it.
I can inhale a harsh mint flavor that if I got a lungful would surely make me cough... no problem. I try black cherry, just a tiny tad, and I cough and cough because it 'feels' like I'm having an asthma attack for about 1-2seconds then it's gone. The coffee flavors do that to me as well. Sad sigh... I love black cherry and coffee. Anyway have him slow his inhalations and take less in over a longer period. I have switched to 50%PG/50%VG juices and that helps with the first vape of the day, but still certain flavors don't like me.
My kr8 kicks pretty hard and I've switched to an Inferno since that one. I use the kr8 for backup and if not careful I forget and cough a bit. The inferno is most like an eGo or vGo and here I thought it would be the hard hitter. :)
I am getting ready to help convert my boyfriend over to vaping when he returns and your post is inspiring and informative. Lots of things to consider.

Actually every smoker that has tried my PV, including me, went into coughing spells. It takes time. Doesn't anyone remember the first time they smoked? Your body tried to reject that cigarette smoke then, but you just had to have it and eventually your body adjusted. I remember "smokers" that only inhaled into their mouth because inhaling into their lungs would create that coughing fit. How about that first drink of alchohol? I am sure you didn't really enjoy it all that much did you? Switching to vaping takes time and your body may initially reject it. When I switched, that morning vape was usually very light initially until my body stopped trying to reject it.

Even today after switching to vaping a year ago... If I lay off the PV for say a day or 2, when I go back to vaping the first few drags are light and I have to work my way up.
