Just wanted to point out that with the CE2s with the stock silica wicks, my clear juice would start to get colored after a few days (vape to ~1/3 full on XL clearo then refill). After using the cotton wicks in the CE2, at no point did my clear juice get any color. My guess on this is that when the silica wick wasn't fast enough, some juice would get burnt and this would drain back into the reservoir. Apparently with the cotton wick, no burnt juice at all - or very very little.

I would hesitate to use that 'cotton'. You can pick up 100% cotton balls anywhere for a buck or two that should be the same as the cotton 'batton' or 'rolled cotton'.

CVS pharmacies have a small box of the 'rolled cotton' for around $3.50.

Hey tom,

Do you boil the rolled cotton as well?

Thanks

A bit off the topic but related nevertheless. I butchered a joyetech ego-c changeable atty and made a "plug-in" coil setup from it. From the outside it appears almost identical. I can however change the wick and coil easily and off course adjust the ohms to my liking. I'm still using a 4mm long silica rope inside the coil winding but instead of using silica for the wick I'm using a rolled stainless mesh like the "line". I use a small wad of rolled cotton directly placed on the coil and the stainless roll pushes against the cotton inside the chamber. The s/steel extends into the tank. It wicks perfectly and since it is top fed, never runs dry unless empty. By far my favorite setup. The nice advantage is how little cotton, silica rope and nichrome is used. One small cotton ball and a meter of silica will last a healthy life span.

I will try to post pics in the AM. It also breathes a lot easier than the original.....

Well on my third fill I got a nasty hit on my ce2 with cotton yarn. Took it out and I had a charred spot. Believe me when I tell you if you are wondering if its burning you will notice right away. The only thing I can think of is when I pulled the silica out and put the cotton in is that I pulled the coils too close together and maybe got a hot spot.

I've had this when there was a loose loop on the coil.

so I have converted about half of my ce3's to cotton, Going back and forth between silica and cotton I have noticed much more irritation with silica, you can sometimes even feel the strands hitting your tongue, after they hit they not big enough to feel directly like a hair in your mouth but the irritation is there when you move your tongue around, one c3e3 was particularly bad just after the first fill, constantly throwing fibers popped it open to find a disintegrated wick and loose fibers at the foyer (for lack of a better term) to the tube that leads to the drip tip.

I have only found one downside of cotton, with especially sugary juices, like Highbrows "buttered rum and then some" I only get about 3 mls before performance drops off, they just seam to plug up, they don't burn just stop producing much vapor. fortunately I am getting pretty proficient at re-wicking and with 700 yards of wick at my disposal I will not be running out any time soon.

with less sweet liquids I have yet to have one problem with a cotton wick. all going strong still.

I pulled apart all my silica ce3s and I am converting them all now,

a big up side is re-wicking and coiling costs almost nothing compared to buying new when they die, my vaping cost just went way down,

Are you using candle wick or rolls of cotton? or something else?

Thanks

I've run into a similar situation and I have a theory (or a complete load of crap, you decide :p)...I've noticed when I pull my wick/coil set up for a change the cotton under the wick is hard, it's like the sugars in my juice have been slow cooked (to be expected) and that has created a "plug" that I imagine stops the wicking to where it needs to go...I know what you're thinking, why would this be an issue endemic to just cotton...I don't think it is, I have to remind myself that I got 3-4 "good" days out of a ceramic set up on my Ody and just dealt with it, but now I get all bent when my cotton equivalent only lasts 10 days

Hi,

But raven is saying it only lasts 3ml before plugging. At least that's how I read it. I do 5-7 a day. That's a lot of wick changes.

I just got In my # 2 candle wick and will give it a shot as soon as a rebuild able arrives next week hopefully.

<<sigh>>...I've installed 3 rolled cotton wicks in my Line since last night...the first 2 where terrible vape production wise...the 3rd which I did just an hour ago is incredible...seems my consistency is getting worse  (whoever said cotton is easier than mesh )...point I'm trying to make is, if you make a wick from rolled cotton (or a cotton ball) and it sucks, don't write it off as "it doesn't work"...on the one I'm vaping now I made what I thought was a stupid loose wick as far as density goes (don't know why I try and pack as much cotton as I can into the wick hole )...seems the deal is (so far) when using rolled or balls make your wick then twist it as tight as you can...at it's tightest it should be about 2/3 the size of the wick hole you are putting it in...(I reserve the right to discount my aforementioned size/density method as complete crap at any time, but it worked this time...)

With my Stardust I had to go even lower than that, about half the size of the hole.

There you go ;)...also, one last thing on the vert. wick setup (Line type)...leave a good size tail sticking up out of the wick hole so you can fold over (double up) the cotton under the coil...that's not going to help the CE2 type guys but for a bottom (or even top) tank genny...seems to work well.

With my CE2 I was getting a 'glowing coil' with the latest wick (the stock coils on the CE2s aren't the most evenly formed ). I just pulled the wick up a bit on that side and folded over that end of the coil, no more glow. What surprised me is that after an unknown # of hits with the end of the coil glowing, no burnt cotton wick.

Well I guess it's time to change the coil/wick.
22 days @5ml/day. No cleaning at all just fill and vape.
Specs:
ViVi Nova, #4 cotton yarn, 32 ga. Kanthal, 2 ohms, 4.3 volts on a ProVari.

Yuck. the taste went a bit weak a few days ago but the thing that prompted me to change it was that it started getting gurgly. I think that the gunk build up caused the wick to not hold the liquid and it just dripped off into the head.
