Quig did you get your hemp and try it yet?

I'm obviously not meant to use this hemp thing...according to USPS Tracking, it got all the way to Bakersfield California on the 28th of Apr. then it vanished into the ether...for the $4 or whatever I paid I can't be bothered to chase it down but I was looking forward to seeing if I was going to last longer than the bamboo already does...I'm also kicking around trying some 000 or 0000 SS steel wool even though it'll probably be a shorting nightmare in an ERA

You are not alone. My hemp has gone from Bakersfield Sort Facility to Coalinga Sort Facility and then back to Bakersfield, and after 2 weeks.......................now lost! Is USPS really that bad. I thought Royal Mail was bad until this.

Paid a lot of money for Tracking overseas too.

Hey Quigs, want me to send you some lovepedal's 1mm hemp? I have about 15 feet left so I can just send you a couple feet if you want to just to test it out. You'll probably receive it like in a day or so.

Hey Chet, I'd really appreciate that :)...I'll PM you my address...

Used the SS wool a lot a couple years ago as a filler, never tried it as a wick.

It was just kind of a "things that make you go Hmmm" moment...I have some 0000 (plain steel wool) at the cabin, kinda formed a wick cotton baton style and dripped some crappy juice into it to see what would happen...it actually soaked in and held the juice pretty good, but I think getting a working coil wrapped on it with out a billion shorts may be a pipe dream. The 0000 SS steel wool isn't cheap, don't know if having it slip into a sub-space rift in some post office outside of Bakersfield would be worth it

I tried something like this a while back, but with a slightly different twist. I used a 316l SS thread, looped it about 30 times and then wrapped with mesh. Worked pretty good. I think the per wick cost of the materials were under a buck. (50ft of thread was ~$9). I assume this could be braided into yarn?

Something I started doing that has been working really well and thought I should share. Anyone that has been following the ceramic wick thread knows about the bird house. It works even better with cotton! A bird mansion!

The atty is a RSST.

Here, you can see the coil inside the cotton.

Looking into the bird house....

With the cotton, you can shape it in such a way that it presses flush against the top creating a seal so that the air coming in has to go through the cotton wrapped coil. It makes changing cotton a breeze as well. Once you have a horizontal coil, take your cotton and fold it over to make an upside down U. Feed both legs into the wick hole, one on each side of the coil. You can control the warmth of vape based on the amount of cotton. Lots of cotton keeps the coil cool whereas less makes it hotter. Before you ask about the long coil legs...no, there are no hot spots. Just make sure that each leg is approx the same length and you're golden (thanks to pdib for that).

Out of curiosity, what gauge Kanthal, how many wraps, and what is the resistance of your coil?

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I'm seeing a lot of praise for XC-116 lately. Do we know if it poses the same risks as silica?
It's MSDS states that the fibers are too large in diameter to be respirable, larger than silica, asbestos etc, so not expected to be carcinogenic. However, it can cause upper respiratory irritation. I can vouch for that claim, I really wanted to like it, it tastes cleaner than anything I've tried and wicks very well, but it sheds profusely and irritated my throat almost as bad as bamboo yarn did. I was able to use it for a whole day, though, whereas the bamboo kicked my .... after one hour. I seem to be the only person who can't vape bamboo, so if you like that you might love xc-116.

Now I need to find someone who wants to swap some silica for two feet of xc-116.

So after reading a good bit of this thread it leaves me with some questions:

1. Is Silica wick really bad? Some say it can cause silicosis others say the particles are too big to cause it. Is there a final verdict?
2. If silica really is bad, are there any prebuilt cartos or replacement head type tanks that do NOT use silica? Or do you have to rebuild your own to get away from it?
3. It sounds like cotton wicks are pretty much considered 100% safe but you have to boil them. Is this correct?
4. What would happen if you got a white yarn and didn't boil it? Just bad taste or a health risk?

I am primarily asking because while I have no problem rewicking my Vivi Novas and Evods, I have friends that I am trying to convert to vaping that I know would not even consider it. I know smoking is bad but I don't want to be the one causing them to get silicosis either.
