ok guys u got a serious rba newbie here. i just bought my very first vulcan did clone (its actually still in the tin) and before i try to do my own wick i thought it best to do some research. i read about the first 12 pages of the thread and then came to the last 4.
so can one of u fine fellas tell me the best thing to use instead of silica? is medical gauze still a good thing to use? what about cheese cloth? i have a volt meter, a vmax, and wire cutters, and i am not afraid to use them!!!! (ok maybe i am a lil afraid) help pleasse

Took me days to read this entire thread! I've only been vaping a few months but have done quite a lot of rebuilding right from the start. Since i'm not familiar with your carto, I couldn't give you specifics on rebuilding it. I can (thanks to Tomcatt for compiling this) refer you to a link that he posted. You can find it in his tag in any post he's made. It's covers most all the methods with various cotton materials tested in this thread. Hope that helps

You know, I was thinking last night... What if you wrapped a bit of oxidized #400 SS mesh under the coil wrap. Would this help to prevent scorching the cotton?
I've also thought about wrapping the cotton around a couple of twisted carbon fiber wires to help improve rigidity and capillary action.
Thoughts?

not to sound dumb, but i use blue foam from fish tanks, works great and i figure if it doesn't have any chems, won't kill the fish, it can't be any worse than the nicotine with its poison warnings?

I have some of that. Works well, but I wanted a weaved style cotton to play with as well. Just went ahead and ordered what I linked earlier to try. Also picked up 100ft of 28, 30 and 32 gauge Kanthal wire off of eBay. Going to have a lot of fun playing with that this week.
Now if only my Vamos and Zmax v2 samples would get here from China.

Keeping with the thread (but just barely) I've now been smoking on square-braid #1/0 for seven days at approx. 8ml fluid per day. Awesome! Still going strong.

Some do. Horizontal carto coils usually have a silica wick. Vertical carto coils usually have just a cotton diaper wrapped around the coil.
My 'guess' would be that with cartos that have filler, the silica wicks would be pretty well filtered...not that all horizontal wick cartos have filler.
Hi guys, new(ish) to ecf, just a quick thought after reading first several pages, but like an analogue why not just put a filter in the mouthpiece, say a bit of mesh on the inside top cap, thus catching the particles that may be entering your lungs, whist still having the superior wicking of silica?

People have used rolled up SS mesh in their drip tips as filters; but I find rolled cotton wicks wick a whole lot better than silica, which is my main reason for using them.
