How do the cotton string and candle wick compare?

The candle wick held up better than the string. String gunked up quick. But remember I'm no master at this. I'm going to try the rolled cotton Method tonight although it sounds like these guys like their cheese cloth a lot so I'm going to try that after the rolled cotton.

Thanks for the comment. ...good to know about gunking resistance.

After reading the entire thread (wow 171 pages) to find any negatives on cotton I decided to give cotton a go in my DID Genesis-style atty. I always have problems with the SS mesh having shorts. At home I had some 100% cotton yarn #12 and I bought some sterile 100% cotton gauze. I've set up one with the yarn end one with the gauze. My juices tast so very good now, the vapor and throathit are excellent. Both yarn and gauze perform great. Have yet to experience what is better gauze or yarn. Both work great. Thanks to you all, it's +1 cotton user for sure.

Thanks,

Chris

Well, I got my G-Tank US in the mail today, and had the dripping mode setup and vaping within 10 minutes. It's working great, no off taste and made a perfect wick first go around. This is tasting better than my Ato-Miser ever did with cotton.

I accidentally threw away the package my cheesecloth came in, so I haven't a clue what measurement this stuff is.

Quigs, I'll shoot you a PM at some point tonight, I have a couple questions you may be able to answer for me. If I can get the kids settled, that is :D

Cool. So are you rolling the cheese cloth to a certain diameter?

Thanks

Chris

Honestly, I eye ball it every time I make a wick. I haven't followed a specific gauge or width, I just make sure it's wide enough to get 4 wraps with 36ga nichrome and still get a 3.0 ohm coil on it. I'd say about 3mm wide, and about halfway between firmly rolling it to having it loose, just perfect to hold a lot of liquid without falling apart or burning from the coil.

Pretty much what I do with the rolled cotton but with gauze/cheese cloth you can count the vertical threads...now that I find out that there are different thread count gauze/cheese cloths I can't say what size to cut it too but I can say that between 60 and 65 vert. threads for the Ody is about perfect for me.

I have found out that with cotton the thread count doesn't matter. With man made materials the juice wicks up the outside of the wick. With cotton it penetrates the cotton. So I have had better results with a fluffy cotton yarn then I did with cotton cord that had more threads at the same diameter. The cotton cord doubled has 8 strands the cotton yarn has 4. The yarn wicks much better with less strands because the fluffy wick sucks up the juice and plumps up.

...anyone care to offer gause-yarn comparisons?

Also on candle wicks, I've seen some cotton oil candle wicks at ~1/16" dia. Are cotton oil candle wicks what some have used or has it more conventional cotton candle wicks?

I have some 1/8" oil candle wick, but I don't think that going to fit in my Echo Visions!

ProRo has both coiled right now just waiting on the outcome.

Has any one tried cooking twine yet, the stuff you use in an oven to tie up chicken, turkey, beef, ECT? It can take a bit of heat and you should not have to boil it, or do much prep work. You might have to untwist it a bit if it is wound really tight to allow better wicking. Plus the stuff is really easy to find on the net or at the super market. :) The twine is cheap and comes in the average roll of 200 ft (60m) or so, should last a while if your only using 3 inches (25.4mm) or so at a time.

I think if you can cook with it safely like every one has been doing since forever...., you should be able to vape on it if it wicks well enough. I am still waiting on my pen so i have not tested it yet, can some one give it a go? If it works should be less work than yarn, cotton balls, or cheese cloth.
