And seeing as we've all been breathing cotton particulate into our lungs since oh?, birth...and we're still alive I'd say it's a pretty viable alternative to mesh...I was also thinking about how the micro explosions (popping) blows little chunks off ceramic and silica but does cotton react the same way? due to the fact that it's a resilient organic fiber as opposed to what could essentially be defined as a crystal (silica and ceramic) does cotton fragment and shard?...if you follow what I mean?...things that make me go hmmm...

So where can I get the wick material? Also is it better wraped in SS wick or just on its own.Any help would be great.

I just used some square gauze pads I found in the medicine cabinet. The SS mesh was used just to give it some form to get it down into the "Line" hole, no SS mesh under the coil.

Long time ago I did some research on the cotton diapers in the DC and TC. Even sent the diapers to a forensic lab where they certified they where 100% cotton and would not produce harmful fumes or particles.

Yes, Paulette. I have an ego-t type A atomizer that has the mesh around it. My son bought the ego-c att'y. He did not like it and gave it to me. I noted that the ego-c heads did not have the mesh holding the wick, so I just used the yarn. I did not use it that much as the little poly piece at the bottom pulled apart from the top and pulled the wire loose. This was the original one that when he went to clean the wick it stuck to the coil, etc. I haven't needed to replace another one as of yet. Just trying to get the "c" to work well in general. When I need to clean my "a's", I plan on using just the cotton. It may well be that the 2-3 strands of the smaller yarn will wick better. I had the rug yarn on hand, and just used one piece. It spreads out at the bottom looking like the regular wicks when fluffed out.

Thanks again toto! But, the c atties do have the wire mesh around the silica when you get them. Perhaps you son got a bad one!

So the cotton yarn isn't what I was hoping for, it doesn't wick very fast as it is. I am unsure if anyone else is doing anything to it before using it, but I literally cut it to size and rolled a coil on it. This was in the Ato-Miser, as my Genesis Mini is still out of commission at the moment.

I have been searching for 100% medical gauze at all the local pharmacies and medical supply stores and I can only find gauze that's not 100 cotton. I suppose I'll just have to order this online in order to try it out.

Common mistake is to roll a coil over cotton wick as tight as you do with silica. Try to roll the coil so that dry cotton wick can be mooved easily. When it goes wet it will increase it's size.

I couldn't find 100% cotton gauze either.. try cheesecloth.. all supermarkets should carry it.. it's 100% cotton, used for food... I've been using it, it's very similar to gauze. Wicking very well, and it's really inexpensive for like 4 square yards.

Just in case some of you are having a hard time finding cotton gauzing...the stuff I'm using doesn't actually reference "gauze" anywhere on the package, it's more like:

Amazon.com: Sterile Surgical Cotton Roll Large, Each: Health & Personal Care

simple sterile 100% cotton roll from the first aid section of my local drug store...it's the same stuff we all used as kids to simulate snow in our grade school Christmas art projects...

I'm using cotton yarn #3 in my Ody and liking it.
I use a paper clip wire between the coil & wick to ensure the coil doesn't get tight on the wick. After the coil is wrapped and the atomizer is completely assembled I remove the paper clip. I can assemble it nice and snug but the coil stays loose through the process.

Oh man, I saw a 100% "cotton roll" but I assumed it was just like a thick cotton pad.. does that have the actual gauze "strands" in it?

Has anyone tried cheesecloth compared to gauze yet? Just wondering if there is a significant difference.. I mean they are both 100% cotton and made to be absorbant. I'd like to try the gauze as well, though, btu I also have no issues with cheesecloth yet. But then again, I haven't tried a pure cheesecloth wick, just a supplement to my SS wick.

Same here on both accounts. Closest thing I found was store-brand "Sterile bandage roll" - only thing labeled 100% cotton - it probably would have been fine but I went with cheesecloth since I had it already. First attempt with cheesecloth and I had used a pin to wrap the coils. This left too little space inside the coils. Second time, I used more strands (>1doz) and used a small nail - the size you have for hanging a picture hook. That left just enough room for the wick to slide around in the coil dry and has been working much better.

ETA: OK - read the posts that were written at the same time I was typing. Thanks for already confirming the roll would have been good :)

No, it's like it's just came out of the carder machine and they rolled it up, here's a pic of what I'm using...

Just tear off a 1/4" or so and roll it into a stick between your hands, then put a good hard twist into it and done...you should have a nice firm 1/8" cotton "stick". I then put it with a long blunt tip darning needle, wrap a semi tight coil then slide the needle out...bob's your mother's brother...

Theres something you don't see or hear about anymore. I worked on those for years as a young-un.
