Nice vid again Quigs, it isnt' Bob Rossian either, not once did you mention 'happy little threads'. :D

For the denser woven BB&B cloth, it would end up thicker as there is more weft in between too, so you get more threads in it.

I can see where this is all headed: In about 6 months the ultimate wick will be 400 count organic sheets from a U.K bedding shoppe.

Hmmm, we have some 400 count Egyptian cotton sheets.

"Hey honey, these sheets are starting to fray on this one side, any idea what happened?"

"Nope."

Hmmm my wife did just ask me if I wanted her to cut up some worn out sheets for rags. :)

Thx for the Zappa link btw, reminded me of me and my buddies and my first experimentation with natural fiber ;)

what grade is the cheesecloth you are using from safeway Quigs?

The only grade they had, just saw "cheese cloth" and grabbed it...but ya, I've unwittingly bought 3 different grades of cheese cloth now and no where on any of the packages does it mention it's grade ...

For what it's worth, the cheapest, loosest weave, bleached stuff I just got from Safeway is the best...I think Asdaq is right...all those biased threads in the fine may hinder the wicking, coupled with the Bourbonman Bleach Hypothesis...the expensive, non-bleached, 100% natural stuff is crap :D

I don't think the bleaching introduces any harmful elements into the cotton. I read somewhere on the webz last night that after bleaching, the cotton is rinsed to remove all bleaching compounds as they may interfere with any subsequent dyeing steps.

Even mercerizing doesn't seem to be a bad processing for use as wicking material. It's just an application of sodium hydroxide (also known as lye - as in the old time lye soap - or caustic soda) with the fiber under tension. The sodium hydroxide is then often neutralized with an acid bath - and I'm sure - additional rinsing. Mercerization increases the surface area of the fiber and " increases lustre, strength, affinity to dye, resistance to mildew".

I researched mercerized cotton before I used it. Despite the stuff they do to it, the end result is clean, inert, cotton, and boy does it vape like a superstar.

Just about all soap still uses lye.

Some additional processing of bamboo yarn- I fire it with lighter to remove thin fibers. It seems to me that initial soaking becomes better. but dont fire it out. Just slight toughch of flame.

been reading the post. great stuff I will be switching to bamboo or cotton now. as for bleached or unbleached doesn't matter other then the bleaching process would clean it lol. what i know if bleach and anyone with a kid probably has been told, bleach is safe to even be use around babies and is really the only cleaning chemical that should be used because when it dries is leaves no residue. so you could soak it in bleach and rinse it off and let it dry you would be safe to go. assuming that the bleaching processes only used bleach .. but bleaching it in my opinion would have its upsides any natural wax, oils or other stuff that the cotton or bamboo has would be gone. (the reason why your unbleached yarn balled the juice up then rather then soaking it in.) so i would say using bleached would be safer but that's my though. here is the bleaching processes for yarn hope it helps.

as for breathing in cotton. i think like this, we lay our heads on cotton pillow cases, sheets, couches, pulling our shirts over our head, cotton balls they put in our mouth. swabs. if cotton fibers where a problem we would have had them by now.

im more interested on the impurities on the wire .. do you guys treat your wires ?
The wire is heated well over 100 degrees the moment voltage passes through it, burning off any possible impurities.
whats a good yarn to use for those you who have been using it? also to the SS users are you guys not worried about SS fibers. about 50 people die a year from SS fiber from grill brushes. getting into their food and them disgusting it .
Peaches and Creme yarn at walmart is pretty popular. It's 100% cotton. As far as the SS Mesh, it is a tight weave mesh, and its rolled and oxidized to the point it basically becomes a solid tube.

I don't think the analogy applies. A grill brush wire that causes death when digested does it through puncturing something in the digestive system. Something large enough to do that would never be light enough to just float into your lungs.

( -_-) Ω~
Hey there,

Just joined ECF about a month ago and finally read through all ~2700 posts on this thread. Worked my way through cotton (batten, wick, gauze, cheesecloth, yarn), bamboo yarn, and SS mesh. Multiple configs..CBOCW, CBOCB, CWOCW, BYOCW, BYOCB, Quigstick, etc. etc. on multiple mods...Phoenix, Novas, Smoktec, CE3's...You guys have been keeping me busy...

So I wanted to say thanks for:
1) Putting me on a first name basis with my postman
2) Actively volunteering to my wife to take trips with her to Michaels, and few other craft stores
3) Giving me a reason to buy a multi-meter
3) Investing in Silver (wire that is...)
4) Relearning the Periodic Table of the Elements
5) Memorizing Ohm's law (Ok..I have an app for that)

Seriously...So I know this has been stated already, but I do not believe based upon multiple iterations that I can say that there is one superior method for overall experience here. What works great one day on one type of juice, may not work exactly the same on the next round. And it also depends upon what type of wick effect I want on my juice. ie: cotton provide a smoothing effect, SS bumps up TH on high VG/mellow juices, etc. I guess there are so many factors that affect performance and repeatability. One thing I can say is that in all cases, (after numerous fails), I can now get as good as or better than Silica results.

Thanks to Evil for starting this thread and the rest of you for sharing great stuff.

man I was all worried

i went through security with:

baggie 1: provari, 2 sticks, a twist and an echo

baggie 2: 3 30 ml bottles of juice

baggie three: i06, .357, drip shield, drip tips, two fluxos, E1, Kanger T2, Mini Vivi, ITurbo II, and a DID...

I felt ignored. They didn't even look at me.

My fiance goes through behind me...

"EXCUSE me ma'am!? Is this yours!? You can't bring these liquids on!"

She got scolded for having big bottles of facial wash, lotion, etc. LOL.

Then they pulled her over to the side and swabbed her hands for explosive residues

LMFAO HAHAHAHA
