Hi all. New to posting here but have been looking at threads as I have gotten into vaping.

I have been vaping since about November of last year off and on trying to quit smoking and using dip. About 5 weeks ago I went Vape only and I have to say I love it and I'll never go back.

I have a good friend at work that has been vaping for years now and brought me along making suggestions and such not. He taught me to mix my own liquid and the such.

I currently use a Provari 2.5 with usually a Kanger PT2 or PT3.

My father has smoked for quite a number or years. I would love to have him move to vaping for health reasons. He had bought and used some of the "cigarette looking" ones before but was very unhappy with them. He is currently at my house for the week visiting and I was hoping to introduce him to a good ecig and get him hooked.

I had him try my ecig with some Five Pawns Bowden's Mate (50/50 24mg/ml) that I had from before I stated to mix. He took it into his mouth and as soon as he stated to inhale he started to cough like crazy... Face went red etc.

I had him try some of my mix .. Strawberry, raspberry/blueberry etc (all of these were 75/25 PG/VG 24mg/ml). Exact same thing. As soon as he tried to inhale he would just cough like crazy.

I talked to my friend and looked at some threads on here trying to figure this out. First thought was too high nicotine for him (24mg/ml) or some sensitivity to either PG or VG.

I put some pure VG in a tank... same reaction. I put some pure PG in a tank... same reaction.

I'm at a loss here as to what could be causing this. He didn't have this issue with the "cigarette look" ones he had in the past. I even tried moving the voltage on my Provari down to 3 volts and it still did it.

Any ideas? Anything you guys can think to try?

I really want him (and eventually my mom) to move to vaping to get off cigarettes... but if it just makes him cough like crazy every puff... obviously that isn't going to work.

Thanks in advance.

Brian

My GF can't Vape because of coughing, and believe me I've tried every possibly combination of VG PG Nic type of device wattage voltage etc etc etc, I do believe it's part in her case that she's not psychologically ready yet that all I can come up with in my case. I've no doubt there are those that just can't Vape.

I hope u fair better then I have in your endeavor. All you can try is combos of PG vs VG, nic levels, flavor types, lowest VW setting increasing as needed, lots of water, different types of toppers ie top coil bs bottom coil, a longer drip tip, etc. GL OP.

I'm a Golden Oldie, 71, and had no trouble vaping at all. But there was a thread on here a while ago just like yours. The guy wanted to help his mom start vaping, and no matter what he tried, she seemed to cough and couldn't do it. Maybe it is a matter of inhaling right down into the lungs. Many long time older smokers have just gotten into the smoking habits they have, and may inhale really deeply at first, which makes them cough like crazy.

I had to realize that vaping is NOT like smoking in lots of ways. When I first started, I was pretty tentative about inhaling. Just really took it in my mouth, didn't really inhale much, and then blew it right out. Not too much effect, but it didn't make me cough. Then I progressed to taking the vapor into my mouth, holding it there a second, and then sort of "swallowing" the vapor and then exhaling. It's hard to explain this process in words. If your dad was sitting here, I could show him, lol.

And, like somebody else said, it may be psychological. He might feel "pressured" no matter how good your intentions are, and passively resisting by coughing. I hope you can find something that works for him.

Just to let anyone know that might be interested...

I took my dad to a local vape shop. I told them of the problem and they were as baffled as I was. They gave him a spinner battery and turned it down to 3.3 volts and had him try one of the liquids from their "juice bar" ... no cough. We tried about 15 or so different liquids and he only coughed on one of them and no where near the level before.

I asked them if we could try it out on a Zmax v5 as that is what I was thinking might work ok for him. They grabbed one and threw a battery in it and set it to 3.0 volts. Same result... no issues at all.

All we can come up with is that the ProVari 2.5 just runs the tanks/coils much better... or produces much more vapor or at a higher temp that seems to not work for him.

At any rate I'm happy that I was able to find something that works well for him and that hopefully he can transition to vaping instead of cigarettes. Tomorrow I plan to have him try some of my liquids I've mixed up to see if he has issues with those still or if they are ok on the Zmax also.

Hey Brian, so glad you have found something that might work for your dad. I think that's kind of funny, actually. The Provari is just "too good" and powerful. I'm kidding, of course. There are so many devoted fans of Provari and I don't intend to rile them up. Your experience, however, says to me, that vaping is a very individual thing, and that no matter how great something may be, it might not be the right thing for every person.

Again, I wish you and your dad success in his vaping experience. I think it is is wonderful that you want to help him get healthier and are willing to go to so much trouble to do it. Your dad has a good son.:)

Hi Porkchopz, welcome to the ECF and congrats on making the switch! Way to go on sticking it out and finding what works for your dad!
About the coughing thing, I have found that when I vape if there is even the smallest amount of liquid at the battery connection it will make me cough. My husband can vape like a steam machine even if his tank is taking a bath at the connection (really gross)! Not saying this is the problem your dad is having, just wanted to share my experience in case.

What I do often is take a small piece of paper towel give it a little spin, swab out the drip tip then fold another small piece to dry out the connection and right back to happy vaping!

Was at a bar awhile back, asked the bartender if I could vape, he said sure then asked to try it when I told him it was chocolate covered cherry, well he took a big hit and started hacking up a lung! I was stunned and so was he (to say the least). Of course the light bulb went off for me, I said sorry, wait let me try something, was able to convince him to try it again after removing the extra moisture and what a difference!! I think 3 more of the staff came over to give it a try because he told them all it was amazing!!

I ve given my mods to several friends&family smokers to try..9/10 will cough badly in the beginning..In my experience, it's the inhalation method they're used to as smokers. Therefore, nowadays I tell them to first take 3-4 drags in their mouth and release the vapour..Then a couple more with keeping the vapour a while longer in their mouth..Then again a couple drags with inhaling just a small portion of it..etc..This gradual process makes it much smoother/pleasant for the first-time user..

If you're thinking 'well, I was fine when I first used an ecig'..Don't forget that most probably your first experience (like mine) was not anything close to a dual-coil tank sitting on a 6V battery..

i just started vaping and personally i start with about 3.4 volts on my lavatube vape a little bit then move to 4.5 and vape and move up if desired if i start too high a volt setting then i will cough and feel sick. so i would say try to start him on a low volt for a while and slowly move up if he wants.

From experience, I recommend starting him off with a very low vapor production and medium nicotine levels. I have non-vapers that try my e-cigs from time to time, and I can say this through experience. I turn my VV/VW down quite a bit, and vaping a 6 mg juice, and they have no problems tasting it. Even with those low levels, they'll want to cough, but it is a much more tollerable level. my other device is a dual coil mech mod, which although looks similar, I use it to vape an 18mg limit. When they want to try that one, I'll tell them straight up... "you're going to cough".. and they always do. I turn my Vamo down to 8 watts with the 6mg mix, and they have no problem.

So, my recommendation is make a batch of 6-8mg juice, use the highest ohm coil you have, and lower the voltage.... reduce the vapor, nicotine to something they can tollerate at first. They're not used to vapor, (which is quite heavier than the smoke he's used to) and see how it goes for him. A dripper will come in handy with the coil building. Also, try a higher mix of VG, since VG has a lower throat hit (which is what's causing him to cough). you might need to up the flavor content a bit to compensate though.
