The holes are used to feed juice into the carto from the tank as you inhale, thus keeping the wicking and filler saturated and preventing the need to drip or drip more frequently. My experience has been iffy with them, but that's just me. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. I've had a few dry hits from my X8 DCT, though it only has one hole punched instead of 2-3 like some cartos do.

Why not just use the tank? I don't understand the advantage of a carto inside one.

Some prefer the carto and the flavor it provides. It's all personal preference, which is the great thing about vaping.

If you don't have the carto inside the carto tank, how are you going to vaporize the juice?

Well some like the experience of cartos with a large capacity for juice. If I may add, they are easily customizable.

I use Boge single coil two hole carts at 2.0 ohms. They are easy to fill before inserting into tank. After that you only need to refill the tank. When you draw on the drip tip, juice enters the cart thru the holes. They are pretty much hassle free and dependable. Sometimes you might get a dud that doesn't work. The Boges I have been using are great and cant remember the last one I had a problem with. IBTanked has a nice selection of tanks. But, if you like to fiddle with things and have time you may want to work with the RBAs. I have a couple but I work a lot and just find the carts easier to deal with. Good luck

A clearo is either a bottom coil where the juice is fed through the small wick in the bottom of the tank. This, if properly setup, offers a cooler feel to the vape, consistant volume and decent taste. The top coil clearo is warmer for a vape and again if working properly offers a good consistent vape, but often can't wick fast as a bottom coil (yes I know I will hear about that comment.)

I have had bottom coil clearos and top. Both have done their jobs. The best, however, has been the immersed carto tank. Again, it has to do with proper setup and use. Any method can have poor wicking causing dry hits, or flooding.

The carto works for people who liked to drip. They would drip juice onto a mesh right above the coil. The problem is that they would have to constantly drip to keep it wet. Some cartomizers used a filler material that allowed for more juice (also seen in the pre-filled that you would often buy at the store,) this allowed more juice and less filling. I personally used to take the pre-filled cartos and strip out some of the filling to make drippers.

The tank style carto systems surround the tube with juice and have a filler inside. This means that the need to drip is removed. I find that once setup and working right I get a better tasting and more consistent vape from this style, but it has taken me some time to find the right combinations of tank/ cartomizer. Is it the end all be all of vaping? Certainly not.
You can usually find an inexpensive carto-tank and a good quality carto to try it out.

Fasttech sells the X8 which I like, just don't bother with the carto that comes with it.

It is a great tank to work with. Right now my personal favorite is the AGR using a Boge slotted carto... still finicky at times, but overall the more saturated vape I have had.

I think I'm understanding. Is this all correct: It's just a big container that surrounds a cartomizer. The cartomizer and tank are both full of juice. Juice from the tank moves through punched holes in the cartomizer, which is where the vapor is produced. The advantage over a plain cartomizer is that there's much more juice capacity and assuming the tank is clear you can see when it's time to add more. I notice polypro tanks are available, so it's a way to vape tank-cracking juices while seeing the juice level.

The advantage over a big clearomizer or glassomizer is - uh - that you don't have wicks and heads to replace? But you still have to replace the cartomizer regularly. So is the only advantage over a clearomizer/glassomizer a matter of preferring the taste given by the cartomizer?

I recently received my IBTanked carto tank and Boge laser slotted cartos. Loving the vape quality over my T2, Mini ProTank & ProTank II...much more consistent and I really like the way the flavor hits. It took me making a mess out of one carto (plus my lap and vape station), but I think I have the filling process down. I'll still be using the clearos I have, but don't see myself purchasing any additional ones. I do see myself buying at least one more carto tank even though I have an RBA on order.

I would hope that some B&M shops have carto + carto tanks already set up for their customers to try in place of the typical mini-clearo.

Retired is right, it's purely preferential.

I'm fine with clearos, especially the iClear series. They do their job well, but they don't suit my vaping habits. I can sometimes vape faster than a clearo can wick juice. I also chain vape, which puts a hurtin' on clearos. When they work, they work great. But the amount of dry/funky hits with them just turned me off.

Now, once you get carto tanks down, they're really not difficult at all, and not very messy, either. Like I said in a previous post (which made me sound like a d-canoe, but it's true), if your carto tank is leaking, or flooding, or you're getting burnt or dry hits, it's, well, it's because you're doing it wrong. Sorry! (Not you, personally, OP, just people in general).

It's really not that difficult to master. There is always the trial and error period, but honestly, that phase doesn't last long if you stick with it.
