Chris,

Are you using #2 OR #2/0. There is a difference. It's a little confusing but the wick sizes get bigger like this:

#10 is the smallest and #1 is the biggest. Then it reverses so #1/0 is bigger then #1 and #2/0 is bigger then #1/0.

So from smallest to largest it looks like this ....#5,#4,#3,#2,#1,#1/0,#2/0,#3/0.......and it keeps getting larger.

The #1/0 is what I'm using for Odysseus and Penelope. It's a little smaller then the 3mm silica when it's dry and slightly larger when it's wet. It fills the channels perfectly. It's about the size wet of what a 3.5mm silica would be, which is the new size Imeo is testing. I use a double wick up top while I used to use a triple with silica. The cotton wicks a lot better.

I tried the candle wick in my E-2 and it was pretty good. It's pretty easy to use. I thought the gauze was just a little better, Maybe because it's not as dense and may absorb more joose.

If we were to have a poll on wicks, my choices would be.

1- The ss wrapped with a cotton diaper, Genisis style
E-2 for the rest.
2- gauze with a tiny bunny ball on top.
3- gauze wrapped with ss and a tiny bunny ball on top.
4- gauze
5-candle wick
6-Bunny ball.
7-Bamboo

There all good, just some better than others.:)

Got a 'Phoenix' TBC-2 rebuildable today. Tomorrow will try out the candle wick on it.
The SGMV3s are being built so hopefully have mine soon. The SmokTech tanks should be shipping from China, hopefully, next week (SmokTech must be shipping out to vendors before private [co-op] purchasers :grr:)

Thanks. I must be using the #1/0 then as well because mine looks and fits exactly how you describe. I do a double on the top as well.

Thanks,

Chris

Damn!

I pulled a small portion of the ETOH/PIPE sauce out and filtered it twice through a coffe filter. I actually cooked it down a bit because PGA has been irritating my throat lately (left the rest in the cup to steep for a few more days)

Made a 5% juice and loaded my Zen with it, friggin amazing

after about 1ml my top coils were COVERED in CRAP. LMAO! Like BAD, burnt, nasty thick goop. Reminds of the many pics you've posted of your gunk BJ!

wonder if 400 mesh would give a better filtrate than the coffee filters!?

Did your coil resistance also happen to drop a good bit? The drop in resistance happens on any coil I put my extraction in, so I was just curious (very well likely something goofy with my extraction). I don't get much build up, and only used coffee filters. Don't even remember if my solvent was PG or VG or both or what at this point, but no ETOH.

LOL, Everything good in life has a price, I figure if I can enjoy a Opus X flavor and satisfaction, a little gunk is worth it. 5ml is about all I can vape before the wick and coil has to be cleaned. C'est la vie

Hey folks. Thank you to all of you guys for putting in so much effort in testing and tinkering then posting your results. I just found this thread and I am very interested in what you have all been working on. I am just getting in to RA through my new pheonix and want to use cotton. I have been trying to catch up but damn, 237 pages!

I found a few posts talking about consolidating the findings thus far but could not find if it went anywhere after that. I dont want to ask all the questions that have been already asked 100 times. Was there ever a "guide" or someplace where the high points are covered so I can catch up?

I think I have my answer, I just found this lol
I guess I just have to get back my waders back on.

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/modding-forum/322633-wick-materials-summary.html

You won't need any waders over there, not even galoshes. lol

You can try Cotton, gauze, wick, yarn, cotton balls in your phoenix, Make the wick about as thick as a qtip stick or larger (you can always zero in after).Wrap it 4-5 times with 32/34 gauge nichrome/kanthal wire. 10 drops of joose. Start at low voltage and work your way up. Try that and get back to us.;)

Thank you roadrash. Actually I was referring to this thread for the waders, the other one I can keep up with lol. I am not as concerned with the mechanics of making the coil/wick but more about what has turned out to be the most successful and "safe" source of cotton for wicking. Candle wick certainly seems to be a viable candidate.

From what I have been able to find thus far, the consensus is that pretty much anything cotton wil work. The more pure with the least... additives source you can find the better. I have also seen a lot of talk about boiling. Has that been determined to be a good prep for a cotton source you are not too sure about? I have in front of me a selection of sterile gauze but I could not say with any certainty that any of it is free from, well... anything lol. Will a good boiling session make the sterile gauze safe? I know "safe is a relative term but I think you know what I mean.

Here is another question... I have not seen any mention of anyone experimenting with raw cotton, as in fresh off the plant raw. I have fields of the stuff all around my house now.

You don't have to boil sterilized 100% cotton gauze pads. Actually you may even put contamination's back in it depending on your water supply/pipes.
I seem to remember BJ using cotton right off the plant. Again you would want to be sure of the pesticides used on the plants.

Cotton gauze, 10 pads for a buck.:>)

Bummer, tried candle wick all afternoon in my Ody, I vape at 1.5 - 1.7, at 4 V.... #2/0 (doubled), #1/0, #1/0 (another piece on top of the coil), #1 and #2 and #3 (as big as the Ody will take)...all a bust :(

admittedly, I do chain vape, and a 1.5 is a pretty hot coil but I can only get 2 or 3 good pulls out of it then the pop and sizzle is gone, then that faint taste of burning cotton...the candle wick, abet super easy to reel off and build, just can't recover anywhere near as fast as cheese cloth/gause or batton...to bad, glad it's working for you guys but I'm just not a 3 ohm coil kinda guy...

I've been loving the candle wick on my new Phoenix . I made a 1.6 ohm coil and although it was my first attempt at making a coil I'm just blown away by how great it is. After the first few mls the taste is great, a little cottony before that. I only planned on leaving it on there for a day and then trying again with the rolled cotton, but it is working so great that I haven't been able to.

Myself I'm more worried about what was done to "sterilize" cotton gauze then I am about the cotton yarn I use.

It's sterile for the purpose of wound care; there's not going to be anything harmful on it.
The cotton batton that I've been using is 'sterile' and 'USP'.

I am doing 2.2 /2.4 ohm in my vivi novas hard to get much more with 32g in the space. I agree with you on the batten, it is the only one that can keep up with my 6 second double draw vape and that is only with a double wick, one in the coil and one over. I could never get cotton to work on my genesis. On the second or third double draw the wick would burn. I guess it comes from so many years of no filter cigarettes and inhaling cigars, but I need a lot of vaper to enjoy this. The vivi nova dual wicked does it and is up close to the line with SS.
