Does that have any impact on flavor?
Can you notice any differences?

I have 2 DIDs on the go with this setup at the moment. One tastes like a standard genesis with DV red cow. The other has DV chocolate in it and while the first few hits are good it doesn't respond well to getting dry and very hot such as in chain vaping long hits. If this happens it tastes sweet/burnt. Good wicking is very important. I'm going to order some 500 mesh and burn juice off it a few times rather than just rolling 350 and dropping it in, hopefully then can vape it like a train.

The enamel coated wire produces good vapour but without the initial harshness, like it's been broken in already and the juice isn't as discoloured after week. Throat hit is still good although it is different because it's less harsh. It would be interesting to see if ridiculously low ohm coils can be used without blowing my head off.

There are other factors such as the fact I've switched to nichrome instead of kanthal and only vape VG. I'll have a look for enamelled kanthal if it exists as I may be tasting nichrome when it gets hot in the second coil. Other people's opinions would be very welcome as this is still experimental and I don't have a particularly sophisticated palette (due to eating my mums cooking as a child) :) plus I've only put 2 VG flavors in it so far. That being said it's a breeze compared to faffing about oxidising wicks and I can't see myself going back. The wire on ebay.com was $5 although different wires would be worth testing.

I wonder if it would out-gas some harmful chemical?

Depends on a few variables with your setup, but generally when wet (operating condition) in between 200-300 F. (very general guesstimate)

Assuming torlon is the enamel used I should only be concerned if the coil goes over 428 F in terms of hazardous chemicals. Then it would be a question of quantities released from a 2 inch wire over a week and how this compares to day to day hazards such as car exhaust fumes, pesticides on food etc.

I just read that data sheet you listed above on torlon. It says Inhalation: In case the plastic burns and combustion gases are inhaled leave the room and get medical attention. It explains it as a type of graphite infused plastic, even if it can handle the temerature i wouldn't want to vape off any coil with a plastic coating. I mean kanthal and nichrome is really cheap so i don't see why take the risk. Saying we already poison ourselves with car exhaust and food pesticides is a good way of rationalizing ingesting anything harmful.

Alright, don't laugh at me, because this is my first attempt at rolling a wick.

So, does the rolled ss mesh wick shrink during oxidization? I've been rolling and rolling this thing and I don't think it can get any tighter. Yet it won't fir in the hole of my Griffin. There's no hole in the middle of the wick, and now my finger skin is starting to come off. I don't want to vape my finger skin. I'm not the only one in this house who would be upset if I had injured fingers...

Not sure if shrinks, but check out Crack3Done's technique. Detailed here at:http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/modding-forum/330407-500-ss-mesh-40.html#post7672047

I just did a dud/Chid... with a 70mm wick, same problem initially, it would not fit..then bam. (props to Crack3Done)

Have you noticed any stress/cracks in the enamel after coiling?

Have you done a dry burn? If so, does it glow?

Only roll one direction - towards the 'tail'. When I need to get it tighter, I put the wick on my unfinished wood table & roll it there. And roll from the center out.

HTH!

It's an uncertainty so fair enough, I wouldn't vape on a silica wick personally. Obviously burning plastic is going to be bad for you but the coating wouldn't undergo combustion on a wet wick at 300 F. I wouldn't want to take the cotton/polyester mix in cartomisers and inhale the combustion gases from that either although I would happily vape on a cartomiser, even though many contain plastic. That being said I understand anyone who doesn't want to use cartomisers because they have polyester in them since there haven't been any clinical trials on the health effects that I know of. The purpose of me experimenting isn't to save money but to find a more convenient way of wrapping a coil as I like many find it frustrating at times. That and I like to experiment for the hell of it.

I'm not rationalizing ingesting anything harmful, I don't think using enamel coating in this application is particularly harmful at all. A lot of interesting ideas seem to get shot down in situations like this because it can't be proved that it isn't completely safe. We're basically finding creative ways to inhale nicotine which is a highly toxic substance so I think perspective is needed. This paragraph isn't exactly reassuring Nicotine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia even when ingesting nicotine in solitary form. All I know from my limited experience in working in oncology clinical trials it it's a hell of a lot safer than smoking, plus messing putting together impressive setups is fun in itself.

I don't quench. Just heat it 'til it glows cherry red - let it cool - repeat 3x. check for fit in your atty. I like mine a little loose. If it's okay, wet w/ VG juice & burn off - repeat 3x. Then have fun wrapping your coils. :D

K got it. It fits, but it's a tight fit. I hope that's a good thing.

Now to oxidize. Is there a preferred method as of today? I know there are many methods out there, but they could be outdated, or trumped by better methods.

I kind of agree. And each of us have to make these kinds of decisions for ourselves. This kind of wire would absolutely be ideal if we are confident it is safe because it would make RBAs easy enough to do with your eyes closed. But, I guess I don't have that much trouble with normal wire and do want to avoid as much as possible anything that could cause problems.

428 degrees may not be enough overhead for comfort though. I do wish we could get some tests though.

Maybe there are similar wires that use a higher temp coating?

Ok, what if I don't have straight VG juice?

You ought to be good to go. Now it's time to get yer wrap on. :D

Cool, just I went ahead and used some 50/50

What about, can you over-oxidize? I want to be sure it's good enough, not too much or too little.

I did 4 burns no juice, then 3 burns with juice.
