If you are not getting a bit of sweet/tart on your tongue then your mind may not connect it as a cherry flavor. Flavor is mostly aroma. The tongue can only sense sweet, sour, bitter, salty and savory. It can't distinguish between (for example) apple and sweet onion without your nose. With cherry it could need a combination of the right sweetness/tartness on your tongue (hopefully the flavor at correct concentration and maybe a bit of sweetener will provide that) combined with the aroma of cherries (you need to let yourself smell some of the vapor).
