Why is the FDA doing this?

What is the real reason for the FDA smear campaign?

  • The almighty dollar (taxes, political pressure etc)

  • A genuine concern for public safety

  • other (post reason)

they are safer for a small minority of nicotine addicts thats about all..

democracy dude democracy.. we are the minory..

if the FDA can make the majority think they are doing their job of looking after em.. the minory dont matter..

anyways its not really a smear campaign.. just a little report saying they might not be %100 safe..

This is the FDA under the leadership of Barak Obama. (Don't get me wrong, I voted for him.) But, like any government agency, they go by the letter, without regard for common sense. Obama wants an end to false claims by food suppliers, drug companies, etc. Google "FDA classifies Cheerios as a drug" and you'll see what I mean.

The Cheerios nonsense is basically a warning call to companies smaller than General Mills to cease and desist with claims that their foods, products, or whatever will lower your cholesterol, make your hair thicker, your "you know what" longer, etc. Unfortunately, e-cigarettes are getting caught in the cross fire, particularly with regard to claims by some suppliers that e-cigarettes are a smoking cessation device. Anecdotal evidence suggests that it is, but stating as much without scientific proof is a major no-no when it comes to drugs such as nicotine (which has also been classified as a poison).

I for one picked "the almighty dollar" in the poll above, because I believe that is a large factor, given the fact that if all analog smokers were to turn to e-cigarettes overnight, the country would lose billions of dollars in tax revenue. But if the second option had instead been labeled "a misguided concern for the public safety," I might have gone with that one.

I have to respectfully disagree. The FDA's press release was an obvious smear campaign. And it worked, unfortunately, in that the media took the story and started running e-cig exposés. The FDA stated that one sample had traces of an ingredient found in antifreeze. Then the news media started running headlines that e-cigs have antifreeze in them. I, personally, think it's the FDA's backup plan just in case they lose in court. If they can't ban them outright, then cut them off at the knees by creating a public panic.

I just can't decide if it is being bankrolled by pharma (OTC NRTs), Big tobacco, or both.

we are talking definitions here.. me taking what the report said as simple fact.. an in truth it was pretty mild..

the scallywag media and scary forum threads doing the rest.. take it as a simple test they ran.. they found very little.. they report what they find.. they are now seen to be doing their job and on the ball...

if it was a smear campaign it was a pretty mild one.. run any test on most of the things we consume on a daily basis and some alarming results would be found..

ether way i think we are making more of it than we should be doing..

The report said that 1% DEG was found in one of the samples, though it was clearly <1% in the study itself which could be anything. Hell it might have been 0.000001% for all we know. Not to mention they purposefully made no mention of how many samples were even tested. It also claimed DEG as a carcinogen. Which it is not.

The fact is, the FDA and the media reports both distorted the facts in an attempt to convey to the public that electronic cigarettes are just as bad as combusted tobacco. In some reports I've even seen them state "Electronic Cigarettes, just as bad if not worse than the real thing."

Consider this scenario that I have posed elsewhere -

Step 1 - FDA study spun to show that current unapproved E-juice is harmful and not safe -

Step 2 - Public awareness is raised to the E-cig concept - bad news travels faster than good news in today's "If it bleeds it leads" media

Step 3 - All current unapproved E-juice is pulled from the market -

Step 4 - 1 or 2 years down the road BIG TOBACCO unveils their version of the E-Cig containing -
NEW AND IMPROVED - FDA APPROVED E-JUICE

They can use the same "study" with emphasis on different conclusions - e.g. Safer than Tobacco and proven as a cessation aid - Therefore not stamping out the E-cig - But - Legitimizing it and cornering the market - This is EXACTLY how one would play the media and control public perception on things like this -

Crazy?? I think not -

I think Bones has it figured out.

Utilizing the might of the government to eliminate the offshore suppliers thus making a way for US concerns (Big Tobacco) to capitalize on the new technology.

It's not ethical but it makes perfect business sense.

Sorry. I don't think big tobacco is interested honestly. They've had their beat down. It's big pharma. And the reason is that big pharma and big oil sleep together - alot! Big oil is the power right now with big pharma right behind them. It's big pharma that wants to capitalize off the social stigma of smoking that has been so carefully cultivated over the last 15 years. FDA and big pharma are good buddies. That's my take.

I have to agree with chad on this one that the Gov't stands to make a larger profit from big pharma market this as a cessation aid that from big tobacco marketing it as a safer cigarette.

In My Opinion the way it went down was:

Big Pharma went eh-up?, them new e-ciggies gonna spoil our business. Best get them off the shelves like what we tried to do with nicowater. Call all the health orgs on our payroll and tell them to put out some cautionary warnings. Dig up everything. Better call that Frankie Lautenberg boyo too. He owes us a couple of favours. How many insiders do we still have at the FDA? Call that guy who got the chantix through. Gosh, he was good.

Up until this point the FDA had maintained e-cigs were not under their jurisdiction. Unless they were marketed as a drug or a health device, they would remain that way. Sellers who marketed them as cessation or health devices would be singled out. Ruyan and Njoy having done their homework knew this. Anyone who had one iota of sense knew this too. The guys at safe&HealthyQuittyCigs.com were now learning this the hard way.

Frankie calls the FDA. Just do it, he tells them. I want them all banned. Tell them, I told you to do it. We'll say it's a health and safety issue. I don't care if all the ingredients are already FDA approved. We'll make something up later. Tell them were doing it for the kids. That always works. ha ha. The FDA oblige and confiscate some large shipments of e-cigs.

SE and Njoy bring FDA to court. FDA cannot lose at any cost. Big money is riding on this ticket and whatever face they have. They wait until no more evidence can be admitted to the case and then go ahead and release the results of the tests where they tried their damnest to come up with some **** that would stick. This would ensure that no counter argument could be made. DEG was their ace in the hole. No talking around that.

Nevermind that it was only found in one brand. Don't mention it. Tar everyone with the same brush. Don't consider whether Ruyan or anyone else use their own liquid and have their own tests and don't mention about the rest of the stuff being found in other NRT's - just make it scary - use the words antifreeze and cancer as much as possible. Get the press on our side, should be easy. They're all muppets ha ha... what? a small number of e-cigarette users are annoyed with us? well just give them some aspartame sweetened drinks and some diacetyl flavoured popcorn, throw in a box of chantix for free. They won't be alive for long ha ha ha. Now where's our checks?

You know that would be funny as hell. If it wasn't so likely to be dead accurate ..
