I loved the plain cotton as well but my results were completely inconsistent.

Agreed...plain, raw cotton is trying at first but you do get better at it with practice...I'd get frustrated, rip it out and try one of my half dozen or so strings and yarns telling myself "I'll just vape through the bounce sheet taste"...after 2 days I'm back trying the rolled cotton...one thing is for sure, I've ploughed through one hell of a lot of Kanthal since finding this thread

Good link :)

:offtopic:

Years ago I taught myself HTML, some javascript, some PERL, etc. Haven't done much recently. But at one point I had written a javascript calculator (acid-base dilutions) and had discovered that Microsoft had set up something for IE, where if you saved the html file with another extension, you ended up with a 'standalone javascript app'. I know we got some computer geeks around here :D, anyone remember this? It would be nice to have the above javascript for Ohm's Law set as a desktop 'app'.

Ok not to sway this to far from the porch.. but you guys say 100% cotton ... is that about the same as far as working as well as the 100% bamboo?

I have no first hand experience but from reading this thread it seams bamboo is more hit and miss than cotton, many reporting odd flavor.

Somebody really should compile this thread and re post the condensed info in a new thread.

I'd be curious to know how many watts and what kind of juice you cotton vivi-ers are running?

I'm running 2.2ohms at 4.2v (1000mah eGo Twist) and at 3.4v (650mah eGo). That's about 8 and 5.25 watts. I use the Twist at home, and the small eGo at work.

It works very well at 4.2v, but still pretty well at 3.4v. I do notice that the wick is over-saturated after it's been unused for awhile, so the first hit at 4.2v is a bit weak, and 3-4 hits at 3.4v gets it going. I've had no leaking, though.

I take a very small piece of a cotton ball, and twist the ends until the piece is twisted tightly, and the diameter is about 1mm or slightly less. When I release it, it relaxes to about 1.5-2mm diameter. After wrapping the coil around it with a somewhat large paper clip leg along side the wick, I probably end up with around 1.3mm or so ID on the coil, and I cut the ends of the wick so that they terminate at the tank wall, with just a slight downward slant. The tails that protrude from the wick slots expand into around 2mm x 4mm ovals where they sit against the tank side. Somewhat similar to the short wick Stardusts.

I think the short wick does perform better for me than the longer ones that I have tried. I just make sure that I'm wetting them occasionally, and I usually don't even think about it much.

First, Let me say LOL Love the saying.

I have used the bamboo for replacement of the gauze wick on a E-2 when it gets gunked up.
Imo It wicks fairly well, better than silica but not as good as the gauze.
It is a lot easier to pull through a coil than the gauze or cotton balls/batting.
Taste is a little different in the beginning but goes away fast.
If all I had was bamboo I would be happy with it.;)

Sorry about going off topic again; but this has been bugging me. The way to do this is HTML Application (.hta) - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms536496.aspx. I popped the <HTA: APPLICATION ...> tag in the Ohm's Law javascript I grabbed from the previous link - works.

OK back to the topic.

I've been using the cotton batton wicks in my CE2 for 1.5 - 2 weeks now (I've switched out wicks a couple or three times). I'm still getting very little flavor. How's everyone elses flavor holding up to the cotton wicks :?:?

I just got some Nextel braiding in,, I had no idea it would feel like silica but only thicker ;/ looking forward to trying it... now when you say gauze your not obviously talking about the kind with the plastic pad over like the band-aide type but the like gauze pads that are sterile and tightly woven?

My taste/flavor was almost nonexistent before using the cotton wicks. Now the flavor is at least identifiable and staying the same. I did try a silica wick recently just for the hell of it and meh. still the same. The gauze wrapped with ss may have a little more flavor but you loose the warmth of the cotton.
A couple more thoughts are, I'm vaping even more than BC so I might be getting joosed out. We may be getting used to the consistent cotton flavor overtone??
Sometimes I think I want a good dry attie hit so I can go back to appreciating the cotton. LOL

Yes, or sterile cotton balls etc. as long as its a 100% cotton. Anything not sterile you should boil first.;)

Maybe we do need to start another thread about the what and where of cotton wicks???

Mine has been holding up well TC, and I've been using cheesecloth in an Ato-Miser, Vivi Nova, and Clockworks RDA all without issue. I use my wicks a little different than everyone else appears to, as I very loosely roll the cheesecloth into what looks like a rolled cigarette ( :D ), and I'll then wrap my coil somewhat tight around the cotton, and trim excess pieces off once it's secured to the atomizer. I've had very good luck with this process, and the only time I've had a muted flavor is when the air holes on the nova were plugged from stagnant liquid pooling in the center chamber. I took it apart and blew it out, good as new. You may try doing that on your CE4, if there could be any stuck in there at all.

I charred a yarn wick when I used it for the very first (and only) time, so maybe the yarn has something to do with it for you...

The RDA is by far my favorite and easiest to setup with cheesecloth.

I'm still doing well with the cotton string and SS Mesh at the Coil only in my Echo Crystal Vision Cartomizers.

They do gunk up some when using dark-cloudy juices...not unlike plain cotton string.

I'm going to try not wrapping them as tight as I have been and attempt to determine if that makes a difference. I've a couple tight ones prepared, so it may be a while before I get to making some new loose ones.

I'm not having any flavor concerns. The one thing I notice is that it doesn't take too long before they get to a point where a significant primer puff (or two) is needed before they 'light up.'
