I'm running unthinned VG in my Penny with 10 wraps of 30 awg, 2.5 ohms, 5-6 volts, 8 strands of lydias, and I can't go past 50-75% open juice flow without a biblical flood, just saying lol

How in the hell can you get 10 wraps in such a small area? The best I've been able to get is 5 wraps and they are pretty close. That ceramic cup is SMALL.

If I use my clear tanks on my Ody I can see that my gap between the mouthpiece and the lock ring is well over an 1/8" on 7 strands of Lydia's...If I did that with 35 threads of CC it'd be ...... out of the center post;)...but again, juice type (mine is 70/30), temperature, altitude, etc...

I'm still getting a lot of vapor and it's wicking really good but it just doesn't taste as good as it did after I first broke it in. :( I might have wrapped the coil too tight and it's burning the bamboo. That might account for the flavor loss.

As soon as I clicked submit I thought about that...Lydia's got a pretty good swell to it...I 2 pin wrap it

14 gauge needle, wrapped really tight, the coils are practically touching, .357 Cisco style :)

EDIT: the slots accomodate the needle, so I set everything up wickless first with the needle, remove needle, run a few burns with juice, then slide the bamboo through with a scrap piece of kanthal, which adorn my vape room's carpet :)

I'm running 10 strands of Lydia's with 18 gauge syringe. I get about 3-5 days sometimes 7 depending on juice color.
How many strands are you guys using?

Thanks

7 in an Ody seems to be the sweet spot for me, I vape pretty heavy on a 1.6-1.7 coil (wrapped on a pin roughly the same as an 18 needle), 6 strands tends to not so much as dry hit, but close and 8 does dry hit occasionally because of choke (but that's only an assumption)...clear TPA juicy peach at 70/30

Silly question, but I haven't found an answer yet. What is Lydia's?
Is it Aunt Lydia'a crochet thread?

yes, bamboo viscose crochet thread

I'm finding that i'm taking out strands of bamboo again and again. I start with 8, then it swells like hell. I take one out, looks good, then it swells like hell. I'm down to 6 right now on the ERA (14 gauge needle 10 wraps like the Penny) and its kicking buttocks

Also with the thick 30AWG wire tightly wrapped, I can just pull out the bamboo threads, hook a new set and slide them through in 5 seconds, so I've just been changing wicks every day or so (not on the penny, that whole ground business is a pain in my AZZ. That puppy is still going strong, its my evening vape)

very good responses about Alize Bamboo Fine 100%
My antivirus blocked this site, I wouldnt buy things from there.

Also I am new to vaping, been vaping my v2cigs this month, first month of vaping 4 packs of cigs smoked. But I came across this thread while I have some cartomizers and vivi nova+heads in my shopping cart from a website. So it is not safe to vape? Is that basically what this thread is saying? And if this is an issue WHY is there no information about it that I saw on the site so far about the silica wicks.

Im am about ready to say f it and go back to smoking cigarettes.

Does cartomizers have the same thing? Do they contain Silica?

Most all commercially available atomizers and cartomizers use a silica wick, and although there are only five years of vaping history, millions of people have been using these devices. The silica wicks seem to have more of an issue when breaking down after many uses, so it may be prudent to replace them or the devices that contain them after a month or so of use. Most of these devices will have been burned out by this time or be tossed due to bad vapor or flavor. I have cartos and clearomizers that have lasted beyond that so I am thinking about swapping them out a little more often.

Compared to inhaling cigarette smoke, the risk seems negligible to me.

Well I was able to get out the atomizer (Silica or watever it is) out of my cartomizer very carefully and change it with a piece of cotton (the one in the bags use for cleaning babies) I wrapped back the small piece of wire and insert it back, it worked well for now :) at the begining it tasted bad maybe till the cotton had absorbed the oil but now its working preety well :) , I will see how much it will last and in the mean time I go to a fabric shop and see if I can get some cotton thread.

Im going to buy a rebuildable to make my own wicks out of cotton and ss mesh, i have a theory. If I use cotton ball cotton wrappen in a fairly thin ss mesh in an upside down U on the pheonix rebuildable, it should wick absolutely awesome and have no silica fibers that can burn, just have to make sure the cotton stays moist.
