I was just playing around with some heavier nichrome and cotton. I used about 6" of wire (about 1.2ohms) rapped around a 8/32 screw, then rapped a very thin piece of cotton around this (wile still on the screw). Then rapped the remaining inch of wire around the outside of the cotton. When the screw was removed there is a hole in the center.
I saturated it in PG and applied 3.7V. Good vapor production, but the cotton dried out quickly and burnt up.

I haven't yet built a Genesis, but when I do I'm considering using a element like this where the air intake will blow into the hole. I guess I should take some pics and start a new thread on this, but I'm still a ways off from making a housing. To prevent burning of the cotton wick I'm thinking a candle wick attached to the outside of this unit may keep things wet.

For the SS quenching. I used a long carto condom. Put any connector 510/808 without the grommet or center post in the end of the condom. It should fit fairly snug. Fill up the condom with juice, Henykind. stand up the ss roll in the hole in the connector. Put a couple drops of juice on the SS and light it like a candle. When it burns up half the juice in the condom, Take it out turn it around and stick it back in the condom, burn the other half. Till the juice runs out. You should be good to go.

If you need I will try and upload pics tomorrow

Rolled a fresh wick and tried this. It didn't work ;(

Cyrus - Do you know if your SS mesh has the same specification that others are using?

I've not been able to come up with a way to dry burn cotton wick. I did have partial success with a 'wet burn' on my Echos. With the silicone cap removed, I dropped a couple of drops of PGA on the wick and applied power. I did that a few times and it cleaned things up 'some.'

Just wondering why you want to "dry burn" cotton?

My cotton wicks get gunked up, same as with other types of wicks. I've had some last as little as ~24 hours. Others, about 3 days. I'd just as soon go though the winding/replacing rountine less frequently. I know others have had their cotton wicks last longer. I'm uncertain what the differences in techniques and actual materials may be.

I'm in the process of obtaining a small amount of SS mesh. I'm going to attempt to wrap a cotton wick with SS mesh for the width of the center tube of the Echo Crystal Visions, or about 1/8" and then wrap a coil over the mesh and hopefully find out how such a hybred performs.

Ah, may just be the juice you like to vape...I vape mostly clear light fruits, an average cotton gauze wick will last me a week + (probably longer but I like re-building).

There's guys over on the Ody threads making the mesh/wick (not sure if it's cotton) hybrids...Ody's are essentially big overpriced CE2 type attys, haven't heard any raving reviews yet but don't let that stop ya, I'd like to hear how it goes for you...:)

Cool Breeze, its 400X400 316L from the link/vendor in the UK that BJ has up on his SS thread

Also, yeah, why dry burn cotton? :) I don't think its going to happen sadly. But by all means see what you can cook up. Its so readily available and cheap though that its more an infrequent nuisance to change out than anything. Are you using 'atty killin' juice?

I tried baking soda, 2 X 4 times. Also failed. I'm effed lol. I'm gonna get a new torch. Someone recommended switching to a propane unit over butane, can't remember where, for all I know it was one of you gentlemen. Like I said I've been failing at this for a while. I wish I had never gotten it to vape, I wouldn't know what I was missing...

I'm using the meter, but placing the leads perpindicular to the wick and pressing down with gentle pressure

But I don't quite believe my multimeter, so I always confirm by setting up and coiling things. Then I test the ohms with the meter. I get a stable reading. Then I fire the atty, and it shorts :(

The coils light up only right as they come off the posts, then nothing. And if I keep pushing it, I'll either get an E1 or the thing will burst into flames lol

I've had neither, but deep down that is quite true, I bet some juice and air control rings could be made for the CE2 as well, from carto condoms.

Cyrus, are you using a meter to test the resistance or continuity of your wicks? and if you are, are you sticking the probe points into the mesh?...you don't need that much heat, I've successfully oxidized mesh with a bic lighter (takes a while, but totally doable)

+1

Ya Cyrus. I don't know whats going on with your ss. You shouldn't be having this problem. There's gotta be some little thing were missing. are you laying your probes flat on the mesh? How about a pic of the ss unrolled?

if i understood the video right, the coils should never glow. if they do, you have a short; and from your description it has to be right at the posts.

look at the video one more time. the last few minutes is when he checks for shorts

self made cheap line :)

I feel really bad for derailing this thread my friends :( thank you for all of the support

overtightening of the coils is the only culprit left to consider, but that doesn't explain the beeping meter, unless I'm just pushing too hard

I'll try and get a pic up later

again, thank you all, sorry for the rabbit trail !

btw kanthal 32 is sold out on ebay - any other sources?

I BOUGHT IT ALL! LOL

Just kidding :)

The only source I'm aware of is on ebay. I had taste issues with 32 gauge nichrome (but less so with 34), got this spool of kanthal and man I'm NEVER going back to nichrome lol
