There's been talk of this elsewhere. I liked the comparison to cars - the new knockoffs are your everyday Toyotas, Chevys, Fords, etc good to get you around to where you're going; the original SGV3s, Odys, DIDs, etc are the Porsches and Ferraris, performance and prestige. But not everybody is driving a Porsche or a Ferrari. :D

I completely agree TC but there's cheap, then there's CHEAP...the contents of the plated pot metal they use to cast these parts out of is not only a mystery to us...it may even be a mystery to them...and here we are filing and drilling holes into them without giving it a second thought...meanwhile on another thread guys are lighting their hair on fire if someone uses a bit of brass in the juice tank...just food for thought...and a bit of devils advocacy :p

Is that juice made with your tobacco extract BJ?

Nope just VG with a little guava from Bluemist, I only use my Opus X occasionally.
Here is a cotton candle wick with batten over wick after 5 tanks, even darker and thicker.

Jacob, yes.....that should work fine. I have some almost exactly like that. I'd suggest boiling it for 15 minutes or so (I boil mine then dry it in the clothes dryer.) I use two strands (I just fold it, wrap the coil, install it then trim it) and it works very well. I also got some 100% cotton embroidery thread from Michaels that works (IMHO) as well or better. Send your fiance to the sewing store. :)

EDIT: I got some Bamboo but I haven't tried it yet so I can't answer that. But I have several different types of cotton (yarn, crochet thread, embroidery thread) that are doing it for me. Next time I change my wick, I may try the Bamboo. What I've learned from getting a bunch of different 100% cotton types of materials is that you can use almost anything that's 100% cotton (organic is even better in my book) and make a good wick with it. I'd avoid dyes (get natural) but other than that, it's all good. I do boil everything first....just because.

When you make a new wick with cotton, it'll have a "taste" for just the first few vapes....just vape through it. I actually don't inhale for maybe 6-8 vapes. The taste goes away quickly then they're great wicks. Love 'em.

Thank you, will have to look into the embroidery thread as well. Found some ss mesh if I ever want to try from someone in another thread, even saw a video of someone combining mesh wrapped around cotton which looked interesting. Gonna do a little more looking to find the best type/gauge/etc kanthal wire. Man getting all this new stuff for vaping gets expensive, but a heck of a lot more fun then traditional cigs.

Thanks again

well, just got a young june ver 2.0 mod, with the resistance meter. found out each wick i make is slightly different from the others. now i can dial in with certainly on my mini nova with my cotton yarn and cotton bunny ball for a perfect vape. 1/3 pg 2/3vg, 24mg. there is no way my mouth could hold any more vapor. my wife was watching tv and had to wave her hand to see the screen. she looked over and said "are you on fire?". lol now i am bored again.

For better or worse, some silica wick discussion has broken out over in the SmokelessImage forum...of course with reference to this thread and others.

Poked around there and some of the links to: ALL ABOUT E-CIGARETTES UK - Danger please read your health could be at risk

What's the word the Brits love so much?.......ers?...I enjoy Troll posts as much as the next guy but come on...there where even some peeps saying "hmm, maybe this cotton thing may not be that bad..."...all to a chorus of shame and ridicule.

I say screw 'em...keep on keeping on brothers, I've got 10' of 2mm silica in the bottom of my gear box...I'll mail it to ya, hell, postage is on me :)

I thought I would just give a follow up on my recent switch in wicks. In case you didn't see my post before I was having trouble with #1/0 square braided cotton in my ViVi Nova. Since then I have switched to cheese cloth and I do believe the reason I was having trouble was because the square braid was just too big not allowing it to wick. I can build these heads with cheese cloth in roughly about 5-10 minutes, super easy. The results were spot on with my expectations switching from silica to cotton. I'm having trouble getting the ohmage that I want but consistently getting 1.8-2.0 with five wraps. Guess a little trial and error will have to be done. I'm curious about everyone's average wick life when using cotton. I'm getting mixed results with my heads so far, but am trying to aim for at least a week. Thanks again for suggesting a new wick!

Sorry to bring up the mystery metal again, but because I've been vaping my filed out units like a fiend, I'm actually starting to worry about this

Just saying :)

In a few weeks I'll buy some VG locally and ascribe the metal toxicity to the VG and start a war on the DIY threads...

I heard about Chinese pot metal issues way before I started vaping...now keep in mind, I'm not trying to start a flame war here (I modded my Vivi too), but this is what my oldest boy, who's a chef, told me. Off-shore pot metal containers and devices are not used in Canada as they've been deemed non-foodsafe. The reason being is that the alloy mixture can rarely be verified. Granted, pot metal is mostly zinc (used because it has a low melting point and easily cast) but there "can" be a whole bag of other alloys in there as well from dubious origins (scrap alloys are traded like hockey cards between industries there)...sure, the plating process goes a long way to seal exposure but when we mod them???

I recently destroyed one of my Vivi heads attempting to solder a ground pin to it (don't ask, lol...it's what I do)...I clamped the head in an alligator clip on my helping hands, took the mini torch to it and it melted...the tension of the alligator clip squished it and the smoke that came off that thing, hmmm?

Just saying is all :2c:

One material I've not seen discussed here is porous ceramic. In a quick scan there is some discussion elsewhere. There are various types of ceramic materials. It seems prototyping costs for something specific to ecigs may be prohibitive.

It seems as if material and development cost concerns could be overcome, porous ceramic wicks might be near ideal for ecigs...non-conductive, rigid, etc.

Are there some here who have been down the full path of porous ceramic wicks?
